Thanks Ryan. You really know your stuff. I learnt a lot from your fascinating video. I was (clearly mistakenly) loading up files as large as I could thinking that would be better for the quality. Then I was growling that my internet connection must be slowing down when the website I was creating was slow. Now I know why! I'll be doing a photo sort out now. Thanks for posting - excellent.

Great video tutorial Ryan. I have a question about images and Blogs. On my Blog page, I have tried using Post Grid and The Post Grid, in order to make them all look uniform (same size). What is the trick to making this happen? I am also wanting multiple types of Blogs on the same page, by assigning the Blogs to their own "Category". Is this the best way?
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 6 лет назад
Thanks! I'm not familiar with PostGrid but just looked at the plugin page for it. If you start with images of the same pixel dimensions, they should look uniform if you use them in the same way. I THINK I know what you're talking about when you're talking about multiple types of blogs on one page. Maybe you're adding different blog sections on a single page? I've done this on some sites. It depends on what theme you're using and what options you have, but I do use categories for this type of organization often because blog widgets in different page builders often allow you to add only posts from a certain category. Then you can display different blog categories on different areas of the same page. I think you're on the right track with that.

Very good video, a question, how to handle images (Size etc) when you want to post hem as full width on a wordpress site?
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 8 лет назад
+junaid hameed Good question - I use Photoshop to edit images and Save For Web. Typically when I'm saving large photos over 1000px to use full width, I lower the quality substantially to 50% or below. Sometimes I go as low as 20% if it doesn't hurt the image too much. You can usually go this low and not hurt the quality of the image, but drastically lower the size of the file. I'm sure other people will have tips for this too. Feel free to chime in...

Hi Ryan, thank you for the wonderful video. A newbie question. When you say at min 1:40 "if you were to load this down onto the web and force it down to 500px width" My question is - how do I know the width of the webpage where I need to upload the image. Because once I know the required width, I can optimize my image to make sure it fits well within that width using the techniques you shared in the video.

This is great info. Trying to understand this in a very simple way for me :) If I have multiple photos and I want to resize for a website gallery (all the same size, but best resolution for viewing on a computer, but fast website)... does it make sense for me to use something simple like Mac Preview/Select All and resize to 8x10" (average size of monitor) cropping those needed to maintain proportion... but change resolution on all to 150 pixels/inch?
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 7 лет назад
Some photo programs have batch processing for images. I use one called Fast Stone Photo Resizer that works great when I want to resize and optimize many photos at once. It's for Windows but I'm sure you can find something similar on Mac.

Hi! I'm 2 years late on this, but maybe this will be valuable for someone else: alessandrofrancesconi.it/projects/bimp/ It allows you to do batches in Gimp. There's a Windows download (what I use) and Download Source option (I didn't use that, but thinking that's for Mac). I've tested it now and it works VERY well. Some of the other options I've tried are complicated, whereas this option simply installs into your Gimp directory and adds a "batch" option under the file tab. Cheers

This is a great video. I have another question about image size. How do i make sure the picture size I take does not distort when i fit it in certain aspect ratio.
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 6 лет назад
If you don't change the aspect of the image when it is saved and you don't change it in HTML with something like height=500px or width=auto, then it should maintain the same original aspect ratio.

Ryan this is great for those of us that handle our own websites and reply on ppl like you that help in the form of vlogs. My question is this, how would I optimise images on a website that have already been loaded without having to do it image by image. The website that I am currently helping out on has roughly 3000 images?
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 8 лет назад
Good question. If your site is on WordPress, you can use a plugin like WPsmush to optimize all images. If you're not on WordPress, you can look at plugins for your platform or other server options like the Google PageSpeed Module. I believe that will optimize images but you need root access to your server to install it.

