The reason that Doom broke networks is that Carmack used the IPX broadcast packet that is supposed to announce network topology changes (Like if a new computer is plugged in, if a switch goes offline, etc). Broadcast packets are supposed to be received, and forwarded to every listener, so as each player was added it increased the amount of chatter exponentially. This is what happens when game programmers write network code without understanding the paradigms :) A patch was issued to have updates sent as discrete packets to each player, not broadcast to the entire network

I just want to say - pistol starting Doom has given me such a renewed appreciation for those old levels. I’ve played Doom on and off since ~1997, but I only started pistol start since 2021. I have missed out! It’s so much fun finding the best route based on weapon progression, and I see the care and craft that went into that part of the design.

For the record, I really like the "find the weapons in a hostile world" puzzle design which a player encounters when they're pistol-starting the levels. It's kind of odd how for a decade I didn't even know that that game mode existed, and now it's my favorite way to play.

I truly think this is why Doom's artwork stands up so well compared to most other sprite-based games of the day, that they used images of something "really" there. It's like movies that used models in the 70s and 80s versus pure early CGI of the 90s and how one holds up but not the other. It made Doom age extremely well throughout the years.

So, regarding the difference in sales between Doom 1 and 2, my personal story is this: I live in Sweden, and my first exposure to Doom was through the shareware version distributed on CDs. I believe I had one disc that was distributed for free at an expo of some sort, and another that came with a computer or gaming magazine. I was literally 9 years old at the time, and had no idea what that mail order stuff meant, but eventually I saw the fancy cardboard box for Doom II sitting on a shelf in a home electronics store managed by one of my dad's friends and got that, assuming that "Hell on Earth" and "The Shores of Hell" were somehow the same thing. It didn't take too long for me to be proven wrong, though, as someone eventually handed me a CD called "EasyStart" with a bunch of pirated games (a concept I didn't understand at the time) including the full version of Doom. I don't think I ever saw the boxed store version of The Ultimate Doom for PC, but I did buy boxed copies of every other id PC game from Doom II (1994) through Doom 3 (2004), plus Quake IV (2005) if you count that. It wasn't until 2006 that I got my first legit copy of Doom 1, through the 2006 QuakeCon pack on Steam.

@@SandyofCthulhu Thanks, but I was mostly trying to comment on how accessibility is an issue. The shareware model was fantastic for making people aware of and hooked on the game, but the sequel was bound to sell better when there were fewer hoops to jump through to get it. And... I can see how someone would hold a grudge after that...

Thank you for what you made! Doom has been an important part of my life for close to 30 years now. I'm glad that it's still relevant, through the new games, and that the originals still enjoy a thriving mod scene. The original game series is such a handcrafted piece of art, and those little "artist marks" you see everywhere in the assets and levels make you feel so involved in the creative process of the games. It's the heavy metal of games, before the heavy metal scene blew up; indie, innovative, and powerful. Doom is like your favorite B-movie where the passion and creativity of a small team of artists radiates from every aspect of the production. Doom is like your favorite first album you were listening to before the band became superstars. I love that you and other creators are still talking about how you made the game, and there are still stories to tell about how this legendary series was made. 7:06 That was the thing I noticed on E2M7 that I found really cool, in the start of the level the lighting comes from the door and makes a band of floor brighter, it's interrupted by the pillar in the corner so there is another darker sector behind to create the illusion of shadow. That starting view made E2M7 very memorable to me (and the rest of the level, I personally love it, even though many people in the Doom community don't have it in high regard as far as I know) 8:48 I hated that secret, it was on MAP27: Monster Condo. It took me so long (and opening Doom Builder to inspect) to find this one. Whenever I play a map, I don't just rush to the next area. I make sure I clear everything from the beginning area. It was highly unlikely that playing this map I would ever avoid a lot of the starting areas and rush to the next big area (with the arrow in the wall) in less than 30 seconds. Btw,. there are some other mysterious triggers that I don't know where they were use, for example one that says "After 5 minutes, door opens and then closes". I know this one was used in Eternal Doom (A 1996 megawad, not the modern commercial game) in MAP05 where a computer monitor greets you, it says "come back to me after 5 minutes". So at least they let you know this time ;)

To be precise, Adrian made the clay models, while iD commissioned the latex models to Gregor Punchatz (you can find his channel on YT where he uploaded a video where he shows the Spider Mastermind's original mold here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fz2Ex-3UWZg.html ).

@0neDoomedSpaceMarine 3 года назад
Yeah, the clay models were cool, but they found that when lighting the models for the camera, they'd warm up and the clay could just come apart in places when they altered the poses, which took time to fix. If you look at the Baron Of Hell's sprites, you can see that his hooves awkwardly shift a little in shading on some of the frames. This stuff took a lot of time and wasn't efficient, so they hired Gregor Punchatz to do the latex-steel models. Gregor's dad, Don Ivan Punchatz, was a talented painter, and they hired him on Gregor's recommendation to paint Doom's cover art.
@Fuchsia_tude
@Fuchsia_tude 3 года назад
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine I thought it was the other way around, they initially hired the decades-experienced film and book cover artist for Doom, and he recommended his son to make their monster models since he had done similar effects work for film and TV.

Hey, Sandy, I just want to say thank you for being part of the team that created this franchise. My dad introduced me to Doom when i was 3 years old and taught me for to play. i have wonderful memories of us taking turns on the pc everytime when either us us died or pass to the next level. We still play the game and nevere stopped. i'm 25 now and i play doom almost on a daily basis the same with my dad. there is a wholesome irony that i know teach him how to play it on the switch. it never gets old for us.
