1 year old baby Orangutan Jarang gets some awesome kisses and cuddles from
loving mother Jingga.
Update from June 2024
Baby Jarang is soon to be undergoing a medical operation for his bi-lateral scrotal hernia.
The Zoo is hoping this will help his mobility and they have been waiting for him to get strong enough for the procedure.
The enclosure was very busy with keepers and veterinarians observing Jingga and Jarang
and mom kept him very close to her all day.
He looked much stronger than we have seen him before and was climbing up his mother
and clinging on to her very well.
Orangutan Jingga, is a RU-vid sensation, she rose to fame after a video of her reacting to a magic trick went viral on RU-vid. - Monkey Sees A Magic Trick
On the 14th June 2023 she gave birth to a critically endangered Bornean baby orangutan, her first baby, a boy, was fathered by Kawan, who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands, after the previous male, Ramon, did not produce any offspring with the female group at Blackpool Zoo

I think Jingga definitely has learned some things from watching Summer. She seems to be doing things more and more like an experienced Orangutan mother would do. She is a sweetheart. And Jarang is so cute. I hope his surgery does very well. Love them both.

Putting all of the controversy aside l think it is obvious of how much Jingga loves Jarang. I so hope that Jarangs surgery is successful and that this very special mama and baby thrive and have a long and peaceful life.❤

I've been to see them twice. First, when he was born. He was so tiny because he was born premature. The second time was April this year. He's absolutely gorgeous and so tiny.

😓He continues to make nursing motions after she has removed him. I feel so sorry for Jarang. Jingga held him close to her chest though! I’m so relieved to see that.

Those motions are due to his neurological condition. I forgot what they are called but they are common in several types of neurological diseases.

The zoo has posted that they are looking into his delayed development, but the results are inconclusive. I hope the hernia surgery helps him, but I’m pretty worried that there is something else going on with Jarang. I’m also pretty worried about how Jingga will be when her baby is taken away for the surgery. Will she be stuck with Summer and her baby? So worried for both of them.

Jingga constantly gets the bad end of what's happening. She will hopefully accept her son back when he's returned. And during recovery, she doesn't become too depressed or detached. Jarang shows a lot of signs of neurological issues. Some of which can account for his physical development delays but not all of them. Everyone (vets, doctors, other medical professionals and great ape/primate experts) I have consulted with are perplexed as to the main cause but do agree on two things 1. There are at least two issues. And the zoo seems to be addressing one of them. 2. Jingga clearly loves her son and it is amazing watching how she adapts to raising a special needs baby, even more so considering her past and being a first-time mom. It was nice to see someone thinking about the separation and what it will do to mom who will not understand Jarang is coming back. She may be concerned when he comes back "injured" and hopefully will not put up any mommy defenses towards the keepers.

@@Axalotal he is floppy. That worries me and seems neurological as you say. But also, she has never bounced him in the air and always held back his arms to keep him from pushing forward. The neuro thing. I am haunted by a wee video a zoo guest posted of Jingga happily eating something or other, but also, accidentally sitting right on Jarang’s head. He is seen from behind bouncing up and down trying to free his head. And, in this video here, he squirms like crazy when she cups her head over his face. I don’t want to criticize her at all. She is a sweetheart. But could it be that she accidentally injured him…interfered with his breathing somehow? Does that cause neuro problems? I’d love it you could say no, of course not! She is so attached to him in this video and they are going to separated for at a least some days…maybe longer :(

A lot of people would jump on me for taken up for her and this being her first baby offspring. I understand that they was concerned about the baby and the way she was holding him and everything but what a lot of people don’t stop to think about is that these are not humans they will not act like humans. They will not treat the babies like humans because they are not human. And she did a great job with her sweet little one.. These 2 are in my prayers ❤❤❤❤

OMG. I get in so much trouble for defending Jinnga. I've even had comments removed for simply pointing out they are not humans and cannot think of them as such. That being said, in recent videos thankfully less ignorant people are commenting. Thanks for looking out for J&J ,❤️

The reason Jinnga has been criticized so much is because if you look at the way other mother orangutans treat their babies, she is way lacking on her mothering skills. Orangutans are supposed to be on their mother's constantly for a year at least and she always threw him on the ground so that she wouldn't have to carry him around the enclosure. When she feeds him, she always removes him after just a few minutes. She is definitely not a good mom compared to the other orangutan moms I have seen on youtube.

She left him face down in wood chips. She carrying him on her foot by his arm while she swung around from the roof. When he reaches forward with his arms, she pushed him back by his elbows and now, it seems, she holds him in a manner which prevents him from moving. His upper body is very weak. I think he is teething, but other baby orangutans can pick up things and chew on them. Some suck their thumbs. I don’t blame Jingga, but I am mystified by the zoo. it’s not her fault. It never has been.

