I just finished 4 semesters of Music Theory & SSET. While searching for piano skills, I've discovered the organ (much like Columbus but without all the rape, pillage & plunder). Your explanation on drawbars & the rotary is excellent. Now instead of just randomly pursuing the presets of other artists, I'm exploring my own sounds with a bit more purpose. Thanks!

A more mathematical or scientific explanation is that the 8' is the natural or fundamental frequency of the keys. 4' is the double frequency, 2 2/3 is (almost) 3 times, 2' is 4 times, 1 3/5' is 5 times, 1 1/3' is 6 times, and 1' is 8 times. 16' is ½ the fundamental frequency, and 5 1/3 is 1½. Hammond tried to make a drawbar in between 6 and 8 times - but it didn't really sound right because there is no musical interval that fits a 1 to 7 ratio like 1 to 3 or 1 to 5 which is 2 octaves + terts and 3 octaves + quint respectively.

The 7th harmonic is just naturally very flat when compared to the actual 7th on an equal temperament keyboard that’s why it isn’t used and doesn’t sound good if it’s overly present in a mix or tone.
@3bhui
@3bhui 3 года назад
Righteous. Multiplying a frequency by 7 is equivalent to shifting up two octaves plus something that doesn't closely match any semitones within the equally-tempered scale (12 semitones per scale) of Western music. 7 = 2*2*1.75 = octave + octave + 1.75 Multiplying the root note of a scale by 1.75 gives a note that is somewhere between 9 and 10 semitones above the root. For the scale of C, that would be somewhere between A (frequency of C times 1.68) and Bb (frequency of C times 1.78) but not close to either one.
@3bhui
@3bhui 3 года назад
in contrast, consider multiplying the frequency by a factor or 3 or 5. 3 = 2*1.5 = octave + 1.5 = octave + quint Multiplying the root by 1.5 corresponds to a note 7 semitones above the root. For the key of C, the frequency is very close to G (the frequency of C times 1.498). 5 = 2*2*1.25 = octave + octave + 1.25 = octave + octave + tert Multiplying the root by 5 corresponds to a note 4 semitones above the root. For the key of C, the frequency is very close to E (the frequency of C times 1.260).. Multiplying a note by 3 or 5 produces a frequency that is acceptable to what is accustomed to be heard for the equally-tempered scale, whereas multiplying by 7 produces a misfit frequency that is perceived as being dissonant relative to any of the 12 semitones.

Keyboard Skills Pro The H & X Series of Hammond Organs have 2 more Drawbars (Mixture Drawbars) the 10th is 1 1/7 & 8/9 together, & the 11th is 4/5 & 2/3 together. These additional Drawbars add some extra shimmer (along w/ those Pedal Switches on the Right) that I used for a very interesting cover of Octopus's Garden by the Beatles, & I also wrote a parody of that song about the Hazards of Improper Popcorn Storage.
@KeyboardSkillsPro
@KeyboardSkillsPro 3 года назад

I am learning drawbars but on the Ferrofish B4000+ with the same exact drawbars and I was noticing the fast speed of your leslie. It is much faster than I have mine set. So what is the take on how fast should the leslie spin. So I could take some of your settings and when you play I could set my fast setting to sound like yours. Instead of on an actual hammond there are at least two sets of 9 drawbars where on the ferrofish there is 1 set to be shared with upper and lower and if there is a midi bass pedal board, there are drawbar settings for that. When I have two keyboards hooked up My Korg M1 is on the lower register and the Roland midi only keyboard is on register upper. What I do is first set my lower to my desire then set upper to something different. Now if I go back to lower, my drawbar settings suddenly change to the upper. So I will sometimes leave one alone and do drawbar settings only on the other keyboard. It is certainly a learning experience.

Depth is Vibrato Depth - its the peak and trough of the vibrato wave.

Copy of Hammond and not good copy of Legendary HAMMOND sounds.

The video was to illustrate the basics of drawbars…yes all manufacturers emulate / sample this famous ‘sound’ so players who want more than just Hammond drawbars can enjoy this sound too. However I agree there is nothing like the sound of a tone wheel through a Leslie :)
@fish4bugs

Yes....but it isn't a Hammond....and you can hear the difference. There is nothing better than tone wheels.

@@KeyboardSkillsPro Oh....don't get me wrong. I am an admitted Hammond snob. Lugged a B3 around for years, now have an A105 w/ Leslie 251 in my office for fun now. The electronics have their place and for the most part sound pretty good. ....plus they are one heck of a lot LIGHTER! :)

That’s true - even hammond are now fully digital. Can’t beat a hammond talking by through Leslie! :)
