Just be sure to buy some extra containers to replace the ones that break or wear in the future. Always seems like I build something using a product as a base part and the company stops making that item 6 months later...
@SenselessUsername
@SenselessUsername 4 года назад
Or go with a 'too big to fail' company?.... e.g. IKEA has been making Expedit bookcases since decades, they stopped the line & replaced with Kallax --- which has the same size cubby holes. So all kinds of drawers/inserts for it since decades, and decades to come (even some competitors sell fitting stuff).

Absolutely right you can never have enough hardware storage.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 5 лет назад
Something I found too is if you build it to what you currently have and later on decide to expand, chances are whatever storage bins you used before will no longer be available so whatever you end up doing won't match what you already have and you may have to tear out what you have and start over...so yes, plan for much more than you need, and buy extra bins.
@TomOrman
@TomOrman 5 лет назад
@@wildbill23c Sounds like the correct plan... However, just buying the empty storage boxes for this project (152 i.e. 19x8) would set you back almost $260! Quite a bit of change for a wall of empty boxes, and being plastic, they may not last for very long.
@wildbill23c

I love this storage solution. A fantastic use of space, and about the best way I've seen for making all those various nuts, bolts, hinges, fittings, etc., etc., accessible and easy to find. Also, being able to pull out a container, use what I need and put it back easily makes it much more likely I will actually put them away when I'm done. Great idea, and thanks.

Great Job April!!! I have done something similar; at most lumber companies or big box stores they have a product for wire hanging displays and come in 4X8 sheets. Grooves are already in place and the grooves are 1/2" wide and deep. Perfect for plastic totes. Just a thought for those who are without dado heads or routers. Nice video!

Flip-Flop April This is time and labor intensive way, not mention the dust with making dado !! Specially if you are going to make quite few of them . You could use 1/4 inch 4x8 Plywood as base or any thickness you want, sticking 1/2 inch stripped spacer the width you like then cut the final 4x8 to the final depth of the shelf you want .

Brillant! This is one of the most usefull projects I've seen you undertake. Plus, if folks don't have a table saw with a dado stack or a router to cut dadoes, one just has to fasten equally spaced blocks cut from wood stock. One's local home improvement center will cut larger sheets of plywood down if you ask nicely. Then, you just need a circular saw and screws to put everything together. Thanks again for another great project!

I use the same type of containers for my LEGO collection in a variety of sizes and I have been planning a shelving system JUST like this one for when I get a house and have a room to dedicate to LEGO. Awesome project, I just found you and I'm really happy I did. And truer words were never spoken: "Whenever you're building storage solutions if you build it to your current inventory it's already too small. If you're gonna go through the effort of a project, go ahead and build in some extra room for growth." Thanks!

Interesting! I built a similar system using cardboard boxes without shelves, simply holding the box above the one I want while I get it out. My inventory (lots of electronic components) is mostly lighter than the fixings you have, but otherwise works similarly. I hot glue a length of white corrugated paper on the outside & mark with a sharpie allowing easy change. This has been a great blessing for finding stuff & the cardboard being opaque to light keeps everything free from fading. Thanks for sharing!

@@AprilWilkerson like a barn door kind of thing? Except unless the barn. Door is opening up in front of a opening (which yours probably could) you're losing the space on the wall that the barn door will open on.
