Great video! Thanks for using a Precision Bass in this video. These amps sound so much better with a classic bass like a Precision than a clean modern bass.
I love how much each basses interaction with the amp changes things for me. I honestly couldn't choose a favorite here. They all sounded distinctly different, and the Fender combined the most qualities I liked, but the mids on the Ampeg were so sweet, and the Orange was oozing with character. Beautiful amps, and bass.
The Orange AD200B MKIII is my favorite by a wide margin. The Fender Super Bassman is my next favorite. I’m quite impressed with what I heard here. Oddly, the Ampeg SVT comes in third place for me. And I LOVE SVTs. I’ve owned two of them many years ago. I’m now saving up to buy an AD200B MKIII.
that ampeg sounds best here, its because back then, tube amps had simple parts connections, you simply have raw, more responsive character, I would love a comparison with my modified 74´Bassman 135, which has little more compressed sound than Ampeg here and more bite, great videos.
what's that even supposed to mean? How do "simple parts connections" lead to a more responsive character? Are you suggesting a PCB and/or tranistor-based signal path leads to a delay appreciable by humans?
Thanks for playing the Orange clean!!! I happened to encounter one in a music store in Iowa years ago driving home from a business trip. I was smitten by the clean, warm tone of it (through the 4x10 and 1x15 Orange cabinets). I briefly owned a '73 SVT. Bought it for $250 in semi-working condition, cleaned and serviced it and retubed the preamp and never really bonded with it. Never spent much time with Fender bass amps, but generally like the musicality of the Fender tone stack. My dream bass rig is an AD200B and a pair of Accugroove Tri115Ls. It'll never happen because I'm beyond my gigging days, but my much younger self still dreams about it!
All 3 amplifiers were fantastic!!! It is shame that nowdays not many manufactors do full valve bass amplifiers!!! Which in addition are not made in asshole, but honestly quality made!!!
IMO both the Orange & SB compare admirably vs the "Holy Grail" 70's SVT. They also have a MV for more OD at low volumes (which I like). However you can bridge both channels of the vintage SVT for more depth. What's also surprising is how the 4 tube Orange compares to the 6 tube 300 watt amps. It sounds just as "big" to my ears. Too bad it's over-priced IMO. I'd go w the Fender for the win, but don't sell the Bugera BVV 3000 short....
Man, Ampeg's clean tones are unparalleled. But this is the 5th demo of an Ampeg amp I've seen that shows they do NOT break up nicely at all. Anyone want to shed some light on this?
Well. I have an svt cl. And I use a dark glass b7k for my over drive. It bites for sure. But the break up isn’t really there without over drive in front of it. Last night I bought the orange 200b and wow! It breaks up crazy nice. Sounds great. The only thing with the 200b is that it doesn’t have as much head room as the svt cl. I play in a very heavy loud band. And the orange still does the trick. Hope that helps.
The two SVT's I've owned never broke up or got distorted unless I was driving them loud enough to get the cops called on me. They have a great full sound especially when teamed up with the 8X10. Its something you cannot reproduce with a pedal or at lower volumes. its the difference between driving a muscle car and a Prius.
Fender is always gonna be the best on the cleans but I'm surprised how good the cleans on the Orange are, and of course it also has by far the best gain. Disappointed by the SVT, considering they're the most popular of the three it didn't excel in really any category
The orange sounded great with first demo the ampeg sounded great 2nd demo and the fender sounded great on the last one. I’ve owned the orange. It’s an amazing amp. But…. My first one broke two days of owning Sweetwater fixed it a month later it broke again. Sweetwater couldn’t fix it right so gave me a replacement than 4 months later that one broke the story goes on till my 2 year warranty was done. Cost me 500 dollars to fix the last time so sold it after. Now I’m using an svt it’s okay loved the orange sound better but the svt is not breaking that’s all that matters. (Knock on wood)
Nice review. Not like many idiots do review when there are noising shity loud drums and loud crappy music and you cannot hear how sounds instrument they are reviewing!!!
Ampeg sounds more natural than Orange.... I personally like the Ampeg more Fender is good, but I prefer the Ampeg over Fender and Orange, my two cents....
@@v33punk Ampeg has a finer distortion (more of a subtle to considerable thickening of the natural sound of the bass instrument). To my ears Orange's distortion sounds more rough. You can compare it to cameras: Ampeg is more megapixel, Orange is less megapixel. But - as I said - this is my personal sentiment ;-)
@@linovinn7011 But the Pro 2 is the only tube SVT model where you can get distortion at low volumes. The CL will give you some OD, but not the type of heavy OD you can get w the Orange or SB. Vintage SVT's only give you growl at high volumes.
Holy shit thanks for this! And I was super surprised to like the Fender the best! Figured I'd like the Ampeg or Orange best.....nope! The Fender has a more versatile sound it seams! Like you can crank the preamp stage and get a grittier tone(like an Ampeg) or soften that preamp stage and get a cleaner tone so that your low end isn't rounded off by the saturation of the preamp tube! Now some like that tone, and it's great, but with less saturation you can go lower, as saturation rounds off your highs, and lows.....although it can be very pleasing to the ear!
qustion - what setting is changed on the AD200 when you go to the heavy pick demo? is the gain dimed out or something? loving that tone, and surprisingly, I think the fender sounds better than the SVT , and i never ever would have thought that possible. great demo !
I don't understand why all these demo bass amps video have the overall volume so low in the video mix. The volume needs to be up by about 200-300% as I can barely hear what you are playing. You'd think its common sense to make the bass louder so we can hear everything clearly.
