Excellent video! These are some of the most practical videos out there! As for composition methods, I've found that having a "musical idea", in the Schoenbergian sense, and making the whole piece a derivation/development of said idea, has made things easier-- it will inevitably have a sort of gestalt cohesion, even if not on a surface level, musically speaking.
I'm not even interested in writing orchestral music (for now), but I somehow find your videos really fun and engaging to watch. Thanks a lot for making them!
The original melody is so beautiful and I’d think that if you were writing a full arrangement you’d have a lot more time to develop the ideas. I really think the minimalistic first version gives the beautiful alto flute the space it deserves. It gets swamped pretty quick. I play woodwinds and have played alto flute. It’s beautiful but not loud. Particularly in the middle and low register. Just like flutes it can cut above it’s written D above the stave but there it’s real flute range but in my opinion it’s better lol. It’s a thicker and richer texture. Not every flautist owns one. Pro orchestras yes. Also enjoy finding contra bass clarinets and bassoons. They sound great though. Thanks for explaining your process. Everyone writes different and seeing this helps me refine my process.
Yes, I noticed your use of Studio One as well. It's the only DAW I use ... I find it easy to use & powerful. With every version it gets better and better.
