Orange 212 Battle - Closed Back vs Open Back - Orange AD30 Edition (CLINK THE LINK TO GET THE GEAR - www.jdoqocy.com...)
Ever wonder what the difference between a closed back and open back cabinet sounded like isolated from the mix? Wonder no more! Kidding...
Couple of things to note about this demo. A lot of what takes place between two cabinets like this is in the room and how it is mic'd. There will be a difference in how much air is being thrown out by the cabinet.
SO what I did was mic up the cabinet as normal with two mics, one on each speaker cone. e609 was using on one speaker and a sm57 on the other. A Rode M3 was used 35" away from the from of the cab, basically aligned with the Orange logo on the front. Throughout the video we will toggle between the mic'd speakers and the mic'd room and each of the cabs (closed and open).
Celestion V30s are loaded in each cabinet (stock for these cabs).
If you guys like this demo I plan to do more with other heads featured, this would be the Orange AD30 Edition.
Gibson ES-335 utilized for the tasty tones.... also ignore any sloppy playing.
Be sure to check out my other demo videos, like and subscribe! Message any questions and requests!
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more videos.

Excellent quality demo my friend. Nice playing too. One suggestion would maybe to have the equivalent examples of each back to back for easier reference. My ears had already forgotten what the closed back had sounded like half way through the open back. But great stuff. Subbed.

@@lkbasgiohbasg -Not true. Perhaps you failed to read how the comparison was done in the detailed area above (or failed to notice the printing on the lower left corner of the screen indicating what mic is being used). The starting point of each of the links are all mic'd speakers. Both, closed back and open back cabs, were compared the same way. Perhaps you meant this comment to the fellow who went to the trouble to record the video and made the comparisons. But you could do the same thing as Matt did, if you wanted, to compare any particular lick against closed and open back using the mic'd speaker audio or room mic audio, as all licks were recorded twice, first with the Mic'd speaker, then with room mic. From the details section - SO what I did was mic up the cabinet as normal with two mics, one on each speaker cone. e609 was using on one speaker and a sm57 on the other. A Rode M3 was used 35" away from the from of the cab, basically aligned with the Orange logo on the front. Throughout the video we will toggle between the mic'd speakers and the mic'd room and each of the cabs (closed and open). @Phantasmagora did an even more thorough comparison with each individual lick having two timestamps ("cab mic, room mic"), so all you need to do is click on either the first timestamps under each set to compare mic'd speaker, or the second timestamps under each set to compare mic'd room. How much easier (and accurate) can it get...?

Closed for me. I like that more accurate, punchy noise. I also feel like that would be easier to manipulate to get an artificial open back sound with some effects. Nothing a slight reverb can't fix :p lol

I found that closed back gave a more directional sound but preferred the more “open” sound of the OB cab. I’m using mine with a Victoria amps sheriff 22 plexi/jcm800 dual channel head and find they work well together and the cab still rocks with my little micro terror plugged in.

I think ill be going for the open black here in mexico its half the price, and i will just find a way to fit some piece of wood behind it so i can turn it into a cb back and forth

Hi Im a sound tech for 40 years. Open vs closed speaker cabinets mostly affect the low frequencies. With open back its kinda like a ported cabinet in that the lows will roll off more rapidly in a closed cabinet and the opposite in an open back. A reason for an open back may be so someone like a drummer can hear the amp. Ive experimented a Marshall 4x12 with the back closed, then opening the top of the back board and it does sound fuller open back in my practice space anyway. And that's the thing too, these will sound different in different environments. And if you want to keep the bugs and dust out go with the closed back, LOL.

Nice comparison. I bought an Open back and made myself a block of carved polystyrene to fill the back gap for that punchier tone when I need it. Doesn’t get as aggressive as CB since it has a more robust (deeper and heavier) construction, but it gets close.
@SOADGOD
@SOADGOD 5 лет назад
well the main difference between the two is real v30 vs china v30s. CB has the real OB has the china made ones.
@YCK96
@YCK96 5 лет назад
@@SOADGOD That's complete nonsense. Celestion speakers are ALL built in China since about 15 years now. All new cabinets with Celestions have chinese ones. And on the other hand it doesn't matter where they are from. Those are the exact same speakers. Just more profit for Celestion.

