I'm going to try the batch cutting mainly to avoid second guessing pattern choices. Once it's cut, there's no going back.

I “catalog” my pattern collection on Pinterest. A board for each designer that contains images/examples of the completed garments and then sections with line drawings sorted by garment type. The line drawings help me most for hacking or “sewing the style”. I love the filing cabinet idea for the physical patterns!

I approach my sewing process differently. I like to go from A to Z one project at a time. It helps me stay focused. Batch cutting wouldn’t work for me. Perhaps part of it has to do with the fact that I don’t have a great cutting table and if I need to cut a dress or pants, I have to put my two cutting mats side by side on the floor and cut there. Love that we can always change our process as we change or our circumstances change.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
This is a great point! I didn't used to batch cut, I would just do projects all the way through and that worked for me then. This is what works now and I'm sure that will change as well.

I love the top you are wearing!!! The best tip I got was to put each project into its own container, why have I never thought of that in all my decades of sewing. I used to batch cut and do marathon sewing sessions in my younger days and it was so fun. Think I am going to do that again. My biggest sewing roadblock right now is fitting and making wearable toiles. I am tall and have to lengthen arms, legs, crotch depth and also have a small bust and hourglass figure so there are many tweaks. I have a love for new patterns so I have to do all the adjustments every time. Guess I need more T&T patterns with pattern hacks. I so need to organize my patterns and fabric. I have moved it too many times and it is in chaos, I can never find what I want. A couple days ago I was going through some of my bins and realized I have a lot I no longer love so am looking forward to the Destashify video as it is time to send it off to new homes and get some stuff I want with that cash.

Thanks for sharing your process. I LOVE batch cutting because I cut in a “public” area of my home, so I get it all done in a fairly short amount of time, which decreases the grumbling from inconvenienced members of the family 😂. I also include a weight notation on all of my altered and self-drafted patterns (in code only I can crack) so I can tell at a glance if the pattern will work, or if I need to start from basics.

Today, though, I was inspired to go through my patterns and get rid of those I don't intend to make again or that don't fit me anymore. That bit of advice from you was quite welcome! Thanks Whitney. Always a favourite topic. I keep my paper patterns in a similar way. However, last year I started loading patterns and my fabric stash into Trello. I found this is fabulous and so inspiring. It has taken a while to upload initially but not hard to add new fabrics or patterns as they come in. And easy to browse and search. I have just tucked a bin of heavier fabric under a bed so with Trello I know what is there and where fabrics are located. I also put the leftover pieces that are large enough for binding or underwear or such projects in one bin. I then purge that once a year. I have not Marie Kondo'd mine but am now inspired to do that.

I’m not sure how I came upon doing batch cutting, but for me it’s a game changer. Cutting out is my least favorite part of the sewing process, and I find if I can get that done, I can move along to the fun part, actual sewing. So spending a whole day cutting out several garments is very productive for me. I put my separate sewing projects in jumbo ziplock storage bags, fabric, pattern, instructions and with all the notions I need for that garment. I can quickly see the project through the bag, the bags are the perfect size, relatively cheap, reusable, available in local stores and the ziplock keeps everything clean and protected. I have all my fabrics in plastic bins from target arranged by fabric type- knits and woven, and solid vs print. I store my fabric bins in our unfinished basement. I have a very similar system for all my patterns but for my big 4, I have them once again in those bins. I print off my pdf patterns as I use them and have those arranged by indie company in larger envelopes in bins too. I really appreciate this video, organization is key to being thrifty when sewing!

I love your organization systems. They are very similar to my own, but I got some GREAT tips on how to make mine even better, particularly making my fabrics more accessible. My quite large fabric stash is about to get a major reorg, because the categories I used to batch fabrics together is no longer serving me. It’s going to be a huge undertaking, but I’m really looking forward to it. In that process, I’ll get to see everything I’ve got, which usually sparks creative juices. I also liked that you admitted to not being perfect, but being well organized is not the same as being perfectly tidy. Knowing that everything has a home, and having a system that makes everything easily accessible and easy to put away are the things that make you organized. Creative endeavors are frequently messy. It’s just part of the process of being a maker of things. Thank you for another great video. Such fun! 🥰

I store my PDF patterns on my iPad as a collection in Books. Then it is like using a catalogue wherever I happen to be, and really enjoy being able to look at them , read the instructions, visualize…you all know what I mean. I also use the instructions from there, I don’t print those. I have my projector patterns on a dedicated older laptop set beside my cutting table. More current paper patterns are in a plastic tower of drawers. In Canada we don’t get $.99 pattern sales so I really haven’t bought paper patterns since discovering what I refer to as my Favourite Four. Love Notions, Itch to Stitch, Sinclair and Ellie and Mac. Jalie is a favourite as well and they are both paper and digital. Fabric is in Rubbermaid totes with labels. I am also in a basement sewing room.

I do a similar organization technique to your pattern storage, however when I download a PDF file to go into my computer folder I print out the front page and put it in my notebook also. This way I don't have to go to the computer folder to see what I have, it is right there with the rest of my patterns in the 'dresses' binder. I also batch cut a lot. It helps when I sew for my grandkids. Sewing size 12 for 3 of them, and size 7 for 3 of them, as well as 3 other sizes and use cafeteria style trays to organize each garment-to-be like the 7 Love Notion's Tempo Sundress.

