Orca Morgan's life in captivity

In June 2010, a young orca is found swimming alone, lost along the Dutch coast. A former Dutch State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Agriculture decides to export Morgan to Loro Parque, an animal park on the Canary Islands of Spain, with daily orca shows as one of its most popular attractions.
Statement of Loro Parque:
The Dutch State Council ‘Raad van State’ stated in 2019 that the transfer of Morgan was completely legal and that they did not object to either her breeding or participation in educational presentations that were already in place at Loro Parque. Also the Spanish Cites rejected all the claims of the Free Morgan Foundation.

People say Keiko's story was a failure. I disagree. He was released into the wild, survived on his own, did not starve to death. He didn't join a pod and he did seek out human contact but he was free to do as he wished, to feel the ocean, the tides and current. He did not bake to death in a swimming pool. He died free animal, traveling thousands of miles. That's a success.

@@JoyfulNerd400 so would you state that keeping an animal in horrific conditions alive is better just so it doesn't die? Seriously!? No one is saying "just put them back in the ocean and let them alone completely", obviously this wouldn't work. There needs to be a strategy on how to do this. But literally anything is better than keeping them in a concrete tank for all their life.

Almost all orcas at Loro Parque (except for Morgan and Keto) are related to Tilikum. Kohana and Skyla are his daughters, Tekoa is his son and Adan is his grandson. Tekoa is also the grandson of Gudrun (one of the orcas mentioned in the video). Keto (the orca who killed Alexis Martinez) is the son of Kalina (SeaWorld's first Baby Shamu) and the grandson of Katina (the matriarch of SeaWorld Orlando).

Love how the Sea World guy just brushes off Gudrun's death. This doc omits that Gudrun's first calf, Taima, did survive, but the guy doesn't mention that Gudrun probably suffered the complications that killed her because they kept using her in photo ops on the slide-out, even when pregnant, meaning that she was not only experiencing pressure on her body from being on a solid surface, but doing so while pregnant, which put pressure on her babies too. Her second calf had developmental disabilities and struggled to swim normally. Since Nyar was basically useless to them, SeaWorld hurriedly inseminated Gudrun again to try and get a healthy calf. But they continued to do the slide-out photos, and Gudrun's third calf died in utero, but got stuck and Gudrun couldn't deliver the calf. So SeaWorld decided to just stick a winch in her uterus and yank the baby out. The calf was released, but their callousness led to Gudrun being injured and she died a couple days later from internal bleeding. Her second calf, little Nyar, died about a month later.

I went to Loro Parque when I was on holiday, I remember being so naive thinking the pools were so big (because to a child they are) I absolutely loved it I came away with a dream of being a trainer, I thought it was so magical the relationships between trainers and orcas. I’m now older and understand orcas so much more and I have felt so guilty for having these thoughts of wanting to participate in these animals suffering even though I was only young, I’d literally much rather get on a boat and see them in the wild than see them perform to be fed scraps! Places like these really do sell you a dream and act like everything is dandy.

What is sick, is they lied and try to say she is deaf, but not long after going to that cursed park they give way she responds to voice and whistle commands just fine. She was never deaf. On top of that, Orca's in the wild mature sexually much the same rate we humans do and at the youngest may start breeding between 16-20 years of age. But they tried to breed Morgan when she was just 6. They also admit the 'alpha' is 9 years old? The GRANDMOTHER of the pods are who normally lead the groups, and the thing's they know are taught and passed down. Not some child born in a cage who has no idea how to even be an orca. This group on a 'breeding loan' is just a group of kids with a bunch of people thinking they know best.

There was an interview with some of the staffs (including Dr. Javier A) a while back stating Morgan adopted the sounds of those other orcas and the people at the park planing to do a little research to see how she begins to learn more and more of those other orca tones over time, this was though 5months after her move. It is also stated they had to make sure Morgan and Ula can 'hear' each other during the separation of hand feeding the calf. Also, the research report of Morgan been "deaf" was never stated, just only she 'may' have some hearing deficiency and further research is needed but the park never allowed, or if they did the papers were never made public.

