thank you for simplifying this so much! class starts tomorrow and our first quiz is already on the second day of class, I'm super nervous. it's been a couple months since I've taken gen chem but I was out here still counting up valence electrons when you've made it so much easier by just knowing how many bonds each atoms tends to form. thank you, thank you, thank you!

Some AP chem books ask student to add up all valence electrons first, then distribute them to make bonds and octets. Extra electrons go to double and triple bonds. Lone pairs are a result of that method. Your approach is simpler but requires more rule-learning. Oxygen has two lone pairs, forms 2 bonds.

I don't think the negative charge on O in CH3O- is because of electronegativity (partial negative charge), but because of formal charge, which indicates how many electrons are on the atom, not the atom's electronegativity. For example, in NH4+, Nitrogen is electronegative but N has a positive charge because of its formal charge.

The last bits got me. 'Take away the hydrogen. The oxygen now has 3 lone pairs instead of two, so it will have a negative charge.' For one thing, we haven't taken away the hydrogen, we have taken away a proton, or hydrogen ion. Can you take away a hydrogen? the bit about eletronegativity suggests you cannot. Secondly, isn't it strictly the fact that it has three lone pairs AND a bond the signifier of a negative charge? But while this is the signifier, it is not the reason. The reason is that we tool away a proton, not a hydrogen atom. Why is it easier to do it this way? Isn't it easier to try to draw CH3-O and realise that we are left with a 'lone electron' and that this the logical place to add the additional one required to make a negative ion (so making a lone pair).