Most of the time with a lid. And identify too with buying dupes of the Big 4. I figure I must really want to make it, rubber band them together, and try to give it more prominence in my piling system. Thanks, Whitney! Was interesting to see how organization could look. A pseudo alteration suggestion: adding pockets (or making those ridiculous tiny pockets big enough to be used...perhaps in conjunction with thrifting. Bin suggestion: Some bins are slightly wider than others. Put the materials in ziplock bags and put two or three bags in the bucket that will use the same thread.. if you sew in an area where there are other people who might knock over your bin, the ziplock bags are a lifesaver. Also throw a magnet in the bin (I use my kids old building toys or giveaway refrigerator magnets. You will need the pins and needles anyway and that way they stick close.

Love those colors in the top your wearing and it looks so good on you. It usually takes me a couple of days to batch cut 4-5 things because I’m in & out. It does help though because like you said you can go in for just a few minutes or longer periods of time & get so much done. I’m waiting on some fabric now and I’ll be doing some batch cutting to take on our semi-annual trip to Fla. All that with the sewing accessories will be going into ziplock bags & packed for the trip. I never thought of ironing the facings on here that will really help save time. I just have a little fabric that I keep in a couple of nice size drawers. I fold my fabric in half lengthwise and then I use one of my wide & long quilt type of rulers and place it at the top of fabric and just keep rolling it down & turning fabric with it . When my fabric is all folded up I slip the quilting ruler out and put some clips to keep fabric from unfolding. If I don’t have clips I use big long Bobby pins. I can fold over fabric if needed. Just finished a shacket from the Aria Love notion pattern, using some flannel I had in my stash ans using leftover from a dress to do the trim , cuffs, yoke etc. so going though making use of leftovers with my new sews . Working on my fall/winter capsule even though it hasnt dropped yet. I did buy it ,so looking forward t o that .

I use Trello. It’s really helpful when I want inspiration on what to sew. I created 2 categories (boards): Pattern Catalog and Fabric Stash. I have my patterns listed by company. I scan in a copy of the pattern envelope front and back. My fabric is also categorized as knit or woven with other info on how much yardage I have. When I’m at the fabric store, I can find a pattern and how much yardage I need without needing to bring the actual pattern. It took a long time to categorize my patterns and fabric but it was well worth the effort.

I use my late parents bedroom set dressers as my containers for my fabric the same way you use your Elfa drawers. My next house will be senior housing--maybe 10+ years from now--but as I sew while downsizing I love having those dressers repuposed. Before, I used stackable under the bed bins (giant shoe boxes). That worked when I sewed in the same space where the trundle bed for my parents when they visited. But as they passed and my 3 children left home, that system was way too easy to expand. I hope this helps someone else.🤟

I have endeavored to have a seasonal capsule for about 5 years. I have found that I have more solid colors now and embrace textures more. This allows the pieces to be more interchangeable . Can you speak to this? In other words, Do you find the same thing occurring?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
I definitely do! I find that if I stick to a 80% solid/20% prints in my wardrobe that it's more wearable for me. I can easily get sucked into the pretty prints, but if I can switch to more texture and less print, it fits into the closet better!

How do you plan for the matching notions for each project - like matching thread, size needles, buttons, interfacing, tape, etc?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 7 месяцев назад
I actually keep quite a stock of my most common notions so I always have them on hand. As far as thread, because I sew in a color palette, I almost always have the thread I need. I actually purchased the Gutermann thread color card from Wawak and I use that to match to projects and then order my thread directly from Wawak online. It's quite a bit cheaper than buying thread locally!

Hi Whitney-great ideas! 🥰 What do you do with the scraps of left-over fabric once you have cut out the pattern? I know you mentioned making bias biding. If I can’t do that I still have fabric that in no way would be enough for anything but more than just a few scraps

Love all your videos. I have a question for your alterations/mending video. I am working on Cashmerette patterns and belong to the club. I made the Kineton dress from some really special rayon challis printed in Spain. I thought it turned out perfect until I wore it. I asked for help on the choosing pattern size and was recommended to use the 16 E/F for the top. it is too tight (just a little across the top of the bust that makes the armhole to snug in the front. Can this be fixed? I also need to fix the elastic in the wrists is too tight/easy fix. (I used the chart in the pattern for the length of elastic). I also didn't do a good job with the easing of the sleeve cap on one shoulder that makes me crazy but probably others wouldn't notice. I wonder if I should just make a new one -maybe an 18 E/F, do a better job on installing the sleeves and longer elastic for the wrist and then go back to this one. What would you do?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
The tightness in the bust might be a bit hard to alter. You could let out a little bit of the center front and center back seam and see if that gives you more room there. What are your upper and full bust measurements?

When you mentioned ironing your patterns out, is that the actual pattern pieces? Or the fabric? If it’s the pieces is there anything you do special to keep the paper from burning, crinkling up etc? It makes sense to start with flat pieces, I just haven’t heard about ironing pattern pieces before.

Just make sure you use the matte tape and not the shiny tape. The shiny tape will distort with the iron.

How do you smooth patterns that have taped alterations. Mine always melts & distorts the pattern even when pressing from the non-taped side with an organza pressing cloth. Just wondering if there is a tip for that.

I have found that the green Scotch Tape (that is matte and not shiny) doesn't distort with the iron. The cellophane tape (the shiny) does distort.

@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery Год назад
If they are in plastic bins (and have no holes or cracks) you would be fine with bugs. I would worry about moisture possibly. You could vacuum seal the yardage and then put into bins. That would keep it safe from moisture and bugs!