AquaIslander Well unfortunately it doesn’t matter if Ula and Morgan could hear each other! Ula like so many other orcas calves in captivity died. And yes they do state flat out that they believe Morgan is deaf. Also orcas in the wild that are from different pods who obviously speak their own dialect are able to communicate with other orcas from other pods! Scientists don’t know how of course but they are all able to communicate with each other when needed. So not so shocking that young Morgan would be able to learn or even mimic the dialects of the pod she’s stuck with.

The biggest joke was they claimed Morgan has auditory issues & then went on how they want to "study how baby orcas develop language & learn sounds from their mothers" on Ula... Yeah, brilliant idea to study how baby orcas hear & learn to speak if the mother is (partially) deaf. So they either lied all the time about Morgan's hearing issues or they chose the worst research object possible with Ula.

I feel the same way. As a child I though it was an awesome place, now it makes me sick. I don't think we can give these animals a place in captivity where they can thrive. Most animals live a must longer life in captivity, then the would in the wild. Orcas don't even life half as long. That should be proof enough for anyone. Problem is that all the so called expert are a sea world people, who push there own story line. And everyone else is painted to be nutjobs.

I can't say for other parks and aquariums, but SeaWorld just lost a lawsuit (to the tune of $63 million) brought against them by investors outraged at the pile of BS the company told them in order to secure funds. They've also announced an end to their breeding program. Not to mention that OSHA put the kibosh on allowing trainers to get in the water with the animals (their #1 money maker) after the whole Dawn Brancheau tragedy. Yeah, it's certainly not ideal, since the animals they've had since before the release of "Blackfish" are being allowed to live out the rest of their lives in the parks. And it's pretty clear it's out of an attempt to save face, not genuine concern for the well-being of the animals. Profits and attendance at the US parks dropped by 84% in less than a year. But I think it's pretty much the best compromise we're gonna get. And the result is the same regardless of why the board of directors made the decision: SeaWorld will no longer be keeping cetaceans once the current captive animals have all passed away.

There's no way to do subject justice within the limited scope of a YT comment. I know about the other parks, but can't find how the actual company SeaWorld contributes to Asian and Russian parks. And the relationship between Asian countries and whale/dolphin hunting/capture is a completely different, enormous can of worms. There are a few also called "Sea World" but they have nothing to do with trademarked SeaWorld in the US. If you have sources, please share.

I think many of us from a certain era were told by all sources that these types of parks were the good guys, the rescuers, and the scientists. I am heartened by how many people respond with compassion though once they have the full story.

Back in the late 80's I visited an amusement park in Ohio. There was a pool, not very big, with one dolphin in it swimming in circles. I was able to stand right at the edge and watch this animal going around and around. The look in its eyes has haunted me ever since...a mixture of anxiety, anger and frustration...and I never want to see that again. These animals do not belong in captivity.

We have figured out how to release damn near every other kind of animal, but they want us to believe that it's not possible for orchas. The basics are the same: 1) Address medical issues. 2) Minimal contact with humans. 3) Promote natural skills and behavior. 4) Locate the most suitable environment for release. 5) Release or find a suitable sanctuary if an extreme situation dictates it (ie. disability or no suitable environment exists in the wild). Sanctuary is a last resort in rehabilitation models.

The answer is 1) because she was so sick when she was found that she required months of care to bring her back to full health and in that time she became habituated to humans and 2) she was discovered in an area where orca are not found, and she is from a population that isn't really studied, so we don't know who her pod is in the wild, so she couldn't be reunited with them. 3) release is impossible now that we know about her deafness. You can actually locate orca pods based on dialects. You simply take a recording of the pitches she uses and match those to pods that would be local to the area they found her in. Other key features like markings and fluke/dorsal patterns and shapes can be a key characteristic in identifying different orcas. Orcas dont abandon their young, if they found the mother shed most certainly welcome her baby.

