When soldering bezels, heat the piece from below otherwise the solder will climb up the bezel instead of the plate. I only use silver solder on copper

Thank you so much for the tutorial - so informative! Quick question, do you ever use a tripod stand with mesh vs the brick and if so, are the results different? Also, does the patina lose color over time such as plated jewelry?
@LauraBethLove

You may need to polish it over time

Thank you for the great tutorial! If this is used as a pendant that sits on the skin, do you coat the backing with something to prevent skin discoloration? Also can you pour resin in side the bezel once it's finished?

Hi Laura Beth! I’m having an awful time getting good results with the copper patina! May I ask what solder you use to achieve a bright shiny effect? I’ve tried 2 different solders both with no or low silver content & I’m wondering if the silver content is the main factor I’m missing? I did note that you were using silver solder with a torch in this video but have you used the copper patina in soft soldering techniques? Thanks for your help!
@LauraBethLove
@LauraBethLove 2 года назад
Hi Karen! To answer your question, this IS a soft soldering technique and I am using regular lead-free soft solder - the torch has nothing to do with it being hard or soft soldering. Soft just means I am using metal with a lower melting point. You could do this project with a soldering iron instead of the butane torch but it just would be more difficult and take longer. Copper patina can be tricky to work with. I am using regular lead-free solder (I don't recall the exact brand I used that day but check in my video descriptions for my most recommended brands, I usually have links to Silvergleem) Copper patina takes a lot of of "scrubbing" (elbow grease) to get a good finish and to get rid of the dark spots and the finish is never perfect as you can see in my project! You might also need to try a different brand of patina. There are a lot of different variables/learning curve to the process and sometimes it takes a bit of trying different things. Good luck!

I am just getting into soldering.. I'm adding to my cart to make an order.. I mostly use copper.. I see there is copper colored solder available...what are the pros and cons of using copper solder vs silver solder for projects like yours?
@LauraBethLove
@LauraBethLove 2 года назад
Well, first off, what temperature does it melt at? You need to examine all these aspects to know whether you can even use that with a soldering iron/what type of torch. So you would have to find that out and/or experiment and see how it works. It's not just the color that is different, it's the metal, and each melts at different temperatures, etc. I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but it's because you have to first know those technical things/differences. Let us know what you find!

Why do we need a solder gun and butane torch ? I have a solder gun my step father had in his workshop but doesn’t know how to use it. Also what is the solder - are they pieces of metal ? where do I buy that ? And also for the patina can you use alcohol ink? Thank you so much I adore your work I’m a mixed media artist mostly boho jewelry bc there’s so much you can do handmade (gems, glass, resin, poly clay, leather, sari silk, wiring, stamping hammering red copper and more . ) I’m looking forward to making my own gemstone buttons (bc they are so expensive to buy ) I’ve had no clue how to begin and you’ve helped me - thank you ! I have had to teach myself everything it’s not easy.

Well then you're definitely doing something wrong! Sounds like too much heat or the wrong type of solder. Lead free soft solder melts at a low temperature.
