12:15 Something of note: When the crafting time says "1 day" it means "8 hours of work that day" cause you can't work on downtime activities for more than 8 hours per day. Meaning the Scribe does create first level scrolls in 4 hours

I think a great use-case for scrolls is crafting stuff like shield scrolls for your hexblade, haste scrolls for your vengeance paladin, or absorb elements scrolls for your artificer. A lot of classes get really good spells on their lists but have low spell slots. So being able to basically craft spell slots for them ahead of time is great.
@Flaraen
@Flaraen 7 месяцев назад
Shield and absorb elements both don't qualify, as they don't have a casting time of one action Edit: also haste is a 3rd level spell and doesn't qualify either
@draghettis6524
@draghettis6524 7 месяцев назад
A Hexblade would have a hard time using Shield scrolls, since they need to have them in hand when hit, and that means not having a shield or not having a weapon. Same for Paladin, but two-handing a weapon is better, and the problem is lessened since it's on their turn anyway. Artificers with absorb elements has the same problem as Hexblades.

So many neat things I’d not considered previously. This class makes crappy spells good spells to have, in more way than one! I never really realized just how much the subclass encourages you to obsess over scribing as many spells as humanly possible, just like a proper nerd. Looking forward to the final build video.

The ability to craft scrolls for half the cost could be a way to alleviate some of the cost of getting more spells: you can craft spell scrolls to sell/trade to get the funds to copy scrolls into your spellbook. It can get ridiculous after a while (in one game, we have so much money from crafting scrolls that it's absolutely insane), so the DM does need to come up with some reasonable limitations (market saturation, ability to work on a scroll during a normal adventuring day, etc.).

With the 14th level feature, you also can't use the spell to change damage types if you're casting a spell of the same level. Since it's gone from your book. Just wanted to mention it since I only just thought of this yesterday DURING the game I was playing. Something to consider.

I'm a big fan of using the daily scroll for mage armor. It may not upcast, but I only need to cast it once which means it opens up a preparation slot. In my opinion that is more useful than an extra second level spell slot for a spell that I'm preparing anyway.

@@olorin6494 100% You're better off spending 3 days of downtime and 75gp to make 6x Mage Armor scrolls. If you run out of scrolls you can always sacrifice a preparation slot I guess. As always great video Chris. I'm not sure I'd have my scribes wizard willy-nilly jump through a prismatic wall. Seeing as you make a dexterity save for each layer, that means 5 instances where you are going to get damaged or save for half. I can see a DM ruling that the One With The Word feature would only negate one layer of damage. Still my favorite wizard subclass though.
@elementzero3379
@elementzero3379 7 месяцев назад
I've never liked "One with the Word", but you're right that it's not bad if you are able to prepare for it. This depends upon the DM and campaign, of course, but probably should be workable in many games. I love the feel of this subclass, and I want it to be my favorite, but it also feels kind of fiddly, with lots of busy work. I guess it's thematically reasonable that the Scribe requires a ton of extra scribing to make its features work well, but it makes me uneasy when I think about playing it long-term. I'll probably need to do just that to form a proper opinion.

You want to get informed before you pick a scribe wizard, they, I mean, we excel in campaigns with lots of wizards who will be livid they can't counterspell because of the many uses of manifest mind, whose spellbooks will be absorbed by ours when they are defeated and, why not will be flabbergasted when we shrug off their finger of death!

Caustic brew, wither and bloom, and rimes binding ice both seem like decent upcast options. Caustic brew especially because it does ok upcast damage over time and forces creatures to keep taking it or waste their action to remove it. Rimes binding ice has similar reasons except is more about CC than damage.

One nice thing about the "One With The Word" feature is also that along your journey, you'll just naturally be collecting a lot of spells that are useful at the time, but have since aged out and you're likely never going to use again. Things like Sleep; it is a fantastic pick for a first or second level wizard, but it simply doesn't have the shelf life to carry through to level 14+. It allows you to still have those archaic spells maintain a certain level of usefulness in saving your life. With other wizards, these would just be forever sitting in their book collecting dust, never to be looked at again (unless some DM decides to just destroy their spellbook entirely). It's just a little bit of extra flavor that connects the Order of Scribe to their adventures along the way to that point.

