I know this was posted a year ago but I just want to say how much you’ve helped me in this hobby. I’ve kept bettas for years but when I adopted my angelfish I had no idea what I was doing and since finding your channel you have taught me so much. I was specifically looking for a review for this hygger filter and was ecstatic when I saw you’ve posted a video about it. I just want to say thank you and to keep doing what you’re doing because you have helped me - and I’m sure thousands of others - exceed at fish keeping and it wouldn’t be without you and your wife. Thank you so much. Your teaching is amazing and you make it less scary to get started. Thank you!!!

Same, this channel is a godsend for beginners. I haven't gotten bad advice yet. I started the hobby back in September. I hate to admit it but I failed my pet by not doing proper enough research before hand and my tank wasn't cycled. This channel saved my fish, who I love with all of my heart. I've been coming back ever since and now he's living his best life and I'm proud with how far I've come. People actually ask me for help now, haha.

I love these type of sponge filters. I have been using these for a few months with all my air pumps instead of airstones. So for me I like the extra filtration in my tanks so when I clean my main filters I still have plenty of beneficial bacteria. And another thing I love is it makes setting up new tanks or quarantine tanks easy. I can pull the sponges out of an established tank and put them in another tank. And because it's an extra filter I don't have to worry out crashing the established tank and quickly get the other tank up and running. These are awesome!

These are great. The doubles are especially great for instant cycling a tank. I have the mediums in fry tanks and I keep an set of extra sponges in my display tank sump with extra bags of media. Grab the sponges and a handful of media and I have a cycled filter.

I ordered 4 of them. 2 medium and 2 small. I deep cleaned my guppy/corydora tank tonight and installed the small one and BAM it’s working beautifully. My cories are really enjoying the extra floor space and my guppies are playing in the water spout. Excellent product so far so I highly recommend it! Next, I am upgrading my oranda tank.

I’ve been using the medium with power head in my bedroom twenty gallon and love it! I had a hang in the back filter for years and just wasn’t happy with the water clarity, but when I switched over, man it was amazing! Also being the n the bedroom I need quiet so having to add an air pump was a no go for me, being a hobbyist since age 9, I in my mid sixties now, I have never found a truly quiet air pump, well the power head on the medium sized truly is, and being oversized it keeps my tank crystal clear. My tank is heavily planted in live plants and even in a twenty no one notices the dual sponges attached to the back of the tank at the back. The biggest bonus is having a thriving colony of cherry shrimp in my community tank there is so much less filter maintenance than I had before, life got so much better. Glad to see you promote these awesome filters.

Sponges may seem unsightly, but I remember back as a little kid the families first tank, with a clear internal box filter where you could watch the floss change colors and took up a chunk of real estate. These sponges are a great step up.

Thank you so much! purchasing right away! I have a 10gallon and just lost my whisper, I can't open it to maintain it no matter what I try. So I needed an emergency change as I don't have any back up. Then I saw this and this is just perfect. I do have a 10g but I want it to be heavily planted and with lots of decor for my kuhli loach and shrimp to hide in. I really, really love clean up crew species and I love seeing them snuggled up under and around the driftwood and dragon stone. Thank you so so so much!

I LOVE the Hygger sponge filter. I've started switching all my tanks with HOB filters to the Hygger sponge filters. I've had fun decorating one of the tanks with plumbing pipes and kindda added some pipes to house the air tubes running to the sponge filters. Makes the filter look part of the underwater pipework decorations. Loving it. I work for a leading retail pet supply company and I wish we were carrying the Hygger. Fast forward 6+ months. I wish Hygger had a hanger which attached over the tank wall and held the filter system in place, so you can lift the unit out of the tank to pull off a sponge or get into the bio-material compartment. Sticking you arm halfway between your elbow and armpit to reach a sponge or bio-material cup is kindda insane.

