After four weeks in quarantine our new Oranda and Black Moor got to join Ranger in our 125G dirt planted goldfish tank. So far “Moby” and “Ahab” seem to be doing well.
Please do ranchu! I have bred them. In my experience they just need a cold temperature change and some "spawning material" or floating plants (ie. hornwort, anacharis, java moss) to start breeding. Maybe a temporary pond outside during spring or fall might help with that. Remove eggs from main tank and note that the clear ones are fertile. The hardest part is raising the fry. You will literally have hundreds or even thousands. Culling is important. I would start them off with baby brine shrimp. If you are using freeze dried foods, you can grind them really fine to feed. Water change daily once they start eating.
Thanks for the info. First step I guess is finding some healthy looking red and white ranchus and growing them up. I'm trying to figure out the minimum setup I'd need. Leaning toward the 125 G to hold my "forever fish" and breeders, two 40 G breeders, the 10 G q-tank and maybe something outside come spring and maybe some temporary tubs. Lots to learn. Online sources I'm looking at for ranchus are NextDayKoi, EastCoastRanchu and Dandy Orandas. Any other recommendations?
Those are good ideas for set ups. You can also find some good deals at tractor supply for your outdoor containers. They sell containers for watering livestock that are very affordable. I purchased a 110gal tube for $60. Ebay is not a terrible place to look. EastCoastRanchu is my personal favorite. The owner will give you detailed instructions on raising and grooming. They also offer fry packs. You can't go wrong with Dandy Orandas. KingKoiGoldfish seems like a good one. Occasionally at the chain fish store you'll see some decent stock. Gem coast usa is good too. The best would be if there is a local breeder in your area.
