Eras Gone bullet molds: erasgonebullets...
This is a shooting session that I was planning since I got my excellent Eras Gone original Colt bullet mold, replicating the exact copy of the 19th century Colt Cartridge Works .36 cal conical bullets. Now we have our cartridge former to roll perfect combustible envelop cartridges, so let's hit the range and check how a 160 years old revolver shoots with a 160 years old bullet design.

@@spraynardkruger9903 Totally! For two reasons. You cannot really over-load a properly proofed black powder firearm. It can only burn so much powder over a certain time and by then unburned powder will be blown out the muzzle. In a revolver like this you can only fit what will fit into the chambers. Secondly the paper cartridge is just a convenient way to hold everything together and of course is not expected to bear any pressure whatsoever unlike in a metallic cartridge where the unsupported portion of the case-head must be able to withstand the pressure of firing. There is no such issue with a black powder revolver. Edit - I forgot to add, there is one exception to this and that is if you used a very fine grained black powder, too fine for the purpose. I believe this can dangerously cause too high pressures upon firing.

Although it is probably shooting a bit high due to wear of the front sight, it's also important to understand that these, as with all military Colt's, originally had sights set to be on at 75 yards. Typically they will pattern about 12 inches high at 25 yards.

There is always a risk of damage involved in shooting a pistol that old and with these revolvers condition is everything. You'll also want to preserve whatever finish is left, because that's where the value is and shooting and cleaning a gun often will affect this. I my opinion it's just not worth risking a 1800+ euro antique if a 300 euro replica will do the same job

No, I have to say that a constant pitch rifling can be just as accurate.
@ToreDL87

Easy to see why even the "puny" .36 caliber was not something to be taken lightly back then, what with accuracy good enough to take down any standing man and historical archives stating if no bones were hit (and if they were hit.... good night marie), these conical projectiles had no problems going through a man. The chamber mouths can be repaired, but then again that could detract from the collectability and so forth and so on. Perhaps a replica cylinder (and hand+stop, in order to ensure the old pieces still mate perfectly against eachother instead of developing a different wear pattern) can be fitted? Many humble thanks for yet another excellent production! :D

Do not chamfer your cylinder! Swage the material back into shape! Make a very flat cone of hardened steel that fits into the mouth of your cylinder. Grind a flat on one side of that cone. Put that cone into the damaged cylinder bore, the flat facing the damaged spot. Then rotate the cone over the dinged spot to swage it back. A little moly grease will prevent galling.

@HotPocketMcFarlane
@HotPocketMcFarlane 4 года назад
belbro62 especially when you get to see how they were usually loaded without cartridges. Measure black powder. Pour black powder in the cylinder. Put a bullet on top. Ram it home. Repeat x5. Prime each cylinder. Pray to god each one fires. Remember though that there were modern cartridge firearms not long after the civil war where loading a revolver was pretty much the same as it is today. The movie the Sisters Brothers was surprisingly accurate with their firearms. Most Hollywood westerns take place post-civil war where regular cartridge revolvers were already in regular use. Perhaps not as regular as they would lead you to believe but still. Smith and Wesson had pinfire revolvers quite early and their parents prevented colt from manufacturing modern revolvers until about when we see the “peacemaker” model of 1873. The Smith and Wesson model 3 (usually called the schofield even though most weren’t actual schofields) was available around 1870) and the Richards-Mason conversions for the old colt cap-n-ball revolvers to fire modern cartridges was around by 1871 or 1872. So still, a lot of the Hollywood westerns, while not always being 100% realistic where everyone’s got new revolvers, they’re usually relatively accurate for the time period.

@icspps

Yeah. It really depends on the year the story takes place in. Cap and ball revolvers are loaded like he did there, whereas later in 1871 cartridge revolvers and cartridge conversions became more common. They load and function much closer to modern revolvers, or Hollywood revolvers. Only movie I saw which actually dealt with this on screen was The Good The Bad and The Ugly, in which Tuco Ramirez takes apart several Navy Revolvers to put one together that fired cartridges. Ironically, the movie took place in 1965, before cartridges were common. In that same movie, you also see inconsistencies, as sometimes hes carrying a cap and ball navy, and other times hes carrying a cartridge conversion. But yeah, I think it's more ignorance on the directors part in most movies. Assuming all revolvers were always cartridge revolvers.

@ToreDL87
@ToreDL87 5 лет назад
Assuming you live in Europe, usually you can get these as antiques via local antique businesses in your country, that obtains them from U.S auctions. As for the .36 navy, a serviceable example (as in, one that shoots), costs in the neighborhood of around 2000 USD, that's around 1500-1600 euros, 1500-1600 gpb, or 16k danish/norwegian/swedish crowners, or 8k zl, etc etc you can do the currency conversion I'm sure. That's give or take, some times more, some times less. You can get one that has a worn-out/broken "mehanism" (if I may humbly borrow an original anecdote from cap'n ball) for a fair bit less, usually around 500-800 dollars. The key here is that the cylinder, frame and barrel all has to be in serviceable (shootable) condition, because they can't be replaced with replica parts as they count as modern firearm parts and have to be registered (which requires pistol club membership for x amount of time = Might as well get a complete replica) Then overhaul the hammer (as a new hammer is counted as a new firearms part and has to be registered = Pistol club, again, I assume you live in Europe) with some soldering/welding+grinding/filing, and add new wedge, new trigger (not counted as a new firearms part because a Single Action can be fired without trigger), new hand, new cylinder stop from Colt. These have to be matched to each other by hand-filing, not a hard task, but time consuming.