Did you you try both version in real life? I've recently bought the 212 Open back and using it with a Rockeverb 50. The clean sound is incredible, but it's lacking the punch for rock sounds... Thinking of byng the closed one and selling mine.

Thank you! It's really great to find a comparison of the two cabs I'm tryin' to decide between. My only small (very small) critique, along the same lines of the other comments, is to do a back to back of each style/lick in the editing phase of the video. Otherwise the sound is awesome, and the playing is plenty good enough (better than mine) to clearly hear any subtleties between the two. PPC-212OB is the one I'm goin' to get. Thanks again!

I find that closed back often are boomy and hard to control even for metal, it's easier to get lost in the mix. Open back will have a looser feel but you can always add bass with an EQ and compressor, removing it is next to impossible.
@MichaTulik

I have exact opposite feeling :) With my open back cabinet bass feels a lot more uncontrollable especialy in badly treated rooms with a lot of reflections.

Can you get CB sounds out of an OB if you just build a piece of wood to close it? Versus a CB that can’t really acoustically mimic an OB.

Open back has more character, the closed more definition but in of a sense it’ll be more difficult to create a unique sound

some people will like closed back and some will like open back but I think something weird here, I see you're using a tube head but the sounds is more to solid state

Unpopular opinion: I feel like this comparison isn't totally fair. An open back lets you mic both the front and the back of the speaker to blend tones together for a uniquely colored sound.

What I still cannot figure out is why the 212 CB is $200.00 more than the 212 OB ? the specs are almost identical. there is a difference in the tone between the two cabs, but I cannot see justifying the extra coin for that. What am I missing here?

I bought this 2x12 open back based on all the great reviews on multiple sites. I have had it for about a month now. It sounds like there's a blanket over the cab...have used multiple amps on it of different wattage. Sounds way too dark and bassy for me. is this the cab's voicing, or is there something wrong with the cab. I've heard v30s are actually bright. are the speakers not broken in yet?
@thejay
@thejay 7 лет назад
Is the cab new or used? V30s tend to sound very sharp until they are broken in, which takes some time. Where in the room do you have the cab positioned? Generally OB cabs need to be off the wall a tad and not in a corner... the sound should fill the room quite nicely; shouldn't sound like a blanket over the cab.
@MikeAndersonvinyloldies
@MikeAndersonvinyloldies 7 лет назад
I bought it brand new. It is sitting on a four-legged wooden table about 1.5 feet off the ground.
@thejay
@thejay 7 лет назад
Did you remove it from the chair and try it? Odd, I have never heard that cab sound like it had a blanket over it. I know in recording I have turned it on its side and placed a GOBO in front of it a couple of feet with a couple of different mics on the speaker and it sounded amazing.
@MikeAndersonvinyloldies
@MikeAndersonvinyloldies 7 лет назад
Yeah, put it on the ground on my wooden floor....still sounded very bassy. Then I stacked it on top of a 4x12 and it sounded a lot better. Maybe it was just the vibrations. Thanks for the help

Nice, I prefer ob, but why does orange make the ob and cb 2x12 in different dimensions?
@thejay
@thejay 7 лет назад
I find the OB makes a huge a noise in compact cab and maybe Orange got away with making it smaller because it does sound very good as is....the CB almost takes after a 4x12 with its size and volume inside the cab.
@lhzx
@lhzx 5 лет назад
Bigger size gives CB more room for low resonance. OB doesn't require as much of room since sounds on the back will go out anyways : )

listen, I like the concept of your video and all. my only problem is, on the video screen both say closed back 212 as you are switching from one Cab to the other. In other words there is no way of knowinging which one is which if you are the viewer. Just saying!
@thejay
@thejay 8 лет назад
Hey - the closed back (CB) section ends around 2:22 and the open back (OB) starts from that point on. Within those couple minutes you have comparisons between each cab speaker mic'd and room mic'd. Hope that is more clear.