@@rosiepena8917 no honestly or orangutan babies will stay with their mother for seven years to learn everything. They need to know if they’re a female how to become a mom if they’re male how to become a leader and we are all human and we don’t really understand the animals completely that we think that we love so dearly, but it was just something in her. There’s just some orangutans that will not take care of their babies. They will give birth and then just walk away just like other animals. It’s just like a dog cat gorillas chimpanzees whatever else is out there, but at least she tried and she’s getting better. And thank you and have a wonderful day. Sorry taking me so long to get back with you.

Why? He is a part of the natural order of things. He is special needs, mom and the zoo are aware and doing the best they can. There is no guarantee his condition will change significantly.

Um, I somehow doubt that RU-vid videos figure prominently in orangutans' thinking. However, if you insist on anthropomorphizing them, do you think disabled human children should be locked up and hidden away? Of course you don't.

We want to bring you an update about our young male orangutan, Jarang, who will be one on June 14th. When he was born to first-time mum Jingga, he initially showed positive progress, however, he has since given us cause for concern as he has been developing more slowly than expected. We have been closely monitoring him and have been consulting with experts from across the UK and beyond, including veterinary staff and specialist paediatricians. Extensive investigations have been conducted to determine the cause of this delayed development, all of which have been inconclusive at this stage. What we do know is Jarang was born with a bilateral scrotal hernia, which requires surgery and this could be hampering his mobility. Until now, this surgery for his hernia has not been considered viable due to his size and we have been waiting for him to gain enough weight for us to be able to proceed. The operation has now been confirmed and will take place soon. As with any medical procedure, this comes with inherent risks, but all the experts we have consulted have advised that the surgery is necessary to give Jarang the best possible chances of becoming more mobile. We had noted that Jingga demonstrates some unusual maternal behaviours at times, especially in the way she holds and carries Jarang. After discussions with primate experts, we now believe that Jingga is adapting her mothering to compensate for Jarang’s delayed development and lack of mobility. We are committed to continuing to work with the industry’s most respected primate specialists to achieve the best outcome and we will update you as soon as we can. Everyone here at Blackpool Zoo is hopeful that Jarang will come through the surgery fighting fit and ready to start exploring his home. We’re sure you’re all rooting for him too 💚

The zoo said Jarang has an inguinal hernia and they have to operate so he can be more active in his movements. Jarang is one year now and he can't do what a one year orang can.

That's a big feed? She only let him drink milk for less than 2 minutes then she pulled him away! She almost dropped him when she was putting him back on her arm! I still think she is a terrible mother. The only reason she holds him more is because there is another mother there and she probably thinks she will take him from her if she leaves him lying around like she used to.

Hernia. Trust me, I had a femoral hernia and 2 years later after surgery I still have pain. It's not easy.

То что к ним подселили мамочку с детенышем , даёт уже результат , Джинга держит детёныша ближе к себе , хотя все - равно ногой . Но сынок молодец , крепко держится руками и сиську нашёл, Джинга терпела сколько могла пока он ел . Не может она почему - то долго кормить грудью , но ведь это и у женщин бывает . Скорее бы уже сделали операцию, тогда и ножки Бог даст заработают .❤❤❤❤

They serm yo handle the babies like their wild cousins in borneo. In jungles mother's have to work to find food moving up and down their territory abd warding off jaguars and pumas abdsnajes that would take avaby on its iwnso num handles them as she can in wilds there's no room fir social niceaties

She actually has no mothering skills, unfortunately for the little baby. Mother sees him more as a toy than her baby. The zoo should have stepped in to surrogate the baby, teaching mother how too. then, when the baby was stronger physically, create a union of bonding. You can clearly see the stress and strain on the baby Orangutan

There is the comment on community page. I haven't checked how different it is compared to the zoo's own. But somehow... There was a confirmation that they have consulted the industry's best experts. Note the word "industry", it is quite telling about their view on the matter and who they are, first and foremost. Until now, they really have considered Jarang's health as some sort of hush hush trade secret.

Read the material from the zoo before being so judgmental. He would likely not be any further ahead if he had been raised by a surrogate. He’s obviously being fed, whether by mom or bottle or both. Jingga is a first time mom doing the best she knows how to do with a special needs baby. And good on her for not abandoning him.

I believe the zoo is investigating, but no diagnosis…of course, they told everyone there was nothing wrong with him developmentally…now they say something else…so…hmmm …I found the zoo’s statement ominous.