@453421abcdefg12345
@453421abcdefg12345 4 года назад
In fact it is more due to the very weak mainspring on repros, if you measure the hammer pull on your original Colt you will find it is at least twice the poundage of a repro, that allows the hammer to blow back on firing and not hold the cap on the nipple.

For a paper cartridge loaded revolver they shoot just as fast as any other revolver but the reloading action takes way longer. Now imagine a slow placed scean with the hero sitting at a table having a conversation with someone while preparing paper cartridges for a gun and carefully loading it. Finally, the slow reloading is a good reason to carry two guns but only a fool would try to fire both at the same time. I have one almost like it which was found, out upon the range, during military maneuvers, at one of the military posts I was stationed at back in 1981. I spent over a month restoring it to working conditions, as it was rusted and had one of the internal brass springs broken. One of the things that took me awhile to do by myself was trying to get it re-timed correctly so that when the cylinder rotated, it automatically lined up correctly (each cylinder to the barrel), again each time it was cocked. But, even after all these years, I still have never actually fired it as of yet. - One of the things I have also not yet found out, is if it is an original which was lost by one of the old Cavalry Troopers, or Artilleryman who were once stationed at the post, or if it is a Modern Replica. I've taken it to several local gun dealers/gun smiths in different places of where I have lived since then. but none of them seem to know if it is an original, or a replica. It does have a factory serial number stamped upon it. However, I refuse to give out (post), that serial number (especially if it happens to be an original), as it would be too easy for some unscrupulousness individual to take that serial number and try to claim it was his, and that he lost it. It also has all of the engraving of Navy ships and an engagement date engraved into (and around), the outside of the cylinder. The front site even looks like it is about as wore down as the one shown in this video. It also does not have the words "For use with Black Powder only" stamped into the barrel, of which you will generally find upon Replica's. It would be interesting to see if it is an original, or a modern replica. However, I have no idea of where to look, or who to contact in order to find out. In fact, this is the first video I've came across of which even has one like it. - So, Thanks for a great Video Eli Kasinger. A great job, well done. Thank You kindly, Sir.

The barley corn sight was too short for target shooting, it was intended for combat use with rapid targeting. For 25m target you need a ramp foresight about 4mm tall, and then bottom hold on the black should get you into the centre.

Minor on the range but in a gun fight you'd want to aim straight up in the sky when you cock the gun. This will allow the blown percussion cap to fall to the ground, allowing it to cycle horizontally can (rarely) cause a jam as the cap rolls under the cylinder.

Another reason for applying a smear of grease over the mouth of the cylinder was to prevent flashover from one chamber to the others. I used to own a .44 Dragoon - an extremely accurate revolver and not much less stopping power than a 44 mag.

Shooting any old Colt is always a process of gun fit , tightness and alignment plus projectile size , lube viscosity etc. You have a good combination. I see the wedge sits quite deeply in some shots , but when you shoot it , there appears to be a shim in the frame wedge slot . Is that to tighten the lock up of the frame ? My Navy was loose as well , and I found an easy solution was to make a shim from stainless automotive ‘feeler gauge’ and insert that in the muzzle end of the arbor slot . The feeler gauges come in a small tool with many different sized leaves , so you can experiment until you find the right size. By trimming it slightly wider than the arbor slot and then bending it by tapping the wedge in , the interference fit will keep it in place and it won’t fall out . On original guns that you want to shoot , all numbers matching , I believe this is a practical solution to avoid repairs that would permanently alter the historical value .

Charley Folkes I usually replace the wedge with a new old I machine from steel, and save the old one. Good tip however.

So, when in western movies they shot like a semi-automatic gun, it is wrong as we can see. The Colt 1851 Navy only shots in single action, isn't it?
@zombieslayer3452
@zombieslayer3452 4 года назад
Yes it is only a single action, but they fired it very fast, it’s cooler in movies if you can fire it rapid fire
@supermassiveblckman
@supermassiveblckman 4 года назад
@@zombieslayer3452 But...in movies, when they have the colt 1851 Navy (or Dragon), and they have the buscadero rig with the cartridges, is it a mistake? I mean, the 1851 Navy works with paper cartridges and the cowboys (or outlaws) had, in their pockets, a paper box and a fire-powder box, just for gun recharging, am I wrong? So, in the movies, the buscadero rig, with his slots for metal bullet cases used with a 1851 Navy, is a mistake... or not?

I can see why people stopped using this pistol. Of course, it may just be that it's worn down with time, but the accuracy of it at that range seems terrible.

Who else is getting some real "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" vibes from an original 1851 Colt Navy here? The guns in the film were Uberti guns, but still, to shoot an original 1851 Navy? What's amazing is how accurate the gun still is after 150 plus years.

Although your original has a longer barrel than my replica, of the 36 Cal, I shot better at the same distance with ball ammo. Grouping of 3 inches? So maybe ball ammo is better? I know it is more work but, I had a better grouping than the ammo you utilized. With a shorter barrel..
