Fun fact: Polaroid film now comes in 8 pictures per pack instead of 10 because the chemicals they used originally are no longer produced, resulting in a new formula that's slightly thicker on the paper. That means on older cameras, you have to manually subtract 2 from the displayed pictures remaining count.
and resulting in the discontinuation of the spectra line of film. the motors in most of the camera's just couldnt handle the thicker film, resulting in jammings. wich is sad because the larger polaroid frames were really nice!
The modern day and cell phones have everyone thinking that they're a photographer when in reality there's actually a lot of work that goes into doing it
@@toddoverholt4556true. Thanks to his previous video I discovered the SX-70 and I instantly fell in love with it. I bought one and the photos it takes are very precious to me (and maybe because I spent 200€ in film lmao) I’ve taken it to a car convention at a local track and everyone loved it, even they gave me free stickers in exchange for a photo. Fair to say I’ve probably spent 30€ in photos alone
@hassansanem4853 my dad has a photo studio when I was a kid and rainbows were pretty much synonymous with photography back in the day, same thing with polaroid cameras. Your dumbass getting triggered over a rainbow is pretty funny tho ngl
Shitty nuggets (that got many 1-grit treatment on this channel) never really went away. I have a $10 one that I use for playing white noise while I sleep. The mid-tier ones (around $100), which is competent, not completely garbage but also not crazy audiophile level, are pretty much gone because you can easily just use your phone. The only "named" brand that I think still make these are Sony (like the NW-E394).
Can confirm, having a music player again is great! Having a little nugget that only has my music and doesn't connect to the internet (but DOES connect to bluetooth!) has already saved me. I load it up with audiobooks and Doctor Who audio dramas and I just listen to them at work. I bought a 7th gen iPod Nano (na-no) off eBay and it's a great little thing! So tiny, slips into my handbag no issue.
Combined with the vinyl resurgence, I really feel like we’ve started to enjoy value and physical ownership of the media we consume, not just having it as convenient as possible. As someone who’s obsessed with vinyl and instant photography, I’m all for it!
Not at all, The resurgence is simply nostalgia. But the thing is, it's not that we're enjoying physical more, is that stuff like Polaroids and Vinyl aren't instant, so you gain more attached to them. Vinyl sucks as a pure listening thing. Your digital music (when mastered properly) will sound way better out of the same system than a vinyl. But, because Vinyl forces you to go through a process, it feels different than Spotify. It's a more intense desire, so it's a more intense feeling. Its not Vinyl and Polaroids that are giving this effect, it's the fact they force you to take it slow. And anything that slows you down will feel better.
I don't know if this is just the case for me but the only reason I buy vinyls is if I'm getting them more or less direct from the artist and its a very tangible way to directly support them. I can't say I prefer listening to them, lossless digital just *is* better for me. Physical, tangible experience with music listening sure is fun sometimes though.
@@Xyler94That's one of the reasons I like to listen to vinyl. It takes more effort but that's kind of the point, when I listen to a record its very intentional. I look through the ones I have and make a specific choice, and generally listen the whole way through. It's not just something to put on in the background or while out and about like Spotify tends to be. Plus it's just really cool to own your favorite music rendered into physical form
I got an 660 Sun a few months ago for like $20. The fact you can pick film up at Walmart allowed me to get a picture days before my dog passed away. I'll forever be grateful for it, something about touching a physical photo taken by bouncing light to change the film hits different than digital.
Thing is, polaroids are truly a part of that moment; heck the way the colors develop is entirely dependant on the temperature and shielding, making summer photos extra orange and cold photos blue. Film really is little pieces of time
I've never thought of it before but looking back I can see why every single polaroid I have from my childhood in the 90's looks slightly off, all we had was a rangefinder style polaroid camera!
I got interested in the impossible and polaroid cameras when they first started to come back and man was it weird learning that teenage engineering designed the original impossible camera. I had just purchased an OP-1 and a couple pocket operators. I thought they only did audio/synthesizer stuff.
