Probably not what he meant but this is one issue I had with Eternal compared to 2016 Doom. The constant farming for ammo and health took away much of the fun I had in Doom 2016. I THINK he would like 2016 more than Eternal because its more similarities with og Doom games

@@lucri988 they make you get ammo like that because they realized that it's more fun to do it that way let me explain in doom 2016 they had multiple ways to kill demons and most of the ways where almost as effective as the other in doom eternal you have to kill a enemy a curtain way which creates diversity and more fun for the player generally

6:10 I mean maybe... In a noclip interview with Hugo Martin, the guy asked "Why are there rib bones in the skull?" Hugo simply replied "Because it looks cool." I think the statement can be applied to the entire game. The Doom Slayer doesn't **Need** a retractable sword or a flamethrower its just fun and cool to have

So the double jump isnt just the doom guy jumping off the air. In Doom (2016) it explains that the double jump is achieved by rocket boots that give a small thrust to extend the jump

@Sandy Petersen The double jump is just a way to make The combat and platforming more engaging. I really dont care if its lame. I would rather prefer a lame and fun game instead of a boring and realistic one

@Tiaan Not in the original games at least. But they have tried a lot of movement schemes for Mario. It is part of how to keep the game fresh. A bit like how double jumping was added to doom to emphasize more vertical movement. ;) Personally I think it works in this Doom.

Heck. Actual jumping was added to Doom. It was not in the original. You could though your momentum travel over a small trench. Which was used in some level design. But there was no jump button in original doom. So if you are a real purist, then jumping should not be in the game either. ;)

slayer doesn't even double jump. in doom 2016 (prequel to doom eternal) in midgame you get a special boot with jet parts that allows you to "boost" instead of flying.

@@SandyofCthulhu The best invention in the new Doom games is that you'll never need to break the flow and stop killing demons. You're low on health? Run away to find medpacks? No, go even more aggressive and go for glory kills. Low on ammo? Run around trying to find ammo? No, use chainsaw. Low on armor? Again go close and use the flamethrower. It's brilliant system.

If you get him to do it he kinda half watches then complains about everthing then tells stories about half related stuff and how "I dont get whats so fun about that" in about 6 variations. Yeah that was kinda disappointing attitude ... I mean I get it. He has his style of designing and it was his original.... but still Doom eternal is a great game and fun to play. I wonder what he dislikes about double jumps, I think they are not that bad or unfun.

I disagree with the do called purists. When I was a kid playing doom in the 90's it was awesome. When doom 3 cave out I hated it. Hated it with a passion. Then when the brutal doom mod and project brutality mods came I loved them so very much. Doom 2016 was amazing but brutal doom was ever so slightly better for me. Doom eternal was almost perfect. My only real issue with doom is the story. It's just too much. Way too much going on. The original have was simple and that made your mission simple.

@Sheev Palpatine If I were him I'd of likely been following every single new Doom that came out as that's his baby *as well as the gaming industry in general* , I almost can't even see this guy NOT staying up to date on gaming but evidently he hasn't; what I said really isn't even that rude either (world isn't full of sunshine and rainbows either bub-hes a grown ass man 👀), and he tediously shat on so many aspects of the game it's almost mind boggling-and honestly makes me think he might have some jealousy by how ridiculous & frequent the complaining was-plus his son is arguably the worst Doom player on the planet so it's no wonder his dad wasn't too jazzed about it.... He seriously had a problem with every-single-thing, even the cutscene when a Sentinal Mech hand blows open that wall, he actually had a problem with it as "that's not what hands do that doesn't even make sense!" Jesus it hurt my brain just to quote that.... I have immense respect for the work he did back in the day, I've played the OG Doom's more times than I can count, but this was just mental retardation I'm sorry 🤷

Tbf the 3d models arent 1 to 1 they are defo inspired by the sprites but I understand what he is saying (plus he said that to one of the demons that wasn't in the originals)

I remember people using that argument against doom 3, and they were kinda right, in doom 3 the demons largely did look like aliens, and between the constant PITCH BLACK EVERYTHING and the shiny graphics seeing any sort of fine detail was impossible so it only made it worse. But doom 2016/eternal has demons that look demon enough to me.

Let's be honest, Doom Eternal is more like a bouncy hyper-kinetic platformer with arena-based combat and loads of sparkly neon powerups that spawn from glory kills like candy from a piñata. It's a very different style from the original. Not bad, by the way. Just different.

I would say the platforming in 2016 is horrible, in Eternal you can fling past any section in less than 5 sec but in 2016 it was a chore.

Gameplay wise it is very different but art style wise it is very similar to original games. Here is game director Hugo Martin saying Doom Eternal was deliberately more like originals and more like 90s style arcade shooter visually. Doom 2016 was more similar to Doom 3 visually. @@fuckso2342 eh, sort of. The closest things in the whole game are the enemies, a lot of the art looks totally different however i do think the Art in the original doom 2 was kind of lacking and didnt exactly feel like earth anyway.. but once again this new doom game falls a bit behind in level design.. not enough open field areas , its still mostly corridors like doom 3. D00M was originally about speed and large areas with height to move around in. Doom 64 was more like the D00m 3 we should have gotten and still had similar design. I may make some videos further explaining my points. these new games go for the wow factor and seem more like arcade style games then spooky scary and fast paced. the Original Dooms were satanic Action Scifi movies, the new ones are like alien tomb raider karate movies.

Neat, an OG DOOM developer. I do enjoy hearing developer stories whenever I get the chance. Even better to see how views on game design may compare and contrast to this modern take. I hope this experience isn't muddied by the very recent patch the game received that many have reported has drastically lowered performance of the game, causing hard crashes and even deleting save games for some. My experience at launch was near flawless all the way through.

