"Orcs Must Die! 3" blends the tower-defence with third-person shooter mechanics, offering an chaotic but enjoyable solo or online co-op experience. With two campaigns totalling 23 missions, the game can be cleared in around 10 hours. However, unlocking all upgraded weapons, traps and trinkets will take considerably longer. The inclusion of co-op, leaderboards and weekly challenges all add substantially to the fun and replayability too.
The goal of the game is to prevent waves of orcs from entering a rift by strategically placing barricades and traps to force enemies into specific lanes and create kill zones. While traps play a large part, they can be easily overwhelmed, and players are required to constantly engage the enemies. Direct combat is tactical too however, whether you're thinning out groups of small enemies, targeting priority threats, or using crowd control and elemental effects to offset trap weaknesses. It sounds difficult to balance, but the game does it very well, even if experts at the game can cheese every level.
However, there are a few issues. The majority of items are locked behind a slow upgrade path based on performance, and decisions on unlocking new items and upgrades have to be made blindly without detailed specs. Resources for placing traps are generally limited too, and as soon as a level begins, you're locked into your 10-item load-out, which really limits a fun aspect of the game. There's also no saving mid game, with some levels taking 30 minutes or more. The characters too are lacklustre, and the story goes absolutely nowhere.
Overall... it doesn't deviate much from the previous games in the series, but it is still a very solid and tactical tower defence game, even if it leans more towards an action game with the constant shooting and running required.