Ryan, I recently subcribed to your channel. Fantastic training. Thank you so much. Can and or should you use the reduction methods for social media too? I. Have 2 questions please feel free to contact me. 1. Does Photoshop have a setting to not allow downloads of the mages you post? I am a publisher with an artist's collection of images from a product competition,I developed and implemented. I am putting together a list of all the new people out there in this incredible genre of artists. I am putting together a launch sequence site or sites and blogs and social media marketing strategies too that I would very much appreciate it if you have any suggestions for improvement on the plans I currently have. Can we do this offline please? 2. Do you have services? Thanks, True
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 7 лет назад
Hi Trudy, Thanks for subscribing. Let me know what other videos you'd like to see! 1. This wouldn't be a Photoshop setting. You could disable right-clicks on the site that discourages people from saving images off your site. If you have images on a site though, people can always find a way to take them via a screenshot for example. 2. Check my site at WebEminence.com for the services I offer and feel free to contact me there.

@Webeminence
@Webeminence 7 лет назад
It just depends on what your needs are on your website. For full width images, I usually use 1500 - 1920px. And 1200px is a popular width for website content area. I use 500-600px images for my blog posts a lot and that's a good size for images mixed in with content. It depends on a lot of things, but that should give you a general idea.

I guess that would be a different video. I didn't cover those topics in this video. Most WordPress themes I use now have responsive images built-in so I don't need to worry about it. If you do need to make all images responsive, CSS like the following will usually work: img {max-width: 100%; height: auto;}

Ryan @ Web Eminence hi this is True again. I can't find my questions to you. I'm hoping to get together my launch myself using Thrive themes for Wordpress websites. Are you familiar? Your videos have been also enlightening and this one in particular is prudent to the artists teachers and business owners and friends I have long standing relationship's with. This video has helped greatly, but has raised other concerns for my project that I can not and will not do to these now in the field known around the world. The ultimate goal of this entire calendar competition I held in 1998 & 1999 for a Artists Blind Juried Calendar event competition for a gallery exhibition of the winners pieces and a beautiful exhibit in print via the 2000 Juried Calendars. This has raised my need to protect the images of their work and of them. Can I prevent people from downloading images? OR is a watermark the best approach when you resize your images? Does the layover of the watermark make this uploading time too slow for your website? Thank you. My private contact info is trudyeva@outlook.com Thank you kindly. I will go to your website this evening.

So, how do we determine the size that we actually need?
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 8 лет назад
+Joselito Pascual It depends on your site. If you have a fixed width, then the space the image is going will determine the size of your images. If you're using a full width design, it will depend on the size of a person's screen and will change. Most new monitors and laptops max out around 2,000px so there's no need for images to be larger than that at this point. I usually make full width images around 1500-2000px width.

Hi, What is the difference resize and compress??
@Webeminence
@Webeminence 6 лет назад
Resize = changing the dimensions of the image to make it larger or in this case smaller Compress = making the file size smaller by changing the file type or settings

which one i should focus to speed up my loading speed?? Is resize indirect resulted in compressing?

Did you watch my video. It explains this better than I can here. You should do both if you can. One doesn't really affect the other.

+Henry webster Care to try that again? I assume you mean "image". Usually it's because the source URL is wrong.

Hi Ryan, First, I wish to say that you are the most clear and lucid person I have encountered on RU-vid for Tutorials. I will subscribe! I am a total newbie and am building a website for my business in Wordpress using the "Sydney" theme, and I am concerned that the 5 Header Slider Images are going to slow my website down. I am hoping you can check this theme and my website www.keystravel.com and tell me what size and quality these images should be, for the slider, and also for the other images on my home page so that the images are still of high quality, but are as efficient as possible so that my page loads quickly and the search engines like me. I am using PhotoScape. I think my website looks great and am happy with it, but want to make it perform as best as I can. Thanks again for your clear and eloquent videos!

Hey, thanks for the kind words and glad you find my videos useful. The images at the top of your home page are full screen so they would normally be 1920px wide. Sometimes i make these full width images a bit smaller like 1600-1800px when they get really large. They will be scaled up but you probably won't notice too much quality loss. I would often do them at 40-50% jpg quality to get the size down. The more detailed images will be larger file sizes too which is the case for your images. Sometimes adding a transparent color over top will provide a better background contrast for text and usually makes the files size smaller.
