In just over a decade, all new cars sold in Oregon and Washington will be EVs - that's the plan at least.

There are 5.5 MILLION DRIVERS in Washington State...........100,000 Electric Vehicles is LESS THAN 2% no where near "MANY" like you commented. Oregon is a similar percentage. So we are going forward on FORCING 95% of drivers buy an electric car!?! Sounds like Oregon to me!

I am an auto mechanic. This law is wrong and I'm against it and it is a direct threat to a blue collar job that has provided for my family for decades but after thinking about it I realized that people just don't like being forced to do something. A mind convinced of something against it's will is still unconvinced. America's fleet of cars keeps getting older and older. People are already keeping there cars longer for reasons other than being forced to buy a new electric car. I predict that what I am very good at, keeping 'normal' cars on the road as long as is economically possible, is going to become very lucrative.

don't sweat it, you'll definitely have work for the rest of your lifetime. diesels aren't going anywhere and electric cars need maintenance too. cars didn't have all these new electronics in them a couple decades ago and mechanics had to adapt. how is this any different?
@JasonJones-br3or
@JasonJones-br3or 2 года назад
The problem with old cars is that they become prohibitively expensive to maintain, unless you work on them yourself. No one wants to fool with a mechanic all the time, anymore than they'd fool with a PC repair-tech... if it's warrantied, they send it off to Apple or whatever, if not, they trade-out or trade-up. Consequently, few folks deal with PC-repair techs. Parts for old cars are expensive. Aftermarket is usually crap, and folks don't bother doing business with cagey OEM legacy-parts dealers who think they're sitting on a gold mine. We've been to a mechanic once in the past 20 years, I swapped out the alternator on my Nissan pickup myself (watched some RU-vid videos); we replaced the oil-pan seal on the Toyota ourselves. Trade-secrets at the blue-collar level don't really exist anymore. An electrician will try to charge 750-1500 bucks to install a car-charger; if your breaker-box is the garage, it's pretty easy to do... watch some videos, cruise the forums... why fool with a electrician? Engine-transmission repair... forget it... just buy a used Toyota or Honda or something; you can finance a car more easily than the lump-sum repair-amounts on your 20-25% interest credit card. If it's a wreck, a bad one, the insurance company will just total it out... they don't like dealing with mechanics either. Like the other dude said, go diesel; but you're really going to have to earn your pay there, because it's hard-ass work.

Especially, duanedragon if your one of those greedy seedy mechanics that over charge a customer. Then it'll be really lucrative for you. OR if your one of the few truly honest mechanics, then you could end up with a ton of business also making it a lucrative business.

You are more than welcome to think what you want, but the reality is they are almost completely recyclable. Just like every plastic is recyclable but they aren't all profitable to recycle. The real question is if the batteries will be profitable to recycle or if raw materials are cheaper. Maybe the system that requires everything to be profitable isn't the best system for the environment or the overall wellbeing of humanity.
@cw4623
@cw4623 Год назад
@@skyisreallyhigh3333 Laughable. No, they are NOT almost completely recyclable. Though you can think what you like. And how is that even a counterpoint to the OP's post about piles of used batteries? Especially when you claim that due to profitability, they may not be recycled in practice. So... it wouldn't matter if they were 100% recyclable, would it? Just like plastic bottles and cardboard are completely recyclable. And we've clearly seen how that's gone-- NOT recycled, with only a small portion shipped to CHINA for recycling. Yours is a dream-world, friend.

Here's one of the ironies of California's LEV/ZEV policy: The last place you'd want to use an all-electric vehicle is... California. They have 'Grid Emergencies' every year, for half the year; you'd have to keep a gas-powered Honda generator handy to charge your car... which would take forever, and piss-off your neighbours. Encouraging... not mandating... LEVs--hybrids makes more sense at this point, on the west coast. As it stands now, the current commitment to EVs, well, that's the cart before the horse.
@jcchan08
@jcchan08 2 года назад
Before this happens there needs to be a better plan and understanding how Oregon and Washington Electric Utility Grids will handle this extra EV electrical load. A commitment by 2035 may not be realistic, but a slow rollout for a few more years after that may be a better idea to collect more data so we don't put a unnecessary strain on the utilities.
@farmergiles1065

This is stupid. You can't convert to EVs by passing a law. You have to have actual production of EVs. And batteries. And charging stations. And enough electric power. And a sufficiently upgraded electric power grid to deliver the power. - Just for starters. And people will not like it if you ban the only mode of transportation that works for them where they live and work. EVs cannot provide that. It will take more development work to get there, and there's no guarantee that it will be possible in 10 years. That's because the more you try to expand the capabilities of a technology, the harder it gets to find an economic solution. Politicians who think you can just go ahead and mandate whatever wishes they want to fulfill are living in a dream land. But in the meantime, they could cost a lot of people their livelihoods. Wouldn't be the first time.

I don't know about Oregon, but Washington didn't commit to electric cars. Some yayhoos in the government says some stupid thing does not make it true. In fact I don't see it happening at all.
@jimwjohnq.public

Like everyone has an extra $$$ just laying around to buy an EV. We have already seen that the grid can not, at least in California, hold up under any kind of stress. Add EV's to the mix and the grid crashes. Not to mention that the government will be able to shut down these EV's at will. And we also know that Oregon is a follower, never a leader. It was guaranteed that after California came out with this rediculous idea, Washington and Oregon jumped right on board.

Why don't you pass a bill to build more power infrastructure to support all these charging stations etc. Have you noticed California is having rolling brownouts where ppl can't even charge they're cars and get to work

I hate all these excuses. Did that woman on the zoom call really say. That poor communities and communities of color Would benefit. How is a poor community going to benefit. Did how much it cost to get an electric vehicle, and it's weird that they automatically assume poor communities with communities of color. I think electric vehicles are super cool. But let's be real world use of them is so limited and we're racing to go after it when we don't even know what their long-term viability is. Can't say they're greener knowing how much damage it does to the Earth and just to harvest the materials required to make the batteries. You're not making the environment cleaner, you're just moving the damage to somewhere else
