Orchid lovers often wonder about propagating their favorite plants, and it turns out, it's quite easy to do at home. Monopodial orchids like phalaenopsis can be propagated by dividing the stem, while sympodial orchids such as dendrobium can be separated by cutting leafy pseudobulbs. There's also the intriguing phenomenon of orchids spontaneously growing keiki plants. In my exploration, I came across various methods on RU-vid and the internet claiming to stimulate keiki growth, ranging from cytokinin keiki paste to using everyday kitchen items. I decided to try a method involving Aloe Vera leaf extract but unfortunately, it didn't go as planned. The orchid's peduncle turned yellow and died, leading me to doubt the effectiveness of the approach.
Frustrated, I began to scrutinize other videos and discovered a potential deception. Many creators seem to use fake keikis, probably from other tropical plants.
To uncover the truth, I delved into the biological mechanisms of orchid vegetative propagation. Orchids can naturally produce keiki clones under certain conditions, aiming for self-preservation and propagation. I like theroy that an Orchid will start to grow Keikis if it is in decline. I was given a small sick Phal and at the time I had no grow lights, it stayed on a fairly dim North facing window during winter here in the UK for about 3 months, I went to water it and noticed what looked liked a keiki. After depoting it I found that there were 2 keikis growing close to the crown, one very new keiki and one that already had 2 decent roots of it's own. I cut the larger keiki off about 6 weeks ago and it's doing very well. The smaller Keiki is now nearly ready to remove too, it has 2 small roots. It will be interesting to see if the Mother plant will go back to regular flowering after the 2nd and last Keiki is removed, maybe she will have the energy to flower again as she is now in much better health than when i first got her. Do very healthy Orchids produce Keikis very often?

Hi Thank you for the very useful video. On many other videos they say to use different kind of pots specially made with lots of holes on the sides, but you are using the regular pots with the wholes on the bottom. I feel the pots with lots of holes on the sides are very expensive so can I use the regular pot with the wholes on the bottom?

Did I misunderstand you? Around 10:30/11 minutes you said that they’re fake if they have more than one keiki? My one plant had 3 keikis on a single stem

In my opinion, keiki paste is actually pretty much scam. Using it on flowers spikes may stimulate only additional flowers growth, nothing else.

My plant started growing keikis after all the flowers fell off. Still no roots. I have no idea how to help them, could anyone suggest something?

My keikis grew for at least 2-3 months before they started growing roots. The one actually fell off and died before I could cut them off the stem because of how long I had to wait! Once they started to grow though, it was only about 2 months before I was ready to cut them off and plant them.

Did u notice in the videos that the spike they used to grow the keiki on was CUT from the plant?? A big difference. Because you tried 1 time to replicate the process and it failed, you assumed the videos were fake. Do you also think that so many people all over the world esp in developing countries have the time or the interest to make fake videos. Alot of those videos are made by orchid growers who have been cultivating orchids since childhood helping their parents churn out millions of plants to make a living. You speak alot about science which impresses me but your experiment wasn't very scientific and your conclusion is very cynical.

The creator of this video tried the experiment for herself, but aside from that she did a whole lot of research to back up her claims. I followed the instructions for such videos step by step as well and never got anything other than mold, waste of product, and my time. Are you saying that you've successfully propogated orchids this way? More than just one lucky fluke?
