This is a really special Original Irish experience. Your Host, Michael Wade, General Manager, explains below the experience that awaits you when you journey to Connemara and enjoy Farm Traditions, Seafood & Famine History. It is a signature day out at Delphi Lodge.
''We depart Delphi Lodge at approx. 10.30am after a hearty Irish breakfast and drive the short distance to Killary Fjord. There we meet Tommy, a traditional mountain sheep farmer whose family have been farming sheep in this rugged environment for several generations.
Tommy will demonstrate gathering sheep with his dogs and show us how he shears sheep by hand. We then visit Tommy’s family bog and our guests get to cut turf in the traditional way. While on the bog we can explain how the great Irish bogs were formed as the ice age retreated and how this abundant supply of fuel supported the Hugh population before the famine of the 1845 to 1849.
We then take a short walk along the Fjord to meet Simon and Kate Kennedy, Mussel farmers who will bring us out on the water to show and explain what mussel farming is all about. Now lunch time and while with the Kennedys we will have a wonderful seafood lunch, Oysters with wine, fresh mussels and chowder and an excellent cheese board with homemade breads. This all takes place beside the Fjord in a beautiful scenic and private location.
After lunch we are picked up by a powerful speed boat/rib which can take up to 12 guests. We are brought further out along the Fjord towards the open Ocean. Close to the Atlantic and under the shadow of the Mweel Rea Mountains, we visit a deserted famine village only accessible by boat, that has never been re inhabited. A very poignant place and the perfect location to explain all involved in the tragedy of the great hunger. Here we must scramble off the boat as there is no pier which means this part of the experience is quite physical. Later if we have time and weather permitting we can fish for a few Mackerel and bring back to the Lodge where the chef will serve it for breakfast.''