I remember working at Urban Outfitters back when impossible acquired polaroid. I used to tell kids who wanted one to save their money and go to a thrift store before buying a "refurbished" polaroid from UO. They'd get the film from us ofc but $7 on a possibly working polaroid is a lot better than $160 on a eh condition polaroid camera
I feel like the rangefinder Polaroids would be so much better if the rangefinders were binocular; having two viewpoints, one for each eye, could potentially alleviate some of the alignment problems since you don't have to compensate for the parallax of a single eye.
I've got myself a land 660 from the early eighties. Film is about two bucks a photo, and it's great to bring to car shows. People get such a kick out of a camera that old.
Because of you I bought a polaroid supercolour 600. I brought it with me at comic con, now I have a photobook with polaroid photos full of memories, thanks, mister Dank.
A lot of people assume that the newer generations are obsessed with everything new but in reality we find vintage stuff like this infinitely more interesting and fun
I've made that observation as well. The person I know who is most into old tech like this is my little sister, who isn't like super young, but still from gen Z.
I’m 18, and got really into black and white 35mm film photography. Developing and scanning everything at home. And it so fun. Glad film photography is Starting to make a comeback back.
I think it's a healthy thing, honestly. It's easy to get caught up in the sheer advancement of newer technology that we forget that some aspects of otherwise defunct technology were actually compromised on. Now that we're at a point where we're able to assess contemporary technology against technology from before the 2010s (for example), we might realize that we might be able to create even better and more modern technology that has less of the compromises that were made in the advent of modern technology at its start.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio See I would love to agree with you that it's outrageous... however the NONS camera has desensitised me. And the cost of film. And the cost of developing film. And the cost of lenses. And the cost of realising you got shafted with a scratched, fungus filled lens and they don't accept returns. So all in all, not a bad package imo 😂😂😭😭 please help my bank balance is crying
@@AhDollar i'm sorry? i'm not sure i follow - when i take 35mm film pictures, i mean standard since the 60s (ish) 36 shot per roll kodak that i need to wash, develop, dry, etc, rather than video :)
@@samtansleyphotography I mean when people record something with their digital smartphone camera, then say they filmed it, or sometimes, you hear them say they videotaped it
@@supersmilyface1 well, japan still made flip phones until the early 2010s when they've started making smartphones. Flip phones but fitted with current tech and more. There are still flip phones even today, Nokias with today's stuff like RU-vid and stuff.
@@JoCaTen I own a flip phone that was made just a couple years ago, but it's pretty cheap. I've shopped around online for better ones and haven't had much luck finding a really nice one that's unlocked. I've been very tempted to get a Japanese flip phone that someone got to work here in the States, but I'll need to do some research on what providers will support it. I doubt my current one does, but if I'm able to switch in the near future that may be what I'll resort to.
Absolutely, also do remember to take those breathers, let the juices stew n all that jazz, need some good ol' genuines abt a bit more n best way of ensuring that is looking after that❤
I ran probably 100 exposures of the new film through a OneStep 2 throughout 2022, and I finally just got fed up with the horrible quality of the film. Over 50% of pictures had very noticeable defects, ranging from horizontal banding to corners not developing at all to horrible chromatic defects (not just ambiance, the pictures were ruined). I switched to Fujifilm Instax, and I have had exactly zero defects through over 300 exposures. I like what Polaroid is doing, but the quality is atrocious, and their chemical process, which does produce cool color effects when it WORKS, is clearly vastly inferior to Fuji's.
Ooooo thanks for the heads up about capacitor issues, that might be why a couple of ones I bought managed to take a single photo and then fail. (Also a general tip if you want a good focusing 600-style but can't get an SLR one, I can recomment the Impulse AF) EDIT: I've just jumped on the Polaroid site and the new Now cameras all have type-C 👍
You should try the LOMOGRAPHY line of cameras, they're essentially regular film cameras with instant capabilities! I have the Lomo' Instant Wide and I can adjust aperture, do macro photos, and even play around with the exposure (as in take many photos on one instant-photo with it's MX feature.) I highly suggest you just pick one out for yourself! Especially the Lomo' Square which has this insane pull-out factor. They're all brand new, made in Vienna. Please try one out!