I had a great time playing a Reborn Order of the Scribe wizard. Played him as a "Frankenstein's monster" created as an empty vessel for a necromancer to use as a failsafe body. An accident caused my character to gain conscienceness and the necromancer to instead bind with the spell book. Played it as if the spellbook was training my character to be a wizard in order to manipulate me into releasing him. Was great fun playing, with a great DM really leaning into the concept and play style. Unfortunately the party disbanded and I tried to play him again in a different group, but the new DM just wasn't as accommodating with scrolls or playstyle (but to mention deciding to shoehorn Elminster into becoming my spellbook, taking away a lot of my own agency 😢)

I'd like to petition to have Vortex Warp put back on the list for Master Scrivener. Firstly, it's a "free" teleportation spell which has got to be one of the least situational categories of spells. Secondly, two of the primary limitations that WOULD make it situational are aleviated... distance and self-only. Though not the optimal use, it can even be used on unwilling targets.
@chrisvossler8795
@chrisvossler8795 7 месяцев назад
True, though if we are only going to consider the free upcast feature, then Vortex Warp would be a better option for crafting as a normal scroll, since the upcast only improves its range (as opposed to giving you a second creature).

You know, if your party is traveling by ship, or on horseback, or even dashing a long distance, it's probably not possible to take your Manifest Mind with you. The only way it can move is by using your bonus action. So that's 30 feet per round. You can't carry it with you, and it can't just pop in and out of reality for free like a familiar can. We decided to strictly enforce that restriction in our campaign (since Manifest Mind is a bit OP anyway). So every time we need to travel quickly, I need to dismiss my Manifest Mind, and use a spellslot to summon it again at our destination.

If Master Scrivener's issue is that you can't prepare a spell ahead of time if you don't know what will happen later today, the solution is simple: Cast any of the divination spells that boil down to "DM, please spoil the rest of the session for me." Now you know what to prepare.

16:43. I just played in a Tier 4 Adventurers’ League game at a convention where a wizard broke their staff of the magi while being invulnerable to damage. The encounter was supposed to be this big huge epic battle that the DM did a great job of building up and we were all excited about, but this wizard 1-shot it. When he declared that he’s breaking his staff, I said, “You’re what?! Dude, it’s a staff of the magi!” And he goes, “It’s fine. I have five more.” So between ending the encounter before any of us got to do anything, and his cavalier attitude about it, the experience was ruined for the rest of us at the table.

I have always found Longstrider to be a really useful spell to pre-cast. It will really give that extra umph to the melee characters, and ranged characters are always happy to have some extra space to kite the enemy. My bard just took Fly for magical secrets at high mid-tier and I've been upcasting it to affect the whole party. This was just because we're all melee and flying demons nearly TPK'd us on more than one occasion. BUT, oh boy, the 60' fly speed! I didn't realise how absolutely massive that is as a buff, it's actually the stronger feature in open battles. 13:27 - I will argue that if the DM is using the Arcana check rules from Xanathar’s, having advantage on those checks to pump out scrolls is very nice. If you dip knowledge cleric for expertise in Arcana, a Scribes 19/Knowledge 1 with 20 INT has a +17 and advantage on Arcana, so even with Snake eyes you can guaranteed make the check to make a Level 8 or below scroll unless your DM rules that Nat 1s on ability checks are critical fails.

The thing with one with the word that a lot of people forget, is that even if you can't cast this spell anymore during the penalty time, you still can copy it in your spellbook if you've got them from another source, like another wizard spellbook, so technically, you could have always the same 18 levels of spells always on time out if you do your homeworks every days. Because yeah it never says that the spells that vanish out of your book need to be spells you can cast.

I would think that in most campaign actually coming across enough spells you can copy into your book and so really negate the temporary loss would be unlikely, even just a more reasonable 70 levels of spells perpetually MIA would be a fairly substantial junk spell count you have to have found. Yes you can copy them fast, and if you live long enough to become a level 20 arch mage that has been around the worlds and across the plains of existence its no longer a problem as your spell book will be some 10000 page tome of junk. But for most players I'd think that choice is actually going to remain challenging, you probably won't be forced to avoid the feature for fear of loosing your default signature spells but all the varied situationally useful ones in your book are at risk.

