this pond was not my intention but a happy outcome at the end of a drainage project. it was only going to be a tiny plunge pool but thought this would be cool while the excavator was there. here is the original drainage project • eliminating sump pump ...

post10 has fought the beavers for so long that he's finally become a beaver himself. DOT is going to install a culvert when his pond gets big enough to flood the road, but don't worry because they'll come back to smash it with an excavator later.

@craignewman6709
@craignewman6709 Год назад
@@fanOfMinecraft-UAs_channel it’s coming from the house. He put a garden hose into the pipe to fill the pond, that comes from a well. But the purpose of the setup is for ground water seepage into the house. The buried pipe carries it out to the retention pond.

Its my understanding that part of what wears the liner out is UV light. Lining the bottom of the pond with stones should help protect it, even from animals like goats, as well as the light. It would also give a place for you to anchor more vegetation.
@jttech44
@jttech44 Год назад
Uv only penetrates about 3ft into freshwater, so as long as any exposed liner is deeper than that it's not a concern.
@anoobisthelost2110
@anoobisthelost2110 Год назад
UV yes partly if the material is fully exposed to the sunlight it will go through expansion and shrinking cycles due to the climate/temperature changes it will eventually tear or crack.With the liner being underwater it may exceed the 10 year life expectancy because the water keeps it from drying out.

I had a small pond that I built, waterfall and all, and the liner I used was 65 mil. It lasted about 3 years before moles found it and chewed their way through it. I'm a fisherman so any small fish I caught went into the pond along with frogs and aquatic plants. I even put a light and a color wheel in the bottom to shine on the waterfall. It worked and looked great. I had lots of complements on it. But those dad gummed moles ruined it all. I really do like the way you fixed your pond up. You worked very hard on it but you will benefit from it in the long run. I like how you've got it all planned out. I can't wait to see how it turns out once all the plants get established. 🐸

@@post.10 Fun fact, moles do not like the smell of pigs, oil and grease from cooking pig parts works well to remove ground rodents when it is poured on the ground around the area. On the bad side of things, depending on how you look at it, you will get more bears in the area.
@post.10

For the heck of it, out here in Vancouver Canada I don’t put a shelf in. I dig a deep even base right to the edge. If I want plants on the side, I place the plants in a black plastic pots with holes. Then place those pots on inverted pots. Keep the bottom an even 4 feet deep with no shelves. This prevents the blue herons, egrets and etc. from standing on the shelf and picking off your koi, gold fish or whatever fish you have. Love your videos! Cheers, Geoff in Vancouver.

I had a small pond that I dug out. I used a truck tarp as the liner. Worked good. Kept the pond filled with water by connecting PVC pipe to the down spout of the house. Every time it rained, it filled up the pond. Put in native small fish. Take a net to the lake or pond and then empty them into the pond. One time I was trying to scoop up small fish when some children saw it and asked if they could catch the fish for me. Kicked back and let the young ones do the work. Found that birds, small animals, and even deer would hang out near the small pond.

Great looking pond! Once it grows in it will look very natural. Think about adding submerged water plants to help control algae build up some have mentioned. The ones with floating leaves are best (water lily, water plantain, water hyacinth, frogbit, etc). They use nutrients to compete with algae and block sunlight (both help prevent algae overgrowth), and regulate water temp in hot weather. Pond should be 40-60% shaded.

Use biological mosquito donut "dunks" too for skeeters, or get eastern mosquito fish. Id steer clear of snails though, they carry parasites that are deadly.

Come spring/summer all the fish come alive again! 🌺

Goats would destroy everything but ducks and chickens sound like a good idea, ducks eat slugs if you get that problem.