Never had Polaroids but I definitely remember the days of photo rolls. Couldn't even find out what it looked like until you took the whole thing to get developed. Good times.
You don't know how much it means to me, to see you do a Polaroid video. I wanted to get a Polaroid camera for A YEAR now. You remembered me of a passion I have almost forgotten.
5 or 6 years ago when I walked into my local Walmart and saw a Polaroid on the shelf, I nearly cried because I used to love taking pictures with my grandma on her old Polaroid back in 2010 when it was already out of style. It brings a tear to my eye every time I think about it.
I got a Poloroid OneStep for Christmas last year and it came with a pack of film. Been trying to figure out what to take pictures of because the film for it's pretty pricey! Really happy Poloroid cameras are coming back. Glad you showed off some other types and compared the photo quality!
I will add, one of the things you can do is take the camera to events, take pictures of people, then you can give the picture to the person and it makes their day
7:09 Holy damn, these are the same drums that were used in the music video for "Amerika" by Rammstein. I always thought they were just weird moon landing looking props with all the NASA livery and stuff!
I actually have an experiment for you, and it involves Tony. My dad has told me back when he lived in communist era Poland in the 60s and 70s, him and his friends would jump start old Polski' Fiats and Trabants with a Polaroid film battery. I'm not sure the likelyhood, but might be fun content. Cheers mate, you are an absolute ledge.
i got really into vintage polaroids when i worked at the thrift store and impossible project was still a few years away from being bought out. so so happy to see them going mainstream again. might are probably toast from improper storage though unfortunately. also you should develop polaroids face down, if you’re out and about i usually stuck them in my pocket
You're the reason why I went out to a antique store and bought the classic onestep! I am still trying to learn how to use it but I will one day get a good photo. Thanks for the inspiration!
I actually have my pops' old SX-70, it was the white plastic version, with the coffee brown leather. Beautiful condition. Unfortunately, the feeder piece where you insert the film was missing. Still a neat piece though. He even scratched his initials and the date into the leather. "G. D. 8/17/1973".
I worked electronics at a US retailer a couple years ago and these new models and film were flying off the shelves, especially during covid. People really liked the more physical and nostalgic look of it, and it was mostly teenagers buying them. Really neat stuff!
I remember when the impossible project first got hold of the factory and they were selling original Polaroid jackets they found in the back to raise funds. We also bumped into an impossible project rep in a store (I can't remember if it was self ridges or harrods, I think harrods in London) and the guy was psyched that we just knew who impossible project were. I'm so so glad to see the progress they've made since those early days.
This is fun to watch for two reasons. One because these are huge in the cosplay community, and two, because I have a Polaroid Hi-print printer, which is great for journaling, and I have noone to talk about it with so I'm here telling you about it 😂
From when I was little, I had a fascination with instant cameras, but the technology switched to digital soon after and I didn't have much actual exposure to them. Your video last year peaked my curiosity and I did my research and went out and bought an Instax Mini 90 instant camera. (It's an older model, but it has the most features of any Instax or Polaroid camera.) While it's more inconvenient and more expensive than using my phone or DSLR, I really enjoy it. I believe that the limitations force you to take more deliberate and meaningful shots. Thank you for the inspiration.❤ (PS. I hope I can buy a vintage Polaroid SLR in the future, but they are quite expensive. If you like fidling with settings, I'd suggest the Instax mini 90. Just note that the film is significantly smaller)
Hey dank, you got me into polaroid photography! Im only 14, i have a Polaroid The button, which looks similar to the onestep and takes sx70, im still learning it, and where i live film costs quite a bit, but its really fun!
