OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE: Tiny Houses as Homeless Shelters in Eugene, OR

When the Occupy Movement established legal camps on public property in Eugene, OR, it set a precedent for another category of citizens in desperate need for such amenities: the homeless, now more and more referred to as "the Unhoused". As part of a collective push, Pastor Dan Bryant, Minister at the First Christian Church of Eugene, OR spearheaded the creation of villages of tiny houses as transitional housing to get as many as possible off the streets. His organization "Square One Villages" has achieved tremendous results since the approval by the City of Eugene of its first village in 2012: Opportunity Village. This video presents where the village is at today.

That's a lot better and comfortable than living in a tent . I like the idea of " Getting only what you need and leave the rest for others."
@FloridaGrandma
@FloridaGrandma 4 года назад
It's way safer as well. Statistics show that it is safer for a woman to live in a car than it is for her to go to a shelter, nevermind living on the street or in a tent ⛺ pitched who knows where. More and more senior citizens are finding themselves homeless simply because they can't afford the basic necessities yet they "make" too much money to get state assistance, or they don't make enough money to get help. They fall through the cracks in the very programs that were designed to help people like this. Trust me, going hungry most days and nights.....it is as bad for the sick & elderly as it is for kids.

" Getting only what you need and leave the rest for others." if all people did not have the desire of taking more than what they need, there is enough food to feed the world. there are cultural foods and widely grown foods like corn, beans, ...most staples. it seems most other resident of the village aren't as keen on growing stuff and keeping up appearances as is the old time resident .. i live in eugene and still there dozens and dozens of people on the street. i went to my dentist.. got there early before my appt and some of the mental health clients were getting antsy and one guy kept touching one of the women and he was just babbling. she couldn't keep him off of her. i had her scoot over and i sat down between them. he was babbling at me and touching me. i just looked at him and asked "REALLY!?" he muttered "okay i'll stop" clear as a bell. he started babbling again but didn't touch anyone. i think the guy was technically crazy , but used it as a repellant to use at will.

My view is that no where should need this. But I am glad that those who unfortunately have to use.have a safe place of shelter.because of rising cost of homes I can only see more unfortunate people in need of these type of places.which is wrong for a modern time .Maybe people with spare rooms in there large homes could open their doors for the less fortunate even if its just to share human company,A meal,a place to wash and importantly a place to feel safe and Human

In college I lived in a coop. Residents all shared the work including some cooking. Each dorm room (2 people to a room) took their turn cleaning the bathrooms and communal areas. About once a semester, we had a work weekend when we did bigger projects like painting or stripping and waxing floors. Looking back on it, it worked really well. The place was clean and well maintained, and I don't remember any fights over someone not doing their part. In the early 1980s, my monthly rent for a shared room was something like $98! That included 3 meals a day and of course utilities.

When you live pay check to pay check as many of us do then homelessness is only a heart beat away. It means also that having a masters or a degree is no protection against disaster. That gentleman seemed so sad but if you want to survive you have to cultivate inner strength to be able to soldier on and not feel sorry for yourself. The pastor and the community are doing great work to help these people and that is what community should be about.

What a lovely man! The concept of giving a hand up is powerful in helping the homeless to get back on their feet. Very impressive solution to an ever growing problem. And note, it cost about 100,000 and a lot of goodwill to house 30 people.. Around 3000 each. When owning a home is out of the question and renting too is not an option, this is a wonderful project for addressing the needs of the homeless. Why aren't governments worldwide doing more for the homeless? This guy didn't do anything to warrant being homeless. He was a victim of circumstance. Far too often people assume that homeless people are the architects of their own misfortune. It ain't necessarily so.

I just watched a disheartening video about how the city of Los Angeles is cracking down on tiny homes and making life difficult for the homeless. This is such an encouraging video to follow it up with. Seeing how a little compassion and creativity can go a long way.

Absolutely amazing !!!!! Mayor Lightfoot needs to start using some of those federal pandemic funds to build tiny houses for the homeless right here in Chicago .

Send her the video, Shaun! Actually this, and the video we produced on Emerald Village are examples of solutions being implemented by the same non profit, in conjunction with the city, etc.. in Eugene OR. We were impressed. Thanks for watching! -RR

What a beautiful touching inspirational video If only more towns and cities around the world adapted this idea especially in the uk as in major cities the amount of homeless people has increased significantly in the last couple of years the attitudes towards them has become increasingly that they are moved on and in some places there personal possessions are confiscated by the police It's very sad and heartbreaking 😭