Nice build! I've built a couple ponds myself. I'm wondering where the overflow for the pond is, especially for spring wet season- also, wouldn't recommend cattails, unless they are put in a pot, then placed in the pond. They are so invasive, and once they are established, they will overtake the pond. Not sure, but I'm thinking it's possible that the roots may also compromise the integrity of the liner, even a thick one. Can't wait to see how your pond matures! They are alot to create, but rewarding 😊

Job well done! I've been thinking of making somthing simular for my ducks where there's a small swampy area in my yard, so it's useful to see how it's done. You should fence off around the pond so the ducks can swim in it, as that way you don't need a seprate water source for them. I could also see the pond serving as irragation for your garden, which could be done by pumping water out from the pond and through a pvc pipe with small holes drilled in it, (or could be gravity fed if you put it underwater). If you do get only 2 ducks make sure they're both female, as you'll need at least 4 females if you plan on getting a male duck. I've been raising ducks, chickens, goats, and geese, as well as growing vegetables, for 15 years in Central Mass so if you need any tips/advice I'm happy to help out. Ducks make a mess so if you plan on getting chickens too I'd recommend keeping them in a seprate pen then the ducks, (they can still share the outdoor space, just need to have seprate areas for sleeping at night)

Good morning from Scotland Post First of all can I congratulate you on the pond, great job done. I have made ponds for years, you mentioned about natural evaporation, yes I have had many customers who have called me about they’re pond leaking and loosing water!. Trying to explain to them that water does evaporate naturally can be hard. I quite often use old carpets for lining pond bases and Terram weed control membrane for the sides, old Capet can take a hell of a weight if people or certain animals stand on it. I used to build wild ponds and like you, I always have a beach area for animals to easily exit a pond, people don’t understand that animals just like humans, need an escape area!. I have been to numerous ponds to do a total clean out and found dead cats, rabbits and various other wildlife dead in the bottom of a pond, all because they couldn’t get out of the pond because the sides were straight down, so sad. I have a 5000 gallon pond at my own home, it has golden Orfe and Koi in it, it is 7 feet deep at one point so the fish can get down in the winter, fish all happy, I also built it up 3 feet so I could sit on the edges. Fantastic video Post and always great to see how other people build ponds, I am retired now but I still look after some peoples ponds as I became friends with them. Kind regards Post, keep up the fantastic work you do. Johnny

This was a very fun build! Is that PVC pipe connected to your downspouts? One thing about ducks, is that they will make the water very nutrient rich from their droppings as they swim, which can make algae blooms. Maybe install a siphon or something similar. Cleanup can be *Really* gross but if clean up isn't a worry, it could be very fun!

That would have been a good idea had I thought of it at the time but no this pipe is coming out of the basement which the property has a water table that is above the basement floor probably 8 months out of the year so this will be dripping that entire time to eliminate the sump pumps, the pipe install is in my pinned comment

I have a retention pond behind my house that is home to anywhere from 60-100 ducks. Personally, I prefer the company of the larger American Pekins and Magpies. They have great individual personalities and are capable of being domesticated. The plain Mallards, they don't have nearly as much personality and they always are skittish. The Pekins and Magpies are very smart. I have eagles around here and they straight up vanish before I even notice the Eagles are around. The Eagles will grab a Mallard or rabbit for a snack while the others are hiding. There are Pekins and Magpies at minimum 5 years old. The Mallards, I watch the population fluctuate with each year.

Can't that bear read? That's clearly a moose xing. Cool pond, glad to see that from beginning to end.

Nice job. Don't know if you considered this, but you need to put in a runoff that is the max height you want the pond to be, but below the inlet level at the sumps you have in, otherwise during periods of heavy rain, you're going to get backup into the house and/or a lot of erosion on the low side of the pond due to overflow.

Tip for buying stone/other building supplies and this works worldwide, order in tonne bags or in bulk because the price stops being per item and is sold by weight making the end cost per item more like 20% of the original price.

Yeah, buying from a local quarry is much cheaper than those bags. I can get it by the Ton for $10.00 for crush stone. If I want it washed, then I tilt the bed on my dump truck and wash it down with a hose. It’s pretty dirt free to begin with.