I've actually picked up a few Polaroid cameras since your last video on them. I got a Autofocus 660 which is kinda the same body type as your rangefinder one, but with the addition of having the sonar Autofocus, I also got a Polaroid One 600 which is a newer one from either 90's or early 00's based on the design. Then I have a Polaroid Spectra System which is like a more advanced version that's a cross between the slr and land types. Sadly that one's film doesn't get made anymore.
My biggest fear over physical film dying are the memories. I totally feel your sentiment. I love looking back on old photos of me and my family, it's so cool to see. Now storing it as data, things break, things get lost, things die. It's a lot easier to lose a photo now
So glad to see film on the rise again. I've never had a Polaroid, but I shoot plenty of 35mm on my grandfather's old Leicaflex SL. I might be a bit biased on the whole "film vs digital" thing as a film projectionist, but hey :))
Your polaroid video last year made me go down the whole pipeline and I bought two cameras (a vintage 660 and a new i-type) it’s so god damn cool and is great to pull out at parties and when I’m just chilling with friends. So just coming back to say thanks.
My baby brother LOVED his Polaroid camera ! We're talking the mid '90s here. I still have several pics he took when he was a young bloke. I really miss him , RIP little brother....😢
I hope they release one that has the fold that covers the lens for when you need to travel. Something about it I just love. Either way I think I'm going to pick up one of their new models soon
Your videos being me joy every time I see that they have been uploaded! Love your videos and love the drum stuff and car stuff!!! Just love ya trash family o' content in general lol keep it up!!! Comet says nothing -he's a bearded dragon, no emoji tho :(-
I think this might be the first time I've seen something go from ubiquitous, to nearly extinct, to just some niche thing that hobbyists did, to making an actual comeback as more and more people get sick of social media and smartphones. I love this stuff.
I love my Supercolor 635CL i got half a year ago and while it isn't as techonlogically advanced as the sonar one, i still love having manual control over my camera, even the new era polaroids don't allow manually controlled zoom
your last video pushed me to get a cool cam model (with bag) off of eBay ! I probably don’t use it as much as I should but I still love it and it’s nice to see you making a second polaroid video!
A few years ago I got the polaroid one step +, a polaroid that has some additional features like long exposure, double exposure and a remote along some others using an app. It's pretty damn neat and I definitely need to get into taking more pictures with it again
Wow man that's nuts. I remember buying impossible project film for my sx70 back in 2010 (I was born in '98) and that was the only place you could get it from. I still have a sweet collection of Polaroid cameras and I just started collecting and shooting with digicams. Long live older forms of photography ❤
To be honest i was thinking about ending it all today I was actually on my house roof before I decided to look at my phone saw dankpods upload a minute ago so I watched it just the way he made me laugh showed me life has a meaning to laugh thank you dankpods I owe you my life licherly
Hey, im glad you didn't go through with it! Im certain your life matter to a bunch of people, and im glad dank's videos bring you some joy^^ I know what that feeling's like, it's never worth it. Stay safe
I love film photography so much. I've recently gotten into 35mm film with a Canon EOS ELAN II E and it's so much more fun. Film photography and Polaroid just looks way cooler than digital
I'd love to see you take a look at some old 35mm film! If you want compatibility and focus, that stuff is your dream. Bonus points: Depending on the lens mount of your film camera, you can use lenses from as recently as 3 years ago with minimal issues! (Go with something with a Nikon F or Canon EOS EF mount for that. Alternatively you can go with brands like Pentax for that classic style where everything is 100% manual. So many options for film too. Black and white, colour negative, colour slide. Film photography (including Polaroid) has been making a huge comeback lately! Fujifilm actually has their own modern ecosystem of polaroid-type film called the Instax, which has 3 different sizes of cameras, less expensive than Polaroid, but just as fun to muck about with. Cheers!
