Lol pleased do you like the outtakes I was told by many people that I shouldn’t put it in, but I figured as I’m going to keep everything real why hide something that in actuality is pretty funny to watch. I’m actually surprised at how much Ziggy enjoys the filming and it’s an absolute classic to watch him watch me and him on the big screen TV when I put the videos on there. That’s great news re the bug buffet I’m sure you’re going to love it. Your fish certainly will. The flow life is an amazing invention and I love it and so do the bees. They just feed naturally here on all of the flowering trees and plants around, this farm and the surrounding neighborhoods. The honey is amazing and I’ve had a lot of people tell me it’s the best honey they’ve ever tried. I am biased though too lol. 🙏❤️🇦🇺🦘🐶

I wonder if a small bio barrel could be made for a patio pond, using a solar pump? Not sure it would be strong enough but might be fun to try! Thanks for the explanation!!
@AdriansFishroom
@AdriansFishroom 8 месяцев назад
Absolutely it’s very scalable upsized and down, and I only have a 20 lit barrel for my blue medaka pond. The issue that I found with the solar pumps is that of course they won’t run overnight and you will need to have them attached to a battery system, but if the pump is small enough, a car battery will do just fine. It could then be completely standalone and off grid. if the water flow stops every night, the bacteria will die off within the barrel, almost the same, but not as bad as a canister filter. Good luck with it. You should definitely have a go and please send me the pictures. I’m on Instagram.❤️🙏🇦🇺🦘🐶

I build these a lot smaller, at 20 liters. But I have a mechanical sponge filter on the pump inlet so that I do not need to go in a clean them.
@AdriansFishroom
@AdriansFishroom 8 месяцев назад
Yep, that’s very cool. I do have a couple with pre-filter, sponges over the pumps as well and it definitely helps cut down the cleaning. I would note though, however that if you stop too much of the food and waste getting into the bio filter that it main staff of the bacteria in there, so I usually use a relatively course sponge to try and avoid this happening. As always, it’s a very fine balance.🙏❤️🇦🇺🐶🦘

Very good explanation of how your bio barrels work especially for taking the time to draw all the small stones :D First time I see such a tech bee hive. Does it require ANY maintenance? Never kept carpet pythons, lovely specimens. Filming while trying to handle snakes was a big NO for me as majority of sp. i have kept were not constrictors:P Those red bellies black elapids...wow! I do feel for you putting up with the wildlife knocking at your door but, on the other hand, it keeps you vigilant and alive. Congrats for the sparkling babies and looking forward next Sunday night show from Down Under - all the best !
@AdriansFishroom
@AdriansFishroom 8 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for the awesome message. And yeah, I wondered if I should speed up the small stone section lol. The flow hive requires almost no maintenance, other than harvesting honey, and keeping the caps full of water other than that your usual hive inspections once or twice a year. It is extremely easy to extract the honey from though.❤️🙏🐶🇦🇺🦘

I would try for a definite pair mate or alternatively get a group of babies about 5 say and let them pair up naturally then remove the pair to another tank, have some forces (appropriate for their size) and some plants for fry protection, feed them really well (bbs) so that they know there is food for their babies and keep the water clean and they will do the rest them selves.❤️🦘🇦🇺🐶

G'day Adrian, another amazing video! Anyone watching your videos would think you've been at it for years, they are soooooo good. I found your demonstration/explaination of your bio barrel system fascinating. I was wondering whether the system is scalable to take in the whole fish room? Could you have a virtually closed fish room recycled water system, only topping up to cover spills, evaporation etc.? A couple of questions to ask Nick when you interview KFS: now that he has moved away from being a wholesale fish supplier to shops, what are his future business plans? Will he be doing more trips with Jason etc to explore the creeks etc in Queensland? PS: There is nothing worse than a dog's fart! I remember visiting my brother in the NT, we were in his WD driving along a dirt road, the air vents and windows were closed to keep the red dust out, his dog was on the back seat when it dropped one, it was horrendous and I will swear until my dying breath that the dog sat there and smirked!

lol yeah agree ! He knows !! lol and thanks so much for the cool message and the questions for Nick. As far as the bio barrel is concerned, yes absolutely it is scalable and in fact, I am thinking of putting an IBC size one to run the 8 foot tank side of the fishroom. The only question is how I keep it warm as I would have to locate it outside and I’m currently working through insulation options.❤️🙏

This is so awesome! Really love these type of videos. I live in Florida near springs so this really made a lot of sense to me. I wonder if I could build one on a smaller scale under my tank almost like a canister filter? Just don’t know how I would pump the water back up to the tank? And yes you should do high flow plants!

