This is something a bit different from me - a new series that explores a band's early days up until the point they got signed. Let me know what you think and who you'd like to see featured next!
The Strokes felt like the perfect place to start as when they arrived in 2001 they seemed impeccably formed. But as I discovered just a few years before they were playing cheesy Metallica and Bob Marley covers and Julian was too shy to even perform live. In the video, I also get into when Julian and Albert met as 13-year-olds at Switzerland's most expensive boarding school, how they came up with the Strokes name and why producer Gordon Raphael initially felt their garage sound was past its sell-by date.
For the thumbnail I've used an image from Cody Smyth's book The Strokes - The First Ten Years, which I believe is getting rereleased later this year (2023). It's a wonderful document and I'd say the perfect stocking filler for that Strokes fan in your life.

The strokes were the first band i "discovered" on my own. I saw the uk version of is this it in a local record shop. Me being like 10 or 11 was of course interested in the cover. They were part of the reason i wanted to learn guitar and drums. Shout out to the strokes fr ❤

I grew up in the 90’s…but I was getting bored with the post-Grunge sound (Godsmack, Creed, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock). I still liked some of the nu-Metal like the Deftones. But all in all, a lot of that late era 90’s rock seemed like a relabeled repeating of Alice In Chains, STP/Pearl Jam, Rage against the Machine …etc. Radiohead ruled the late 90’s but they started changing their sound with kid A. Great music but they had abandoned their guitars. I had heard of the white stripes in fact. Hello Operator was my 1st garage Rock revival song that predated the early 2001, “Garage Rock Revival”. But it wasn’t until I heard the Strokes that the whole scene came together (The Yeah Yeah Yeah, Interpol, TV on the Radio) . I like that English bands envied the strokes (the strokes were a billion times bigger in Europe than America). The strokes had a big shadow over the music scene in Europe that they quickly embarrassed what was left of the British rock scene. Because they felt British to the era of rock music. The libertines were strokes groupies for a nano-second. Until they became a band. Even the killers benefited from the strokes with their fake British accents on Mr Brightside. The strokes success and aesthetic gave the world the 2nd wave of the garage rock revival: Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and eventually the Arctic Monkeys. Just like buddy holly impacted the British music with his influence on the Beatles in the late 50’s. The strokes were an influence on the UK Music scene in the 2000’s.

9:06 so iconic.. i mean the way julian was going to the sessions, like a random friend of the band , incredible that from that kind of guy came out that amazing voice that was perfect for the strokes music and made that band exist for what it is. Really thank you for this documentary, was amazing to see !

As an early Strokes Fan I approve. That being said most docs and other journalist don’t mention how they blew up in Europe especially in the UK. They challenged the uk rock status quo. And they sparked a rock garage revolution that bounced back to America but not to the level of the UK & the rest of the world. Either way I learned a lot….props & respect to you. 😎

A very well done video! I discovered these guys shortly after I did The Verve. If The Strokes are my favorite American band, the Verve is my favorite British band. Although I’ve seen a short documentary on The Verve, I love the way you present and so would love to see one from you! ;) Thanks man, and keep up the excellent work.

I wonder what their rich fathers were saying in those early years? Sending them to the best schools and then they all started growing long hair and what, being directionless? Talking only about music and not school majors? I wonder what their relationships with their fathers were like for awhile then.?

Julians dad is a multi millionaire. He sold high end fabrics to designers. Got them gigs on fashion runways. They have a guy that literally wrote all their songs. They're literally a fake band.