So great you made a "follow-up" Polaroid vid. Thanks to your last video I got myself a Sun 660, haven't regretted buying, it's a blast taking photos with it. Still still looking for a not too expensive SLR though
Interesting tidbit about the sonar focus on the cameras, in the 70s when the US was designing its first stealth planes, they tried to photograph them with a Polaroid camera, but every shot came out blurry. It turned out the stealthy shape and paint of the plane was confusing the camera and making it impossible to take a photo of with that sort of camera, and it inspired the people behind the plane to apply the same tech to submarines, making them even stealthier.
Theres a handfull of those foldy polaroids at a antique store near me, i didnt get one because i figured id never be able to find film for it, but i may have to to get one now
Honestly went out hunting for an old Polaroid camera after the last video, and came back with a stunning looking 80's Polaroid One Step 600. Lovely cameras, and the best way to still do film photography if you don't want to convert the spare room into a darkroom.
It's interesting that it's only coming into stores in Australia now. I live in the U.S. and I was able to pick up a brand new one-step 2 after it came out at my local store in 2018
I haven't really gotten into instant photography, but I've been doing 35mm and medium format film and I like it for a lot of the same reasons. There's something about it that's special and I want to take all my important photos on film and then develop prints in the dark room. Though, for me it's more about the process of shooting, developing, printing. So, I still try to get the best possible photos. Just with film instead of difital.
Remember seeing your sx-70 sonar a while back and thinking of it like some rare artifact, now you can walk into any target to get 600 film, and even some sx-70 film if you're lucky. It's amazing to see it
I found one of the later 600 film units at a goodwill the other month, was glad to find I could get film for it on amazon, haven't used it a ton yet but I got plans on where to take it
Can confirm, picked up an old 600 camera for $5 because it was a near decoration, then one day figured I'd chuck some film in it. Worked like a charm no problem now I love buying a photo pack for trips and bringing it along for special shots!
My local CVS Pharmacy sells Polaroid 600 film packs and they also sell film for Fuji film instax cameras. They’ve done so for a while but it’s exciting to see that international stores are now also selling film
what a surprise! i watched your other polaroid video recently and got inspired to find our off brand polaroid camera and today i just took two pictures with it before seeing this video today :0
There is a store near me that sold Polaroid film for a while. For over a year or two now. Only select film and cameras and the Polaroid section is just one shelf, but at least where I live, we were able to buy Polaroid products for a while
I actually ended up picking up an Impulse AF off eBay right after I saw the last Polaroid video you did. Got it at an absolute steal for $30 with shipping, and I love this thing. Cameras and photography were never really my thing, but I am so happy I picked this nugget up, and I have you to thank for inspiring me to get into a new hobby.
I started doing photography with Polaroids because of your video a year or so ago (got me own sun 600, from a photographer that kept it in amazing condition) haven't used it in a month because I'm alot more busy now, but im heading to my local targèt to pick up my favorite method of flash bang today and will restart the cycle of physical photos, the instant I want them!
What killed Polaroid’s instant film business was the rise of digital media, which produced high quality instant images without the waste of paper. You can do things with a digicam that wasn’t possible on a Land film camera.
I took one of these new ones on a BDR motorcycle trip and the collage on my wall just feels more important then the digital photos I took the year before. Something about it, can't tell ya what but I'm glad they're back in full swing.
The modern versions have a plastic lens where's the old expensive units use glass. That is the biggest difference and causes the modern ones (even the 80's ones) to be slightly less sharp.
My theory on why it’s just a different kind of photos that just feels more real is because of the film grain that resembles the unevenness of the placement of the light sensitive cells at the back of our own eyes
This Polaroid film is around 600 ISO, it doesn't get grainy. It's more about the quality of the lens and sometimes the cleanliness of the roller that spits the photo out.
My family still has undeveloped film rolls from those disposable cameras. We used to buy the ones in the waterproof cases. I have a feeling even if we got them developed they probably would turn out well most of them are from the early 2000's.