Hey mate thanks so much for your continued support and yes for sure I would definitely get one for your dad‘s farm. They are an amazing invention and make beekeeping incredibly easy. I would suggest looking at a local apiary club near your dad‘s location and you should be able to buy a queen and some workers for somewhere between $100-$150. Good luck and let me know how it goes.🙏❤️🐶🇦🇺🦘

I recently read Diana Walstad's "The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium". She reckons that plants much prefer to absorb nitrogen as ammonia or ammonium rather than as nitrates: it is more efficient for them. She therefore reckons that biological filtration (ie. nitrifying filtration - converting ammonia to nitrates) competes with the plants for ammonia. As a result, she eschews biological filtration in favour of extensive planting of the tank, and a soil substrate. There seems to be very little discussion of the relative merits of these two methods of dealing with the nitrogen-load of the tank. Might this subject make an interesting future AB video??
@AdriansFishroom
@AdriansFishroom 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, wow that is very interesting indeed. As you can see with my goldfish pond, I have both an extremely heavily planted tank and biological filter and the water seems perfect in that instance. I would love to dig some more into this, so yes I may look to try and include some of it into a video soon. Thanks so much for the information and your support.🙏❤️🇦🇺🐶🦘

Vloggers/writers seem to either advocate 1 approach or the other (nitrification/de-nitrification), without really explaining why. It seems easy to assume that the 2 approaches are mutually exclusive, with nitrification requiring aerobic conditions and denitrification requiring anaerobic/anoxic conditions. Vloggers often seem to state or imply that the roots of aquatic plants need anoxic conditions, and that they prefer nitrates (to ammonia). In fact, according to Diana and her sources (she cites the scientific literature extensively) aquatic plants tolerate anoxic substrate (they inject oxygen into it [into the "rhizosphere"] to make it more palatable). By so doing, they create a very localized gradient (around their roots), from anoxic to aerobic, in which a variety of diverse chemical reactions can occur. My guess is that the best approach (for the aquarist) is to help the plants to do just that - create diverse conditions within the substrate so that the tank can benefit from the best of both worlds (nitrifying and de-nitrifying). Actually, that is perhaps precisely what ecologically/minded aquarists are already doing? [your goldfish pond a case in point]. However, I suspect that in many cases they are doing it without an awareness of all of the intricacies at play. Certainly, I myself have been puzzling over the seemingly inconsistent information that I have been coming across, before arriving at the "resolution" (if that's what it is) as outlined above. I'm sorry that this was such a long and dense message Adrian, and perhaps telling you stuff that you already know. But my impression is that, generally speaking, there is quite a lot of confusion around upon these matters which, I for one, find very interesting? The microscopic dimension of fish tanks draws one in, does it not? I'm Gordon by the way, from the UK - another of those "whingeing poms", as Dame Edna would have said! @@AdriansFishroom

@AdriansFishroom 7 месяцев назад
Gday Gordon, Mate thanks so much for your message, and no issue with the length, or the denseness…. Or you being a pom Lol you have raised some interesting points, and I would agree with Diana’s assessment of the roots, creating little micro pockets to maximize their ability in different conditions, to create the perfect environment for them to thrive. That’s natures MO really. I think this is evident to anyone who has ever pulled a plant out of a substrate where it has been for a decent amount of time and seen all of the gases escape, which I’m sure would include oxygen. it’s also worthy of noting that the plants in the pots within the ponds that I have almost without exception, extend out roots into the water column (deliberately) outside of the pots and flourish in that state in exactly the same water. Oh and the Dame Edna reference definitely gives me an age range !! lol ah the good old days… possum .🙏❤️🦘🐶🇦🇺

Hello Adrian I didn't know about plants in the substrate also sending roots into the water column - you definitely have the edge over me in terms of experience, to the point where I am feeling like a bit of a fraud, and the need to confess that I haven't actually kept an aquarium since the 1970's! That aside, my participation so far is limited to reading, and watching videos, although I hope to rectify that situation soon. Diana (Walstad) goes on (in her book) to mention that many "aquatic" plants might better be described as being "amphibious), with 2 different (potential) growth forms - the oft-mentioned emergent and submerged - according to whether or not they are currently underwater. Many of these "amphibious" plants are adaptable to the point where they can grow from pond/stream bed up to the water's surface, producing aquatic leaves as they go, but they are also capable of then emerging above the surface, and producing their "land leaves" from that point upwards. This means that those land leaves have access to more plentiful supplies of (atmospheric) oxygen and carbon dioxide, which gives them a considerable competitive advantage over the algaes that might be growing in the water column. The houseplants which aquarists encourage to root into the aquarium water column are better than the aquatics at removing nitrogen from the water for presumably the same reason - that their metabolism can proceed more vigorously because of the relatively unlimited supplies of oxygen and carbon dioxide that their foliage has access to. But, to return for a moment to the aquatics planted in the tank bottom/substrate, if they have emerged foliage above the water level, not only can they grow quickly, but they are also able to inject more oxygen into the substrate around their roots, and maybe its true to say that these two capabilities make the emerged growth of these "aquatics" (or "amphibious plants") especially useful to the tank's ecology? I'm looking forward to watching the new video Adrian, I haven't seen it yet. Say hi to Ziggy for me! BW Gordon
