Best seat in the house as we watch the legendary Death Metal prodigy melt an ocean of faces with his equally ridiculous band. Shot by me with my iPhone 7 plus. Summer Slaughter tour 2017 at The Grove in Anaheim, CA.
I quite enjoy the part when he repeatedly and relentlessly hits the bass drum using his double bass pedal with great speed (if you want to rephrase this further feel free to do so)
John longstreth is one of the best technical death metal drummers on the planet.. hands down.. he makes it look so fucking easy it's ridiculous.. so smooth, and flawless.. amazing stuff man.. killer video.. thanks for sharing..
he is also a super nice and down to earth dude. the drummer of my band couldn't make it to their concert a few years ago, because he had an accident and broke his wrists. after the concert I was talking to john and he even recorded a short video to send it to my drummer, wishing him the best and to get well soon. just a super nice dude!
Mr. Longstreth is a God in his own ways and the extreme / avant community. In the drumtalk vid of him he showcases briefly his playing chops and hand control on a practice pad. His machine precision like playing style and constant snare hits that tie together remind me of a very seasoned marching band snare drummer /m/
My first instinct is "this isn't drumming its a ultra-fast conveor belt of percussive taps" but then I remember how disappointing it would be if Origin used a drum machine. This is obviously impressive.
I miss hanging out with these guys, john is a great friend of mine. we played a lot of shows in the Albany area. long live Origin and The Terrestrial Sphere days!!
@@behindthen0thing525 acoustic is a common noun. It refers to the audible property of a certain room. When you say a room has good acoustics it usually means the sound in the room mixes well. Good presence.
Anyone else remember the campaign he ran about 7 years ago for an instructional DVD? I donated like 60$ for a dvd and shirt and he never made it! What a jerk
I also remember getting ripped off about $60 on that Indigogo campaign. I won't say anything negative about the dudes playing as clearly he can shred, but his character and reputation is another. Metal drummers from around the world lost about $13,000 and we are not the richest people ever. Also, when you think of the extreme metal fan base, I tend to believe there are a lot less fans of bands he plays in.
From what I remember he got screwed over during the editing and wasn't happy with the quality so it never got released. Shame as i'd have loved to see a copy
beyondbetrayal I have no idea why. Just letting you know what I seem to remember happening. An official statement would have helped to clarify what happened i agree
Of all things to notice in this amazing video of drumming talent you point out the most moronic immature shallow thing that means absolutely nothing. Great job idiot. Go back to watching Keeping up with the Kardashians.
I’m 40 and have been playing drums since I was 7. I can match Johns speed but I can’t hold it for as long as he does. His heel toe Double Bass Technique is flawless!
I couldn't help but notice that Jason Keyser is one of the most eloquent death metal shouters out there. He tries to hide it with a few "f*cking"s thrown in here and there, but to no avail ...
Very confused, when he's controlling the hi hats with his left foot and left kick pedal is moving at same time, is he stepping on both pedals at once? Obviously when he plays left double kick only the hi hats do not move, so I assume they're not connected.
The Erratic Drummer, John was using heel blocks from ACD Unlimited for his Axis because his pedals had backlash. Now he's endorsing ACD Unlimited. Top notch pedals!
I agree... I’ve seen them live 7 times from 2001-2016 and John is damn near flawless. His double bass strokes don’t break up out of time like I’ve heard soooooooo many other drummers do. I’m not saying he never makes mistakes but he doesn’t make many. Plus they play these songs faster live than on the album!! It’s an amazing sight to behold and hear live!
Hey, so I know I hear what sounds like double bass but way faster than what he’s playing, is there another trick or someing digital added, surely you guys know what I mean
Ronson-san what are double strokes though, his feet look like they are doing normal double bass like a Metallica song or something but the double bass sounds twice as fast.
Just hitting a note does not make you great. Sometimes it is how you hit the note and you learn the blast beat. And we can do this quicker and harder John.
Wtf are you talking about? If your trying to say John isn’t a great drummer then you are a complete and utter imbecile. If your not saying that then please word your comments better where it’s easier to comprehend.