Love the nano one since I have a 3-gallon, 2 5’s, and 1 10 betta nanotanks. One little suggestion though- the filters were all black, your shirt was black, the back tank was dark and, much as you said you weren’t sure about the overhead camera, it was thanks to that camera that we could see the filters the best because of the contrast against the wooden table top. So I’m glad for the overhead camera. Maybe a shirt that contrasts better with what you’re showing for the next one. 🙂

@@Mrdds1520 I just use an airline attached to the intake of the uplift tube. I use all 4 sizes some twin, some single sponge filters, so easy to clean - when you do a water change, just remove the sponge and squeeze it in the discarded tank water and then put it back...you will have cleaned the poop, etc, but leave plenty of bacteria in/on the sponge to keep the balance in the tank., hope this helps.

I never thought about it until now but if you lay your air/bubble output down and attach to the floor and put your filters upright, you could extend your air output well far away down the middle of the tank to get around rocks or something where the air is coming from inside something and still have the filters upright against the side of tank. Thanks for this review. I have an Aqueon over-the-back on a 10 gallon tank. I don't have any real issue with it, but wondering if the the small version of the third filter (the first one with bio-media chambers) would do a noticeably (over time I suppose) better job for my tank. What I really like is that I can just T-off from my air pump that is providing air to my air-stone which simplifies the overall tank setup. I like the idea of the bio-chambers and the easily removable, rinsible sponges.

Then we had a bad winter ice storm n knocked out power for over a week n I lost my prize fish... But these sponge filters r reliable, easy set-up n maintenance. Good extra filtration, n good for like a quarantine tank for sick fish

These are my absolutely favorite sponge filters for a loooong time now... I was about to switch to the standing sponge filters from aquarium coop because I wanted to have a coarser sponge which are not available from Hygger... but Cory refused to ship to Germany (not an insult - I do understand the problem) and so I'm still with the Hygger's over and over. Nice to see, that they arrived in the US ;-) Usually it's the other way around... we in Germany are looking forward to things that is already "state of the art" in America.

i personally think translucent plumbing my filters is great, as it's way easier to diagnose potential clogs. when i just started out i had issues with my filter not working due to the hoses and pipes being black, and due to my inexperience, so now i just prefer translucent pipes and hoses as i can easily see when they're starting to gunk up.

I’ve been using the double ones, with containers for filter media, for a couple of years now in all my tanks. I use tiny ceramic balls with mine. They’re great and the sponges are readily available to buy separately here in the UK.

Nice review. The bio media sponge filter looks like it would work pretty good. You could even put in chemical filtration in the compartment. How is the construction and durability? I have tried this type of sponge filters(dual sponges) in the past and they were always cheaply built and didn't last as long as the traditional sponge filter. I will definitely try out the one with the bio rings container in it. Now, in my opinion, what would really put this sponge filter over the top would be if you could insert an air stone in the lift tube somehow to make them more quite. That was always my issue with traditional sponge filters. I use them religiously in all my tanks and I put in the no-clog air stones from Aquarium Co-op. Makes them super quite. Thanks for sharing.

Had one with the bio media but didn’t have a tube going all the way up to put/hold the sponge on. Worked really well but had to put a rock on the sponge to keep it from floating away. Make sure you get the design with the tube that goes all the way up inside the sponge. Yes I realize that is worded in a silly way 😉😆. Also I feel like the canister filters take up less space and I put the bio media right in it where a lot of folks would put an air stone. Just my two cents. Anyone reading this I hope you have a great day. ❤️

great filters i use the mini on my 2.5 gal and the small double on my 2o gal long yes overkill i know but works great added some gravel from old tank to the bio media to start the cycle.

One thing I found, is you can pull apart these filters and put the extra bio-filter balls or ceramic O rings in the pipes going up and the elbow. While not as effective as say a reactor or moving bed filter, it adds just a little more surface and growth area.

I use sponge filters as a secondary filter to hang on power filters on smaller tanks and canister filters on larger tanks.

I agree with some others, I loathe suction cups for the most part. Wish it was held in with magnets!

They make a magnetic suction cup. Or put some aquarium sealant on the suction cup if you want a more permanent adhesion.
