I look back on my year with the Polaroid Onestep+ and see how it performed, with sample images for review.
Is it better than older Polaroid cameras from the 70s and 80s? Is it even as good?
I put photos I've taken with it next to one from the 1980s to see how it compares, and have a Polaroid Supercolor 600 on hand for reference - then reveal why I'm selling it and what I've replaced it with.

Just picked up a 80's Spirit 600 CL in perfect shape in Japan inside a Hard Off for 4400 Yen. The man inside the store said it was never tested and they aren't sure if it worked. Luckily, my friend outside had a packet of film and his own Polaroid. We bought it and he put a new film pack inside showing me how it operated, and everything worked perfectly. My first shot of a few vending machines... came out immaculate after I let it develop in the car on the way home. That night I went out into Kumamoto, and made some fantastic memories. Professional photographers seeing me take pictures in the area personally came up to me to tell me that having it was "so cool!" and "much respect!" I have fond memories of my father taking pictures of me with a polaroid. I'll never sell it when I take it back to the states. I'd much rather purchase the film rather than an expensive camera. Two dollars is worth a priceless memory.

I love this so much. Not only because you got a cool camera and are making great new memories, but because there’s such a great story with it. This is what photography is about. I love hearing these and this might be my favorite story anyone has ever left on a comment here. The bit about your dad really hit me. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have an original 660 and a Polaroid Now. They both take the same quality pictures; which are not nearly as good as the ones my parents took on the 80’s. It’s not the camera that’s inferior, it’s the new film.

That’s such an interesting point. If only there was some way to fairly test old original film in these cameras now! ThT be would be fascinating. Thanks for making this point!

If instax made a film in the ifilm format I'd never buy another pack of Polaroid film.

Excellent video Gareth! Thank you for taking time to walk us through the good & the "eh" about the 1980's Polaroid vs the newer ones. I was thinking of getting a refurbished 80's one from a local store by me but was second guessing myself, thinking it was possibly wasteful because the newer ones are less expensive. I agree, my expectation is not that the instant photos will be crisp and perfect. Im going to get the vintage camera & have subscribed to your page. Thanks much!

This is so great to read, thanks so much for leaving this comment. It’s awesome to meet another like-minded soul! Let me know how you get on with the camera. And thanks again for the sub (and apologies for how long it took me to see and reply to this)

It's very frustrating that the newer Polaroids offer such an inconsistent experience. I have a OneStep2 and it's very tricky to get true "keepers" out of that thing, except in very specific conditions. While I don't like the look of FujiFilm Instax photos as much, they're at least consistent and still have that instant photo look we all love.

Yes absolutely. If Fujifilm - or anyone else - made Polaroid sized prints that had similar nostalgia and consistency…

@@garethbartlett Rumor is that Polaroid is working on an updated chemistry for their photos. Also, the Polariod website says they're developing a camera for 2023 that will, and I quote, "rival the titans of the ‘70s and ‘80s in terms of picture quality". I'm really hoping they pull it off and it's actually that good. That would be absolutely amazing. Fingers crossed.

@@garethbartlett Would you not consider the Instax Square to be comparable to the Polaroid 600 size? Last year (2022), thinking it was the new model (oops!), I bought an Instax 7+ for my daughter for Xmas. I was hoping to get her as interested in photography as I am. Unfortunately, the 7+ takes abysmal photos. The shutter speed is so fast and the focus is so limited that you need to be about 3 feet from the subject and you still get blurry, overexposed images with black backgrounds in any lighting conditions. I’m looking for a better instant camera for her this year.

@@totallyfrozen The Instax square sized film is maybe 15% smaller than Polaroid film