Jesus. H. Fucking. Christ. Yes, John's technique is insane - talk about studying rudiments and stick control. Of course, his footwork is impressive, but for me, his hands are unbeatable. Above all, is his feel. He constantly adds little things that add up to groove at insane tempos. Not to mention one-foot blasts. Fuck me.
Geworfen Heit I saw them on the 16th and got him to toss me one of his sticks! Believe it or not but he uses the front of his foot while he blasts. The hats are so tight that you only hear the "chick" when he hits them, but he's constantly using the hi-hat pedal when he does for a few seconds before he actuates them. He blew my mind their entire band did. I've seen over a 100 different bands and them and Fetus are always my favorites. Also, he actually has his hi-hat pedal to the right of his left foot board instead of on the left like most guys (he has one of those fancy hi-hat stand that you can extend the pedal like two feet and place it wherever). It makes his technique easier. To clear it up since it's on the right side all he has to do is move half of his left foot into the hi-hat so he can use both. It was fucking incredible to watch live. They stopped in Oregon with a few of the other bands and did a show outside of Summer Slaughter. Tiny venue so I was literally less than ten feet away from John, and right in front of the rest. It's why he tossed me his stick I recognized him the second I saw him and called out to him. He dropped one of his sticks during the set so I asked for it afterwards. He smiled and tossed it right to me. Edit- Watch his left foot and you can see what I'm talking about when I say he actuates them both at the same time.
Oh yeah! Now I see it. Thanks man. I've been drumming just a coupla years and the first time I realized that was going on was when Gene Hoglan pointed it out in one of his Atomic Clock videos (you know those boots he wears). Then I started hearing it a lot more, like from Inferno and also somewhere on Abigor's "Fractal Possession" album. And I gotta check out one of those stands, 'cause even the two-legged ones are a bit crowded for my setup. That sounds like it would've been a killer show...love those small venues! Origin is fuckin' awesome to behold. BurnThePope!
Geworfen Heit Cheers! Glad I could help and I definitely agree with the hi stand remark. Unfortunately I have a three legged one and it's so damn annoying trying to to set that thing up. Never feels "right". The stands are spendy if memory recalls around 150-200 but they are definitely worth it. Oh ya Gene is the man! George from Nile does a similar thing every now and then too, another guy that uses hats creatively would be Kevin Paradis (could have messed up his last name). If you haven't checked him out do so. The dude will be a legend one day mark my words. He's been playing for like five or six years and it's unbelievable how good he's gotten since he started his channel.
2:20 a drummers nightmare number 1, however, his double base playing is fake as shit. I see what trigger he's using to make it seem like it's twice the speed it is
jason byrne The triggers are irrelevant, he’s playing heel toe double strokes which looks like his legs are playing halftime but in reality he is playing every note heard. Please let me know if any of that was confusing, I may have explained it poorly
@@todgym5671 haha, I was waiting for someone to reply with this, I half expected replies believing it lol.. but I know he uses heel toe, I just wanted to see how many people didn't know it and believed it's fake, because I've had endless comments yelling me I was wrong about heel toe etc . Sometimes I felt like banging my head against a wall because I just wasn't getting through to these people.and a lot of people believe triggers are cheating.. they are not at all, they just add sound that you just can't get sometimes from a kit, and they work wonders for recording because they can take up less time for the engineer like myself, I'm a sound engineer/producer.
Frank Licata jr but sloppy as fuck, and I'm not saying it as a bad thing. Spencer from Archspire IS super fast, his gravity blasting skills are out of this world, but he's lacking on the fill department, and not as precise overall. John is precise as fuck, and his fills are just tasty. Btw, this only my opinion, please don't hate me :(
I like both of them. Saw both of them. John is faster with his feets, spencer with the hands. Both of them playin pretty accurate and keepin timing. But i think, john is gettin old...😔 I miss songs like wrath of vishnu, swarm, purgatory... Spencer is in his best condition... Maybe its only my impression. But hey, 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