The Super Bass man smokes the other 2 in versatility, and is louder than both of them too(especially the Orange) They all sound good, they all have a purpose, but the Ampeg and Fender are less expensive, and work in more situations. I've owned all 3. Still have the Fender Super Bassman. You can get an old SVT sound and the newer CL with the Fender SB. plus a overdrive/distortion channel, and classic Old Bass sound. Not close.
I love my Fender Super Bassman, but if I'm being honest. My Bassman 100t gets the most gig work. With the line out and a proper PA set up the 100watt tube head can handle everything unless you're in a band with guitarists who don't understand stage volume and how to let the PA do the work.
@@jochoui you’re not gonna believe this but I’m now playing with a cat in a blues rock power trio who started out with a half stack and now runs a Blackheart Handsome Devil 15watt 112 now after I convinced him to try a smaller amp and less pedals. I’ve actually been able to get away with using an 82 Fender Bassman Ten (70watt version) lately. They aren’t all beyond help. 🤪
@@jochoui And too bad that Orange isn't more reasonably priced. Besides Orange, what other 200 watt tube amps are there nowadays? Back in the early 70's you had the Sunn 2000S and the West Fillmore...each w 4 KT88'S.
Is it me, or does the Orange sound like the type of distortion you’d get out of most distortion pedals? I’m looking for the best tube overdriven sound, and my YBA 200 gets fairly close. Not sure if Orange is the way to go or if it sounds like a run of the mill pedal. Help!
IMHO the best distorted overdriven sound from a tube amp are from Verellen/Meatsmoke. Unfortunatly Ben Verellen closed his shop for new orders. Maybe a cranked Fender Bassman 100T might be better than the orange? I don’t know i’m not an overdrive specialist.
eq knobs at noon on a fender or on the orange means a bass and treble boost and mid range cut, because of the way Fender passive tone stack functions? So it’s not truly comparing flat EQ on all 3? The Ampeg would be the closest to flat at knobs at noon. a little bass and treble boost and mid cut on the Ampeg might bring it more towards the tones of the Orange and the Fender with knobs at noon?
Hi Irwine! Well I have 2 kits in mind. All tube would be the Fender Super Bassman(300W) with the pro neo cab 610 or 410. My second (hybrid) would be the Demeter VTBP-MJ-800D with a Aguilar SL410.
@@irwinerodrigues Yes over the Ampeg. I mostly play finger style with a clean sound…so SB ils good for that. I did loved the Ampeg with a plectrum. Unbeatable. 2X115 pro neo was also great, but the 610 or 410 had a bit more focus/punch sound.
Все 3 усилителя были фантастичны!!! Это жалко что в эти дни не много производителеи делаю полностю ламповые басовые усилители!!! Которые к тому сделаны не в жопе но качественно и на совесть!!!
I'm in the market for my first all tube amp. It's a toss up between the Ad200B and the SB300 as that is what is available where I live. I'd love to know your all time favourite tube amp.??? I notice you use the SB300 in a lot of videos :) How many times have you re-tolexed your fender rig? lol. Love these videos man!
Richard! Haha thanks! I’ve retolex the SB300 twice indeed. I’m a bit crazy. The SB300 is my all Time favorite. But you can consider the Traynor YBA-200-2 if available. Half the price of the SB and pretty close. As my favorite hybrid amp the Demeter VTBP-M-800D would be my first pick. Cheers.
I bought a Fender bassman 100t and a 4x10 cab in like new condition for 800$... amazing deal...and an amazing amp..I love it. I think it's comparable to the 300..as far as features. Doesn't have the same volume obviously...but it sounds amazing. And is super loud. For what I need.
Young amateur bassman here; it seems to me that the orange is a hand down winner when playing fingerstyle and the worst of them all when using a pick. What do you professional and long timer bassmen think?
Humm, i’m not a pro bass player neither. But I felt the oposite. (Based on my taste and need) The orange was cool with a plectrum but not so with fingers. It’s all a matter of taste.
@@jochoui Honestly, I thought the Orange sounded great w both. Are you saying the SB doesn't sound as good as the other 2 w a pick? Even w the vintage channel? Also Jo, can you use both channels at the same time w a Y cable with the Orange and or Fender like you can an SVT?
Hummm, I'm not the Orange owner ;) but I was happy to try it Live for free. To me, the Orange and SVT are in the same Ball park. They sound better with a pick. Finger style, they are kinda "muddy". You have to push em hard. I'm mainly a finger style player and I like loud clean bass sound. Superbassman IS my holy grail! ;)
@@jochoui You're vids have sold me on the SB. To me the biggest diff vs a vintage SVT is the SVT has no MV & lacks drive at lower volumes. The newer SVT has an MV. How would you compare the vintage SVT to the newer SVT (that has an MV)?
@@jochoui The Orange has much more OD because of the MV. It only has 4 tubes and is lighter, so I would also prefer the Orange over the 73 SVT. However it is overpriced. The SB or even a Traynor or 300 watt Bugera will do the job nicely for a lot less.
@@jochoui And oh, BTW, you say the Orange & SVT sound muddy w finger picking. Can't you just turn up the treble, turn down the bass & low mid settings on the EQ to compensate?
From my humble experience, an old SVT has nothing to do with recent model. Old SVT are so cool. But they "breaks" (overdriven sound) too fast for my taste. An old SVT player must use overdrive in his sound.
