A HUGE THANK YOU goes to Mr. Michael Kaulbach (the gentleman seen in the video) for his passionate work on maintaining and operating this elevator aswell as showing it to us and sharing his big knowledge about it - right on camera! We truly got to see every thing this rare vintage beauty has to offer and we got a very thorough documentary film out of it! Thank you so much!
This elevator is completely original and it has a Westinghouse traction motor. Watch it in action at 27:26 in this video

I am the grand daughter of Wm. Gordon Turnbull, owner and manufacturer of Turnbull Elevators. The Turnbull family took so much care and passion to provide the public with the finest quality elevators. It still amazes me to see so many Turnbull elevators and escalators still in operation. My great grandfather Michael Turnbull, started Turnbull Elevators in Toronto at 126 John Street in 1900 with one building. He eventually had to expand to two large buildings. He owned the entire block of property from Peter to John Streets and Richmond to Adelaide Streets. Thank you Michael Kaulbach for taking such passion and care in maintaining a our family legacy.

My father was an engineer for Turnbull from about 1939 to 1981. Those steel and glass doors are heavy indeed... We had them in our house.

What a cool guy. Taking his time to explain and show it all. Apparently a person who cares for his job and sees the historical value of that elevator.

Awesome to see a now 99 year old elevator soon to be 100 years old. Great to keep history alive - thanks for the video and yes the operator Mr Michael Kaulbach takes pride in his job indeed. BTW Stephen King's movie ABC 1997 miniseries version of The Shining at the Stanley Hotel has an old vintage gated Otis elevator and there is a scene where "Jack" needs to adjust the height because it was too low or high to floor level. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

I think our 1927 building in Toronto had this company as the original elevator the car and the old gate still in place the crank and motor were replaced many years ago. Amazing that its still going.

Wow, amazing elevator but also amazing owner/operator. Nice that he let you control it and show you guys the inner workings of it. The gentleman is very knowlegable about it too. It's great that they preserve these sort of elevators in canada, even with the manual control. The door interlock mechanism on the shaftdoors looks very straightforeward. I suppose it's original.

dykodesigns2yt I'm very sure it is original. Most design back then was straight-forward..No complex bullshit and cheap quality like today. And as he said, the elevator is extremely dependable. Only some small contacts cause issues sometimes but overall this 90-year old elevator is still going strong. Machines like these are made so well that they just get better by the years. That time was a glorious era of engineering and craftsmanship. They can't make 'em like this anymore

Hi guys, this is the building caretaker Michael Kaulbach, the fellow in the video. The elevator service company recently found this video and expressed some concerns that an inspector might see it and fines could follow. The main reason being that at one point in the footage it appears like we are physically on top of the elevator cab. I would like to clarify that this is not the case. I leant into the open hall gate to turn the light above the cab on and off and to describe the function of the other controls found there. The camera operator held the camera at arms length over the cab for the panning shot seen at one point. The closeup directly after was a camera adjustment and at no time was anyone physically on top of the elevator cab, neither at any time during the entirety of filming was the cab attempted to be operated by other than the normal controls within the cab in it's everyday normal mode of operation.

I went to NYC yesterday and filmed some AMAZING elevators! But something happened yesterday. But it was kind of worth it even though the elevator was not working since they lost the key but the lighting still works. I'll show you the video.

More than a half century ago, one of my 1st office jobs was in this very building and using this very elevator. Brought back memories even though the elevator was in near unrecognizable condition now. As a young kid I recall how unique the experience of this ride given me everyday by and older well uniformed gentleman operating it. It was a luxurious elevator back then, as unique and classy as could be. Though happy to see it again, I was so saddened by its condition. So wish you could have seen it in its hey-day (anyone got any super 8 film or photos?) .Also comes to mind the one rickety old vintage escalator on T.O.'s Queen street near Yonge in the Department store there (Simpsons across from the old Eatons with the Christmas display windows); and the vintage phone booths at a CNE building with wooden seat, lights, shelf/table... such a comfortable booth. Vintage back then when a young lad, such beauty they were.

I was able to ride this elevator and it was a really interesting experience! I wanted to keep riding it, or come back on a random day even though I didn't need to go back to the ISP office, but I didn't want to bother the guy (it was the same person as in your video)
