Orchid aerial roots - Why Orchids grow them, what to do about them

Today we talk about yet another suggested topic: aerial roots on orchids!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
For a more in depth look at orchid roots in general, check this out • Orchid roots - Purpose...
In essence, most epiphytic orchid roots are aerial, with a few exceptions. This term refers to potted orchids and cultivated orchids, just for ease of conversation.
Roots which don't grow in the pot where humidity is higher, are adapted to very low moisture and a lot of air. Potting them suddenly might actually damage them. The reverse is also valid, so when repotting it is a good idea to pot the former potted roots and leave outside the aerial ones.
These roots will absorb the moisture in the air and grow just fine, but in very low humidity they might benefit from watering or misting.

I get really ashamed when I remember I cut all aerial roots on my very first orchid rescue. I simply did not know a thing about caring for orchids and I thought aerial roots were actually dead until I cut them 🤦‍♀️ Oh those rookie mistakes. I am happy the orchid started shooting new aerial roots 6 months later and I couldn't be happier.

I have long skinny roots growing up from the pseudobulbs into the air. They aren't turning brown but stay white. (the place they are at remains somewhat humid year round). I think it's a type of brassia (spelling?). Pseudobulbs, flowers have long brown and yellow spotted petals. Probably needs repotting? Note, it is actively sending up two long flower spikes. Grocery store orchid bought a year ago. More flowers this time than when I bought it. North window. All my orchids seem to thrive on neglect. 😅

So I have had 2 "stems" for months and they're about 6-8 inches long and had propped them up. I finally started repotting it today and had to look up some instruction. Now I know that the stems are just roots and I personally don't like the way they look. I'd like to just cut them off. Is it ok to do that or will that stunt the growth?

Do orchids grow by stacking ontop of one another? I have an orchid where it has old brown roots growing from the bottom of the plant that are down in the orchid bark. Then ontop of those leaves is another set of leaves with fresh whitish green aerial roots growing up and out of the middle of the leaf pair below it. Then ontop of that same thing, and same thing again. So it looks like my orchid has 3 orchids with aerial roots stacked on top of the original with the older roots in the bark, 4 total. It almost looks like I could separate them & have multiple orchids, but I'm not sure if this is how they grow. My other, older Orchid always just has one set of leaves (unless a new set is growing in, then the first set eventually turns yellow & falls off) with a couple aerial roots along with the bottom roots in the bark. But this one seems to continuously make new Orchids stacked on top of each other. Is this normal?

Why is it that most of the orchids sown here have few air roots. Same with those sold in nurseries and plant shops? Are they all young orchids or do you trim them back once in a while for esthetic purposes? I let my orchids grow wild and they form a tangled jungle appearance of green and lovely flowers. Thanks.

Thank you Sophie and Yomaira for your comments! I was thinking of guiding the root into the media before it becomes a true aerial root. In other words, the root is inch or less long where it can either continue growing in the air, or turn down into the media. I don't think that would harm it, no?

Can I put an aerial roots into medium if all other roots are dead
@mommy1157
@mommy1157 3 года назад
I have a phaleanopsis orchid that's not doing well. The average humidity here is about 80 all year round. I switched all 3 of my orchids to semi-water culture from bark about 3 years ago. Two have lots of roots going down and are doing well. One has only 1 root going down but 4 aerial roots but the arial roots are shriveling up and 2 of the 4 leaves are also getting wrinkled. I think it had more downward roots when I switched to semi-water. That single root has about 6 inches at the top that is mushy and brown but at the bottom of that root there is 3 inches of very healthy green root. If that last root that goes down dies, what should I do? Is there any way to encourage it to get another root going down? If it becomes without downward roots should I keep water in the container to provide some humidity and will it be likely to survive? I started spraying the roots and leaves today but it is in the kitchen so the humidity is frequently very high in there from cooking.

I'm not sure I'll get a response due tot he age of the video.. but here goes! I have a Phalaenopsis Orchid that I re-potted into a basket about 2 years ago (on advisement from an orchid "expert" at Lowe's). This past year, her aerial roots have grown through the openings of the basket and are stuck to the sides. I know she definitely needs to be re-potted because she is growing up and out of the basket, but also because I need to change the medium. How should I go about getting the roots off the wood? I don't want to cut or harm them but I don't know how else to get her out :( Overall she is very healthy, just finished blooming but just started new buds on the end of each stem. A new leaf grew as she was in bloom and she has another starting now; there are 7 beautiful, green full grown leaves. I just can't see how her roots look because I can't get her out. Any help would be appreciated! :)

Don't hear any explanation of why you double pot. can you please explain?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
Hi, if by double pot you mean using decorative containers, then it's mainly for algae prevention, longer water retention and decoration. It's very common for orchid collectors. Roots don't need the light to perform their main functions, photosynthesis is not a main function, in case you were also wondering this. Explaining decorative pots is a new thing, never needed to address it as much in 9 years as I did in the past month. So I'm guessing someone said something about it on social media. I would not worry about it ☺️
@pekoe46
@pekoe46 2 года назад
@@MissOrchidGirl It's just that they're always there but never explained why they're used. How does a double pot prevent algae? I would think the opposite - that it blocks the air circulation which prevents algae. And how does it act as as a longer water retention? Just that the inner pot isn't exposed to the air as much?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 года назад
It blocks light, so algae cannot photosynthesize and develop. It reduces a bit surface exposure to air and in very warm climates (such as mine) it also acts as water retainer. It's not more than a couple of days difference, but it's enough to save the day. Ventilation through the pot is not reduced much, since it's not creating a seal with the interior pot. The balance of air / moisture is mostly controlled by the way I mix my potting mix materials. This explains how the setup works with watering ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HOhNbae8Xtg.html also if you just type in the search bar 'missorchidgirl decorative pots' you'll find multiple videos where I talk about them.
