Our only “social service” that would actually separate helpless people from their enabling environment are prisons and now these states are trying to get rid of those too 🤣🤣🤣 the intention was never to help anybody when they decriminalized. Somebody is making a lot of money off of the mass importation of high margin product into that state and others like it…

the war on drugs has cost tax payers over a trillion dollars, with drug use being at an all time high. As history shows prohibition does not work and allows criminal organizations to create thriving markets. The land of the free has the worlds largest prison, 2.3 billion dollars. Bigger than communist China's. Half of all inmates are in for non violent drug offenses. It costs tax payers roughly $65,000 per inmate per year to incarcerate them. Do the math on that. And after inmates get out they are felons who can't get a normal job ever again and often have to resort to crime for a living. Speaking of crime, have you ever seen thugs selling alcohol and tobacco on a street corner? Ever hear of a cartel smuggling alcohol or tobacco over the border? Absolutely not. Criminals cannot compete with a legal market. If drugs were legal, and regulated cartels and gangs wouldn't exist. Mexico would no longer be run by them, so they could rebuild their country and immigration would go down. Crime would also go down in the US since drugs are the main source of income for gangs. We could also tax legal drugs and use that money to get people into treatment. Colorado's made tons of weed to help build schools and roads. Also law enforcement would be much safer not needing to focus on the dangerous drug war. That allow them to focus on much more important issues. But keeping drugs illegal obviously hasn't worked and is not working. The US currently consumes over half of the world's illegal drugs. Something need to be rethought here. Legal drugs would also mean they would be much safer since they would be regulated which would save thousands of Americans lives. They would also be much cheaper and easier for an addict to obtain so they don't resort to crime in order to support their habit.

Oregon's approach to drug decriminalization is indeed a bold and pioneering move, marking a significant shift in how drug possession is treated legally and socially. Rather than viewing it strictly as a backfire or a work in progress, it's helpful to see this initiative as a complex and multifaceted experiment that challenges traditional methods of addressing drug use. This policy aims to shift the focus from criminal punishment to treatment and support, recognizing that substance use disorder should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal one. It's a progressive step towards destigmatizing drug addiction and emphasizing rehabilitation over incarceration. While there have been challenges and criticisms, especially regarding the implementation and the initial outcomes, it's important to remember that transformative changes often require time to adjust and yield measurable results. The effectiveness of such a significant policy shift can't be fully assessed in the short term. It involves continuously learning, adapting, and improving the support structures and interventions to meet the intended goals. Moreover, this experiment could provide valuable insights and lessons for other regions considering similar approaches, contributing to a broader understanding of effective strategies in combating drug addiction and its societal impacts. Positive change often comes from trying new solutions and learning from the outcomes, and Oregon's initiative is a noteworthy example of seeking innovative ways to address complex social issues.

Theft. Note the part where they talk about the rise in property crime. Shoplifting has skyrockted. Did you see the $$2,000 bike next to one dude's tent? Stolen. Also, Oregon has a bottle bill - $0.10 for every bottle/can returned. Zombies rolling around the city with big bags of cans, rummaging through people's recycle bins. 20 cans will get you a fentanyl pill.

Addiction sucks, we get it. However, programs like this do nothing but waste tax dollars with poor results. Clearly most addicts are not going to change if we put it on them to do it. We visted Seattle last year and were blown away at the amount of homeless and level of comfort people had with them hanging around popular areas. These programs are just giving the homeless a choice when they really need to be held accountable for their actions. I don't know the right answer but this is not it.

Of course it backfired because police instructions only do 80% of the work. To be effective in any matter, the cops should call the phone number and register the patient instead of giving them a choice because they are in no level mental state to make that choice so a healthier individual (the cop) has to make that choice for them. Plus the whole thing of having them call that number and giving them a “ticket” doesn’t make it feel like a positive thing being done.

When you decriminalize all drugs there will be an influx of use that will decrease long term. You can’t expect change short term. Really the US should decriminalize all drugs then highly regulate and allow sales of some of them. What do governments love more than war? MONEY. State governments will love all that money coming in, police will be able to focused on other things, and hopefully those taxed drugs will help fund more mental health and addiction treatment options.
@NuggetAlmighty
@NuggetAlmighty 2 месяца назад
Why do you think it wil decrease long term? The users now started when drugs where illegal and more difficult to get. Now its legal, so kids see more and it's easier to get. It's a big opportunity for starting drug users and thus fore more drug users long term.