Well I'm sure any hiccups in the latest Doom pale to the very original version we sent out in 1993 which shut down college networks across the nation. We did manage to fix it pretty quick but ouch. We just didn't realize how many people would be playing Doom via network.

I'm a bit disappointed you didn't notice the Doom Eternal demons had been re-designed to look more like how they did in the original games! The zombiemen even have the green flat-top haircut!

To be fair to Sandy though, Doom Eternal is incredibly fast paced and his tenure with ID was years ago, so it's I feel like it's understandable he might have missed that - especially since he didn't even know Doom 2016 existed. Or, it's possible he did notice but just felt there were more important topics to talk about. I mean, with a few notable changes such as a smaller eye the cacodemon is pretty similar to the original and he didn't really take the time to say "hey, that remains pretty true to our original art style", so I suppose it's very plausible that he did notice but just felt it wasn't important enough to bring up. But I agree, it would have been good to hear his thoughts on that.

the player seems stuck in the 2016 game. he keeps tryna punch enemies which was a valid thing to do in 2016 but in eternal punch does nothing at all except when charged

These 3 videos are fantastic. Really appreciated your insightful commentary. One small thing to point out - the reason why doomguy can double jump is because he collected a pair of thruster boots on the UAC mars facility in the previous game, Doom (2016). In Eternal however, they went all in on an arcade style rather than the previous game which was more immersive; having a plausible explanation for everything. In this game there's just Bowsers' rotating fire hazards floating around in Hell, as you saw. As I'm sure you know, gameplay took a backseat in modern video games in favour of immersion, making Doom Eternal a refreshing change in that respect.

1:50 "Doomguy, the son of Commander Kee..." so ... If he worked on the original Doom games and he's saying that Doomguy is really Commander Keen's son, it must be canon. Atleast is hope so, because it would reinforce the theory that says that B. J. Blazkowicz is Doomguy's ancestor.

Says the demons look like aliens. Demons are designed off of the original sprites from classic doom...?? Lol you should look up the mancubus, cyberdemon, pinky, imp, and pain elemental and compare them to the sprites. They did a really good job with the art direction of this game. It looks very much like an updated doom 2

What makes this game great is the fights are crazy intense and fun. The exploring allows you to take a much needed breather to prepare for the next onslaught. Also. Double jumping is what makes vertical maps more accessible otherwise you' would need more platforms

Yeah, since when has Doom ever been about realism or function? Most of the time, the map design in OG Doom was extremely abstract and nonsensical.

So a doom dev talks about how stupid giant mechs are? This is... it's something. Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree with everything hs says, very calculated and down to Earth but we're talking about a DOOM game. DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal were both about being badass and metal as f*ck. Wrist blade forged in the bowels of Hell ? Badass! Huge mechs and hell titans fallen all around like statues tell stories. A lot of the design choices in Eternal were also just tribute to the good old shooters: floating and colorful pick-ups, fast movement and arena fights, 1ups, no reloading etc. So all in all, the devs were just trying to recapture the feeling of the original games and for us that was fast paced, brutal, unapologetic demon shooting fun. I think they did a fantastic job

@@DrizzyBo1 He was probably just thrown off by all the normal mapping, bloom, and other effects on the demons, and I'm pretty sure this is his first look at Doom Eternal period, so he's not looking at screen shots, he couldn't recognize them because everything moved so fast.

You should really played the 2016 DOOM, it was much more of a successor or Remake of the original DOOM. This one was more of a departure - great in its own right though for sure.

@D_ans I definitely did, the game is just not as good. It's primarily because it's made by singular leadership rather than a dual leadership and it shows with the ruining of characters like Samuel Hayden and VEGA.

Hi Sandy, have you played "Eternal Doom"? It's a huge Doom 2 megawad made by a group of mappers called TeamTNT in the 90s. It is an absolutely stunning creation. Some maps, 39 in total, have thousands of demons and take almost 3 hours to finish. I wonder if it inspired id to call its new game Doom Eternal.

Yes I know. It was explained to me. It's still idiotic. Imagine what a sudden boost from boot rockets would ACTUALLY do. You'd tumble every which way uncontrollably. Plus it's not like the designers thought, Ooh let's give him rocket boots. No they said, "he needs to double jump. How can we justify this?"

You would only tumble if your rocket boots didn't point straight down, its the same thing with all rockets. Besides, the slayer is a divine being, its in the lore of doom eternal. The bible say's Jesus walked on water, that makes even less sense then the double jump. - Without double jump and dash the game would be slow and boring. Thats my justification and video games exists to let us do thing we cant do in real life like the double jump. If you want it realistic then go watch movie! Games are supposed to be fun first of all, if you need to bend and change physics then so be it. Like after you shoot the surface of mars, you jump on debris in space... There shouldnt be gravity there but if there was no gravity the game would be lame and not fun.

Even in the original doom games he ran at full speed even when near death at 1% health and carried so many weapons that even a augmented space marine would be horribly encumbered. Even the current devs have said, its a game, have fun with it, don't try to overthink it.

@@jzay1899 Dude I was there in the original doom game. I don't demand realism. I would like any non-realism to remain in the background and not punch me in the face. The run speed in the old doom wasn't usually noticed - you just ran. And since you only carried one weapon at a time, the huge arsenal wasn't noticed. Double-jumping immediately and obviously violates the rules of physics PLUS it makes you mentally associate your guy with Mario instead of a manly warrior.
