RIP Donald Sutherland. Should've been nominated for an Oscar for your wonderful performance

Donald Sutherland in this movie was the best for me. A man confused, trying to do the right thing for his wife and son and at the end has to make a choice. He didn't get an Oscar because back then male actors did not win unless they became violent or just aggressive.

That Mary Tyler Moore didn't win the Oscar for her incredible performance in this film is a crime. She captured perfectly the complex and multidimensional reactions of a person devastated and heartbroken by the death of a loved one. It is truly one of the great performances in film.

Beth was truly grieving after the loss of her son Buck. She did whatever she could to distract her from the pain by golfing, shopping, and traveling as well as phone calls. Heartbreaking film. Also, one of hope. Fine performances all the way around. I was so glad that Timothy Burton's character, Conrad, had Dr. Berger, who was there for him, when he had a breakthrough. His friend's death triggered all the emotions that he had been suppressing. When Conrad says, "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been there for me. Thank you." When Berger let's him know that " I'm your friend." And he gives him a shoulder to cry on and a hug that he badly needed. But more importantly, he listened and he gave him acceptance. And he helped him to forgive himself for surviving, when his brother, Bucky, let go of the boat and died. As for Mary Tyler Moore. She gave a performance that deserved nomination. Her Denial was complete. Her not being able to be around him or talk to him, with her Mother, she indicated she was thinking of sending him away to boarding school.( To get him completely away.) She manipulated her husband into excluding him from going to Texas, where he could have seen her brother, his uncle, and their family. She blamed Conrad for his brother, Bucky, dying. If you had a child, who died and the other child survived, wouldn't you think that you would have Thanked what ever powers that be for having your surviving son. You would want to hold onto him and if anything be overprotective so that nothing else could harm him. She acted like he part of the furniture in the house. Actually, I think she cared more for "appearances." Her husband after seeing Dr. Berger, himself, started to see through her act. He finally wised up. The ultimate betrayal. Was when he asked her, " Do you love Me? Do you you?" Her pathetic answer was, " I feel the way I've always felt about you." She couldn't say "I love you." I wonder if she ever lived him or if he was just someone who could "provide" a way if life, and all the material things that went with an upper middle class comfort, with her able to manipulate him, without anything being asked of her. Her husband was right when he summed it up. " It would have been alright, if there hadn't been any Mess. But you can't handle Mess. It has to be easy." So once he said, " I don't think that I love you anymore. And I don't know what we have been playing at." She left. Because she could "fool" him or manipulate him anymore. She took the easy way out. Probably went to Texas and found a richer, more gullible fool, that she could manipulate and lead around. Sad. That It would take the death of the son, to finally rip away the facade of money can buy happiness. Unfortunately, it cannot. It doesn't buy immunity from death, or sickness, or getting old, or make you a better person, or make kinder or buy you integrity or character. All of which, Donald Sutherland's and Timothy Hutton' s character, they, both, had. She was "lacking" in substance. I did feel sorry that she was the one losing. They would, ultimately, be better off. She had walked away from the most valuable things that mattered. Father and Son would heal, and grow, and change. I'm afraid, the Mother would not. Just my opinion. It was a beautiful, complex film.

does anyone remember the line at the end from Donald Sutherland (Calvin) when Mary Tyler Moore leaves? Conrad steps outside and his father says something very simple but since I originally saw this film in school we analyzed it and the line where he tells Conrad (Timothy Hutton) at the end outside "The yard seems smaller in the winter" is very significant. It is metaphorical to Moore leaving and that there is one less person in the home, a smaller family. You would never know that this is the hidden message in that statement, heck I wouldn't unless a teacher pointed it out, LOL. Great movie, but VERY sad. A must see though, at least once b/c watching this over and over will just make you cry.

This film has been a lifesaver for me as well. I identify so much with Conrad’s struggle and the lessons he learned under Berger’s care are timeless and have carried me well into adulthood. If more people had a Dr. Berger in their lives, there would be less anxiety and suicide. I think the blowback came because Ordinary People beat out Raging Bull for Best Picture. One was introspective and emotional; the other edgy and innovative. Redford and Scorsese, two totally different styles of filmmakers, do it’s hard to compare the two.

Tim MTM was never better in any of her projects.. she mastered the role of Beth. I always felt Beth was a victim as well as Conrad and Cal. I 1st saw this movie in the theatre when I was 17 years old and I still rank it as my favorite movie. All the performances are still superior... the line “ maybe this is how they sit around and talk at the hospital but we’re not at hospital now” is another line where she shows her need to blame Conrad for her despair.

The way she seemed to scorn her son, who was a good kid, but did something stupid like trying to commit suicide, you would think the mother, more, would be more sympathetic, but I was stunned by how it ended. I’m thinking, she’s gonna stop being the nasty bitch she was throughout the whole movie, and maybe breakdown crying over the other son, realizing she still has another son who obviously loves her and wants her acceptance, only for her to skip town the way she did. It was very interesting to see her in this. I’ve only known MTM from her tv show so to see her play a character that’s completely different than I’ve seen her play before was interesting. @@Soapandwater6 I was too. After seeing how nasty band horrendous as a wife and mother she was, I just didn’t expect that ending where I appreciated it at the same time because it’s not realistic when there’s this happily ever after in every movie. Due to my born again brother in law who hated me since day one, I severed ties with my mon and sister where if I didn’t know better it was as if he turned them into robots. They did something so horrendous to me where I had no choice but to believe that last summer I never thought I had these repressed memories that what they did to me was beyond evil . I chose to forgive them , but still always felt things werent right where I forgave them for what they did to me but will never see the person who I always was- kind hearted , would do anything for them etc., to the person I am today. Someone who forgot he was always a fighter no matter what life dealt me. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to turn this into what I finally realized I can’t do anymore. And that’s having them in my lives anymore. Saddens me deeply because I never got to say goodbye to my beloved niece. And want to tell her so bad, I will always be here for you no matter what. Whatever you need just know all you have to do is text or call me. One day maybe I’ll figure out a way because there’s this change in her as well. One in which my very angry brother in law may be the reason she looks sad but is afraid to tell anyone why. Anyway just needed to vent after seeing this response on my comment made so long ago. Charlie Duffy - sorry for responding to this so late. I wish I knew. I essentially ripped the audio from the beginning of the film and kind of "remixed it." But as for a version to purchase, I don't think so. Intrada released what should have been a definitive soundtrack score, but really...what I heard of that CD was very disappointing. Maybe the tracks on that release were the same raw tracks that we'd eventually hear in the film, but it sure didn't sound like that to me. The presentation was very underwhelming and seemed incomplete, as though it were padded with "unreleased, never before heard" tracks, while not actually showcasing the entirety of the music we all loved in the film as it was used in the film. Fingers crossed it all sees the light of day with a proper release.
