something i really like about orel is the fact that in the beginning of the show he was scared whenever clay calls him to his study, but in nesting hes completely unphased and indifferent

Kinda crazy how this show is darker than Bojack Horseman and still manages to have a more hopeful ending.
@xyliarcontreras
@xyliarcontreras Год назад
Agreed, but both shows definitely get their point across w their endings, I love them equally. Bojack was always supposed to showcase how life is relentless and being a good person is never black and white, it is cold distant and gray. Whereas Morel Orel imo shows how yes life IS relentless and being a good person isn’t black and white, especially when it comes to pretending you’re a good person under the guise of religion, but you absolutely can overcome and still live morally(lol) and happily despite the hardships life throws at you. (Sorry about the rant I just love both these shows 😅)

Really, Orel's story is inspiring. Despite coming from a loveless, abusive household, Orel never lost his faith. Really, the show is by no means "anti-religious" as you'd think. It instead takes jabs at people who hide their inner demons behind the front of their "piety."

I don't even think Clay is that religious
@gothicMCRgirl
@gothicMCRgirl Год назад
@@alchemistofsteel8099 He really isn’t honestly, most people of Moralton are not actually religious. Aside from holidays, they don’t really practice the things that they preach and they use the Bible as a “get out of consequences” card. Christianity is merely a tool that they use to control those around them, and the only real Christian in the show is Orel, who is genuinely kind to -everyone-, even the people deemed as outsiders, like Stephanie and Stopframe (who are both gay and live alternate lifestyles). A real Christian doesn’t judge, they accept and they show compassion.

Orel is one of the few characters with a happy ending in this show. He overcame his past, cut ties with his parents, and became an loving husband and father. He decided to stay in Moral Town so he can change it for the better, so no kid has to go what he went through ever again.
@limelantern5637
@limelantern5637 Год назад
I like how Orel's growth as a character can be tracked through how his relationship to Doughy gradually changes over the course of the series. In the beginning he's too oblivious and optimistic to realize that Doughy is unhappy and doesn't bat an eye at the implications of his home life, but in Abstinence (which would have been a season 3 episode focusing on Doughy) the makes the decision at the end to stay with Doughy and be nice to him to keep him out of trouble. He grows to recognize over the course of the series that traumatic events can change people for the worse and tries to stop that from happening to his friend.
@AliceOfSherwood
@AliceOfSherwood Год назад
I kind of want to believe that after Shapey said "when I'm thirsty, it feels how I feel when I'm alone" to Bloberta, she finally realised how her emotional neglect of her kids had damaged them. When she says "what?" in response, she's genuinely upset by what Shapey said and quite possibly struck with guilt. Given that the series was cut short, we were robbed of seeing Bloberta reform herself and become a better mother, but I'd like to think that she secretly became a better mother to Orel, Shapey and Block when Clay was out of the house because if he saw that she actually cared for something he was going to take it away from her.
@feonaarabellaparaiso1786
@feonaarabellaparaiso1786 Год назад
I believe that was the plan. She was supposed to have a romantic relationship with Officer Papermouth, and become a better person once she found genuine love and acceptance that she never had with Clay. I also assume Officer Papermouth was a pretty good dad because Shapey and Block become a police officer and a fireman when they grow up (as shown on Orel’s wall in the ending), probably trying to emulate the good father figure in their life.

As someone who's currently going through what Orel went through, he's just a massive inspiration and a glimmer of hope for me in the religious community I'm in. I started watching the show when my views on religion and religious people were really at its lowest, but the show, especially Orel, resonated with me and allowed me to pick myself up and learn the things that Orel did. I definitely can't agree more with everything in this video. Truly a one of a kind main character, thanks for making so many moral Orel videos dude!! I absolutely love discussion videos like these and your videos are certainly a go-to for me. His arc ,both in terms of what made it on screen and the planned stuff, kind of reminds me of Dean from Venture Bros (only Dean’s gothiness was semi-permanent in his case) in terms of going from an aw shucks kind of parody of naive kid protagonist to a surprisingly well rounded character. Also I’m in the camp that totally buys the popular fan theory that he’s on the autism spectrum

I've read a lot of comments on Morel Orel-related videos and people from backgrounds similar to his say that the depictions of the town's dynamics are spot-on. That is pretty chilling, knowing that kids across the country have to deal with parental figures like Orel's.

Regardless of being cut short by the network, I really appreciate that this show ends on a happy note. Especially that it ends with Orel staying true to himself. We know from the show that small town politics and small town churches often have systemic issues that cause people a lot of hurt, but we know with certainty that people like Orel will exist there to balance things out with a genuine will to do good. There's no cynicism in the ending deriding him for staying with his religion, or living out the lifestyle his parents tried to emulate, we're happy for him because we know its *not* an emulation, he *IS* the real picture of that healthy small town man just trying to do the right thing, and having seen him suffer for doing that in the past we know it's not something that comes easy.

I'm thinking Orel became both the pastor of his church and the mayor of Moralton, because that's the best way to change his hometown and undo the toxic things he heard from his dad. Even though it's out of historical order, he reminds me of Ted Lasso: a kind guy who's trying his best to be held accountable and grow, even when others aren't!

As a child i was really confused about this show. It was a fun joyous God loving show with a non intentional trouble making kid in comedy. As an adult you really see the reality of the this kid. These were one of the shows of the first decade that deserved a better fate. This wasn’t a show you just walk away from. This was a well developed story driven character that didn’t get the chance to see the light of day. This was Gold experience. The connection with Orel is the fact that you can relate to him in a lot of ways. Troublemaking yet fun loving kid but what’s really interesting is about a child who lives and yet doesn’t see the hell he’s living in until later and still keeps his peace of mind and breaks the cycle of abuse. A kid who got put through emotional trial and error and still made it out. That’s a story you can enjoy. He kept his love of life and faith in God.
