In this video I wanted to demonstrate how I do the "Smear" and "Rake". This is just the way I do it and I am sure there are other ways to perform this playing technique, but I hope my way helps you to accomplish your goal.

I think Ed what's also important when you, "smear and rake" is not to wearing a ring on your right hand because my ring while raking caught a key and ripped it right off the keyboard:O

their own follow-up, the 730, has made this technique even easier, but this is a great video, and there should be more of them, because I'm sure, there are plenty of keyboard players out there, like myself, who have never actually played a real B3....

Brilliant. Thank you. I've always been a bit of a piano/synth purist and not really a fan of organ sounds. But, I've recently seen a guy in a Fleetwood Mac tribute band using the organ sounds to great effect and noticed him doing these techniques..also, I'm working on Born To Be Wild for my band at the moment and have seen a few clips of organ players using this these also..so, it's been really helpful to check out how they should be done properly and even at this late stage in life, try something new, so thanks, once again! 😉👍

Hey Ed, I have a weighted keyboard with some organ sounds. Is this technique tough to learn on a heavy action? Am I more likely to mess up my key bed trying the smear and rake? Great video!

Hi Ed, this video is great! How about you tell me how you do the smear, do you do it on the black notes only? Because I normally rather play piano, but when I do that kind of thing the smear would be more on the black keys and the rake on the white keys? Thanks for the tips! Take care!

Hello, I think in this example I tend to lean on smearing the black notes, however, if I catch some of the white notes in the process it is ok. Ultimately use your ear and adjust as it sounds good to you. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Ed, don’t know if you read these comments. I just bought a Roland Vr 09B, It’s awesome. I can’t figure out how to get my sustain pedal to work. It seems to be the opposite of a sustain pedal. I got as far as menu, controller but don’t really understand the nomenclature. Need help. Thanks Al D

Hi, I’m trying to get better at answering questions, so yes, I am reading them. Congratulations on your new keyboard I think I have an easy way to help. Depending on your sustain pedal, it might have a polarity switch on it. If there is a switch on the sustain pedal, then flip the switch, and that will change the polarity on the pedal, let me know if this works out for you.

don't regret learning guitar. just add keyboard as well. The main advantage of 🎸 is portability and if you have acoustic you can take it anywhere and play anytime. No cables no nothing. Playing guitar and singing on the beach while looking at the sunset over the ocean with your significant other is something only guitar players can do!

Play both! I was a guitar player first. Then around 19 years I started playing organ. When I was 21 I was hauling a B3 and Leslie around and playing in some big places like Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Back then, mediocre guitarists were a dime a dozen, but B3 players always had gigs. So play both.

Question: When you are doing the smear, are you smearing both the black and white keys at the same time?

You can tell he is hitting both because of the Tritones.if it as just black or white they'd be a scale

That's the reason Roland and the rest Korg, Yamaha should invest in quality keys instead of those cheesy plastic feel that they been using lately.

Try to do the smear with a light touch and hopefully that will help you from hurting your hand. The smear should never be done with a heavy hand.

in southern black church music, you have to be pretty damn worked to: growl that low registration wipe. now that high Registration stuff is a snarl. they do sound rather like big furry cats sure Enough. in such settings if you don't have your shit displayed, you get a mere " you sound good" however musicians with chops don't need pats and hugs. we appreciate cold fees. checks will do if we know you. that guy is stuff. on those combi devices it takes a seasoned player to show their worth. thank you sir
