NiceFoto SN-29 Flash Concentrator Conical Snoot (amzn.to/3aCtOM0)
The Nicefoto snoot comes with a Bowens mount, but you can modify it to other brands, such as Elinchrom, with an inexpensive adapter. If you search Amazon for the one that matches your brand, it will probably be less than $20.
Am I a good photographer or am I just projecting?
A few months ago my photographer friend Anderson Brennan (www.brennanjanderson.com/) invited me over to see his new studio. He showed me what I thought was an original product, a Strobepro Optical Snoot, a modifier that allows you to project patterns on your subject and backgrounds. It works by shining light through a gobo and focusing its shadows with a Canon lens, which they sell separately. After seeing it and having my mind open to the possibilities, I got on eBay and purchased the discontinued Elinchrom Mini Spot Lite, figuring it would be top quality like all of their other modifiers.
But when I got into the studio and put it though its paces, I realized that while it could do as advertised, there was chromatic aberration along the edges and the color temperature seemed off. So I made it work by using gels and converting my images to black and white. I even used photoshop to sharpen the edges sometimes.
While the results were subpar, I should have expected that the product wouldn’t be perfect; because there must be a reason why it was discontinued. I would assume it’s because you need optics to make it work, and Elinchrom isn’t an optics company. Unlike a generic brand, I just can’t see a main stream manufacturer selling something that required you to buy something, in this case a lens, from another manufacturer.
A few months ago, I saw a product identical to Strobepro’s on eBay and on Amazon, but for less than $200 with a lens included, called a NiceFoto SN-29 Flash Concentrator Conical Snoot (amzn.to/2Loj3T8), which has a Bowens mount and uses a knockoff “nifty 50” to focus the light. After telling Boston Workshop attendee Daniel Brewer (www.danielbrewerphotography.com/) about it, he took the leap and ordered it. With this brewing in my mind, a week later I did some very relaxed online shopping, below, with my friend Donnamaria Jones (www.circalifeimages.com/index) at her studio in D.C. All it took was two drinks and the phrase “free returns” on Amazon.
Upon receiving the Nicefoto Snoot I quickly determined the modifier was going to be a hit with no color fringing whatsoever! The modifier comes with a lens, 4 gobos, gels and what I think are some useless patterns.
A few things to keep in mind:
1. The Nicefoto snoot comes with some gels that I melted right off the bat with my modeling light. You’ll be better off using a light with a cooler LED modeling lamp and I would suggest placing your gels over the front of the lens and not on top of the gobo.
2. The modifier absorbs a lot of light. So if you put 500 watt seconds in, expect your exposure to be between f4 and f6.3 at ISO100, but of course that depends on the distance.
3. Unless you are using your modeling light to position the model or focus the pattern, I would turn it off because if you don’t you’re going to have a very hot modifier on your hands when it comes time to switch to the next setup.
4. The Nicefoto snoot comes with a Bowens mount, but you can modify it to other brands, such as Elinchrom, with an inexpensive adapter. If you search Amazon for the one that matches your brand, it will probably be less than $20.
5. Strobepro offers several sets of gobo’s, although you will have to pay about $25 USD to ship them to the US from Canada. I was unable to find them on eBay or Amazon from a Chinese source, which I suspect is where they are from, because Nicefoto very specifically calls them “stainless steel modelling (sic) pieces.” Magmod sells them too, but they are the wrong length. They still fit in the Nicefoto, but the edge of the pattern may be chopped off. All of them look like they’re made in the same factory.
In conclusion, Nicefoto snoot is just plain fun to use and relatively cheap. I will probably add more gobos and cut some of my own out of cinefoil with an X-Acto knife, like the triangle above. The creative possibilities are endless!

I have the strobepro and love it. One caveat is you have to use a pretty fast lens to make it work acceptably. I have a 24-70 2.8 and pretty much need to have my B10+ cranked up to 8-10 to get enough light at any kind of distance. In close it's fine though.

I'm very surprised you have not used other units similar before. Although I do not know when they were made, the Altman 3.5Q is almost identical to the light unit you talked about except they also provide the light. The Altman units I have were made sometime in the '90s. They originally had 500 watt tungsten bulbs but I converted them to LED lights a few years ago.

Yeah these 'optical snoots' aren't new at all! I have a Bowens one - actual Bowens brand - that is almost 30 years old. They called them 'focusing spotlights' and they have a built in focusing lens, and two gobo/filter/gel holders. But my god would that old thing get hot with the modelling lamps on those old Bowens heads!!

@@JohnGress Little update regarding the Magmod Magmask and this product : They fit perfectly in large and as you had mentioned it just need to be reduce a bit in length to be perfectly centered. The other possibility is also to slide them in the filter without blocking them at the bottom, and push until it is centered. The sides pieces of metal where the gobo slides on the side are tight enough to maintain the gobo without having to cut it. Hope that makes sense... Kind regards.

@@JohnGress you are the best John, another question, the sn29 pro comes with an 85 mm manual focus lens, it is not good for close up portraits. And I am not happy when using it for portraits, can I use a regular manual canon lens? If yes what focal is best for close ups? 105 or longer?

Hi, do you think this will be fine with a Godox SL-60W COB light with a 50mm f1.8 lens? The Godox light is about 120 watts. What are your thoughts about using zoom lenses with minimum f4-f8 stops using 100 watt COB lights? Also, does the lens get hot, if so, is it hot too touch on prolonged use? Thank you.
@JohnGress
@JohnGress 4 года назад
If you're using it for video I think the light would be ok with the 50mm leans but, not for stills with flash unless you're using really high ISO or wide f-stops below f2. Without flash you'll end up probably using slow shutter speeds and people can't hold still. I think a 500-watt second flash at full power is barely enough when you're trying to shoot at around f4 at 100 ISO. When I used a traditional 300-watt modeling light it melted the plastic on the back of the lens. With regard to other lenses, I don't think using a f4-8 lens on the snoot is even a great idea for flash because they will just eat up way too much light.

I hope this isn't a silly question (I'm new to photography), but what purpose does the lens serve in front of the snoot? Can't you project the light from your strobe without needing the lens in front of it.
@JohnGress
@JohnGress 3 года назад
It’s a very fair question. It gives you precise control over how focused you would like the pattern to be in your shot at any distance you choose. Which then also let’s you choose the width you want for the projection. Technically with a large gobo and a hard light far away, you can get a defined pattern but it will be inconvenient and less practical than using an optical snoot because you won’t really have control over the size of the projection or the size of your setup IMO.
