A Swede, Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist, invented the first pressure or paraffin stove in 1892. Soon after a company was formed, and the ‘Primus’ stove appeared on the international market. The Primus gained global recognition when Amundsen and Hillary used them during their expeditions to the South Pole and the top of Mount Everest respectively.
Optimus, a company that bought the paraffin division of Primus in 1962, manufactured the stove shown here. Optimus operated out of Sweden and continued to produce the traditional paraffin stove until 1996 when petrol replaced paraffin as the dominant fuel for stoves.