Last I knew, most Western parks have put an indefinite moratorium on breeding and keeping these animals in captivity in the wake of "Blackfish" exposing how awful these programs are. The compromise being that parks are able to keep those who were bred and born in captivity until they pass away. They've already lost their biggest money maker- live shows. In the US, OSHA put an industry wide ban on trainers getting in the water with the animals after the death of lead trainer Dawn Brancheau. (Last name may be spelled wrong. I'm too lazy to check, atm.) It's certainly not ideal, but better than nothing. If you haven't seen it, Blackfish used to be on Netflix, but is also available on other VOD services. Just be warned, there's some pretty graphic content. Another great resource is the book, "Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish" by former Sea World Orca Trainer John Hargrove.

Them saying it’s impossible to find her original pod is not necessarily true. It would’ve been difficult. But it would’ve been possible by listening to the sound waves generated by different pods around the world that are probably already on file somewhere from past research, and matched up her sound waves with the ones on file. Ever pod has a unique sound, and someone with a very good ear in this area or a computer program made specifically to set these languages apart could have figured it out. Yes, it’s a lot of work. But if they truly wanted to try everything they could to reunite her, it was an option. Thank you for all the work you did to present this heartbreaking documentary. 💔 It will take many years for the Chinese people to realize the cruelty and selfishness of this disgusting exploitation of natures creatures. Many men love money and will not stop their selfish behavior unless there is motivation to do so (think LAWS). Too many have gotten away with too much for too long. It would be excellent to see the perpetrators in the same kind of captivety that mirrors what they have done to dolphins and orcas. It is encouraging to see former abusers rehabilitate, especially the fellow in Bali. It gives one hope.😊

Morgan is nothing but a cash cow. Her captors will use her until she dies. Whether it be by breeding or in shows. Her life will be nothing like her wild kin get to enjoy. It's tragic. It's very heartbreaking.

@@shaikhbakhas1324 well they clearly can't survive as they should in cement, empty tanks, that's for sure. How would you feel being imprisoned and forced to perform for another species profit when you did ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong? Sure, you'd "survive" but what kind of life is that? You'd loose your fucking mind. There are other options, such as sea sanctuaries, breeding bans, etc., etc. Watch the full video.

@@shaikhbakhas1324 the matter is not about just releasing her in the wild again because clearly she will not do it that way the matter is that she is being used for breeding and shows, you are so worried about she not living in the wild because she is deft? Well, ok you're right she can't but don't come and say breeding and performing shows is the better for her and they aren't doing it for the profit... That's just naive. As people already mentioned there are sanctuaries and other ways to take care of an animal but makin them slaves for fun and money is not one of them 😔

All the uuhhhs and umms as they make up bs and lie on the spot, meanwhile the people who know what they're talking about speak with little to no hesitation. "They beach themselves for fun" my ass 😒 that's the behavior of a creature desperately wanting to get away from the constant physical assault from the other orcas.

the director of Loro Parque, Javier Almunia seems like he is just making some of this shit up as he goes and for them to tell the public and everyone else that morgan just so happened to get pregnant on accident is a croc of shit you can see it in his face and in the way he acts, he does not keep eye contact for very long and he is always looking around when answering questions and his response about morgan at the end of this video says it all and I also agree with ric o'berry about everything he was saying especially about the seaside sanctuary, they actually tried that with the orca they used to make free willy and i wish there was a way for me to help ric out and everyone else that is involved I'm sorry morgan.

This is awful as an animal lover myself I cried during this whole show I mean we are taking these innocent animals and driving them to suicide and for what our enjoyment ridiculous like do the people catching these animals from the wild not feel guilty for knowing that they are taking these amazing creatures out of there home just to take them to hell. I mean I understand none of it how is this even legal. I agree that if an animal has no chance of survival save it and if it can’t return to the wild then take care of them the best way you can but don’t use it for entertainment and enjoyment that’s just petty and cruel. I don’t how people live with themselves like you go to sleep knowing you are being cruel and SEVERELY MISTREATING these animals are it doesn’t bug you I find it DISGUSTING that people would rather take the money than the being a good person. You are able to take these animals away from there home and everything and you act like its nothing. If you were trapped in a a pool that was only as big of a small bathroom and you were not taken care of given the bare minimum and was expected to perform the best and you wouldn’t go crazy. Its all about the money. Pathetic, gross, money hungry, and all around AWFUL people! Absolutely HEARTBREAKING! 😭🤮😡💔
