UPDATE: 2024: We know how to pronounce Shaniko. Thank you everyone...

I personally prefer to say it the way you did. I'm a born & raised Oregonian, and that's the only way I've ever said it too. I watched a KGW segment recently where they said it very differently, and in my usual fashion, I revolted and decided I'd only say it's name how I want to lol.

For anyone interested in staying in Shaniko now, the hotel is officially open for business. That is as of sept 2023. You should see it. It is done up well. When I was a kid in the 70s, it was open and the folks that worked it were.......special or challenged. It was so great to see that. Lots and lots of time and money being invested in Shaniko now. Well worth the trip in reasonable weather to check it out. In august a big festival goes on for I think 3 days with live music and all, called "Shaniko days".

Our family lived in Redmond when the dude from India took over Antelope, Oregon. The story's are definitely true. He was constantly in the news along with his partner in crime the woman. I can't pronounce or spell either one of their names. Pretty crazy watching it all unfold.

Next time you're exploring ghost towns in Oregon - check out Sumpter, if you haven't already! My brother and I did a ghost hunt in the old hospital, which is now an B&B. We got a lot of paranormal phenomenon there. Apparently, there have been ghost hunting shows filmed there. Pretty cool!

Thanks for the great video as someone who grew up in that part of Oregon i really appreciate you bringing this very special portion of the Beaver State to a much wider audience .my uncle was in Antelope at the time of the Rajneeshi occupation all though he wasn't involved with the occupation he worked a truck driver for a Industrial laundry service in Ontario because he spoke Urdu fluently authorities asked him to work as a translator for the Rajneeshi whom didn't speak English. Live currently in Klamath Falls, Oregon grew up between Bend and La Grande . Go Beavers and Ducks

Thank you so much!! That area is amazing with so much history. How cool about your uncle's experiences in Antelope. He was probably a very useful asset to the authorities during that time. We hope to explore more in Eastern Oregon soon.

Real ghost towns are plaves like Lamonta between Madras and Prineville, and Shevlin between Bend and La Pine. Perhaps Richmond, but there are people still there.

At the 1:45 mark, in the center of the screen at the end of Antelope, is a place referred to as the "Brogan place". It has a school house on it which is the one room all grades. Also, Antelope where you toured is actually a relocate. Ask the locals, yes, they are approachable, and they will show you where the town was originally. Sad you were not there in 2019. The cafe, once the Antelope cafe, then "zorba the buddah" during the accupation, was open again for a very short time as Grandma's cafe. Had brunch there in 2019. Grandma was the mayor. Also, as a child, I remember very well the garage still in operation in the 70s. They had a huge tug boat piston out front as a trash can.

Sad that when I think of Oregon (Portland...) I think dystopian or colloquially: #$@&hole. Important not to characterize the entire state by one city and the crazy Branch Davidian types there in the past.

Government should provide this town to be a public land and open spaces for all the home less to live here, plan their own gardens, plant all kinds of fruits for themselves to survive fix all the buildings for them to restart a new town, new life to live here then open a farmer market or ghost towns tours to make moneys.

2 minutes of intro for a 15 min. vid is a bit much. Everyone likes Shaniko, but it is pretty much the tourist trap of Ghost Towns. Kent is legitimately dead, and the next town up the road might be next. Soon.

Australia produced L18 000000 (pounds), $32 000000 in 1901. That equates to well over $1.5 Billion in today’s money. Even with converting that to USD, it is well over the figures you gave for this place,’the world largest wool producer’. You may be talking about the largest producer in the smallest area of land. So Australia produced 10 times the amounts this place did.