Also, I know you talked about how to fix spells before, do you have a list of "this is all the bad spells fixed"? Lastly, do you create any spells? The "guidance" is very vague and hard to follow. Do you have more concrete rules on how to create spells and if so would you share them? Thanks for your videos, knowledge and love of the game. Keep up the good work!

At around 11:50 you mention the difficulty of using a shield with the spellbook, due to some spells needing somatic only, and others needing a material focus (our book). You therefore say we might end up not taking an armor&shield dip, and instead going with Mage Armor. If we had a DM that was a real stickler for these details, how strongly would you consider a Mountain Dwarf (or old Githyanki) for Medium Armor proficiency, without needing to take a 1 level dip?

question about the free scroll: can you create a scroll that contains a spells cast at higher level than normal? Can you create a scroll that would cast longstrider at second level? BEcause if you can, that would make teh feature cast Longstrider at 3rd level, right?
@Edramon53
@Edramon53 7 месяцев назад
Pretty sure the free daily scroll is just cast one level higher than the spell's normal level. So if you use it on Longstrider, it'll always be cast as level 2. If you picked a spell that was normally level 2, it would be cast at 3.

Hi treantmonk, a few ideas for vids, partly inspired by one of the comments below. Do you use the sane magical item costs list at all in the games you run or play? it's a real gift to the community. maybe a video on your thoughts about it and an interview with the creator. It falls into the category of terrible rarity listings and actual game mechanics which is one of your skillsets. Optimising gear is a part of their game. likewise WedDM have an interesting mechanic for encumbrance in their Weird wastelands post apoc kickstarter book/pdf and we got close to using it in our game. Some thoughts and rules about accessing potions, homebrew or table rules and experience might provide informed solutions to toting enormous amounts of gear and importantly how accessible they are in combat. Also, "time out!" since your 6th ed video I've purchased DC20 Alpha and been following it closely. It might just well be the next campaign we run at our table. Thanks for making people aware of it.

I think kvothe is pronounced like quothe with a v. I dont actually know know so... It is just as likely to be pronounced quothe without the v.

I just posted a description of my own Scribes wizard, including a D&D Beyond link. But it seems this comment was silently swallowed by RU-vid. Are we not allowed to post links?

Wizards are cool, but I'm starting to think that Bards are the best casters.
@paulmerritt9352
@paulmerritt9352 7 месяцев назад
Bards can pick up spells outside of their class options. So this argument you're making doesn't make sense to me. Additionally, with feats like: Magic Initiate, Fey Touched, Shadow Touched, Spell Sniper, Telepathic, Telekinetic, Ritual Caster, a bard can collect additional spells without sacrificing on their advantage
@paulmerritt9352
@paulmerritt9352 7 месяцев назад
Their advantage being better hit die, and the ability to where armor, and in some cases employ shields. That's if you want to go that route. If your campaign is more skills or melee based, you can take on the feats that accentuate those characteristics. Sure, wizards and sorcerers can do amazing things, but there is literally nothing standing in the way of a bard being built to accomplish the same things. For instance, a big feature for Scribes wizard is the ability to transmute a spell. Meta magic adept allows for the same thing. Yes, there are arbitrary constraints on the feat, but the point still stands. Eldritch Adept can also be taken on as well, in conjunction with Magic Initiate. Also, the versatility of the Bard when it comes to roleplay is it's own kind of magic, if you'll allow it at your table. As far as melee is concerned Dexterity is the go too for any bard outside of charisma. Both attributes are what the Bard is proficient in. I'm sorry, I just don't see where your assertion is correct @mogalixir

its stunning some1 at the designer team thought itll be a good idea to make scribing scrolls process take 27 years... Id like to remind u this game is high fantasy - magic, magical creatures and magic items r present and abundant. Some1 has to craft them. And turn a profit. To feed their family. Before they grow up and start their own family. Why wouldnt they use the rules from dnd3...
