Harmy's Despecialized Edition wins for me. The glow of Luke and Vader's blades are much more intense while keeping true to original color scheme of bright white blades surrounding by a focused haze of color.
Luke: What a show off! *Piece of his prosthetic leg is showing, Luke notices.* Luke: Hey what happened? Vader: Nevermind about that! *Vader has flashbacks*
@@conormcguinness3215 only him and James Earl Jones knew. Even the guy that played Vader didn't know and he originaly said that Obi-wan killed Luke's father
I think the audio here is taken from Harmy's Despecialized Edition, which is the theatrical version. Plus Luke's scream (which is actually the Emperor's scream from Return of the Jedi) was only in the 1997 Special Edition and then taken back out in the 2004 DVD release.
The Luke yell was added because in every version of the movie the sound is always edited for new home releases. I guess the sound editor added it and Lucas wasn’t aware which explained why it isn’t present on the blu ray and 4K Blu Ray
Max McClintock Looks kind of like the Grey Jedi lightsaber (like Ahsoka's lightsaber). In my opinion it looked pretty interesting to me :), but yeah I can't deny the fact that it's a raw film footage.
Autobot Ironhide. How can u say the 2011 Blu-ray has consistency with the lightsabers. Many times in all 3 films each of their lightsabers looses the white core. Look especially in the 2nd Death Star saber senes Luke’s green saber looks like crap most of the time. Here Vader’s saber in the Blu-ray keeps changing from pink to normal red
The despcialized edition fixed all the lightsaber problems. The blu Ray had it too pink but the gout and renegade had inconsistent oranges. Thanks harmy!
There's nothing to fix because Vader's Saber was never intended to be red. The red colour for Sith is a prequel era retcon. Vader saber is supposed to be pink, or 'magenta'. Changing it to solid red looks off to me.
It's fucked up that Rey Palpatine hardly does any training and is able to beat a Sith after never even touching a lightsaber before. Here, Luke can couldn't even last 1 minute. The only reason he lasted as long as he did is because Vader is toying with him. He's baits Luke until he gets him to a point where he can't retreat or run. Which makes it rewarding when Luke beats Vader in Return of the Jedi.
The grindhouse version really takes me back. My mind is telling me not to like it, because of its graininess and faded colors, but in my heart, I really like it.
It has a charm all of its own. Harmy's version is the way to go for home release but if I were going to see Empire in cinemas I'd take TN1's Renegade Grindhouse any day of the week. Harmy's looks excellent on a big TV but 720p loses its luster when you get to cinema screen sizes
Yeah, at first it grossed me out, but by the time we got to the climax of the scene, I was glued to the grindhouse version. It just felt right. The others felt too cartoonish, that blue lightsaber started to look purple.
After seeing multiple versions on all the disks a trillion times over the years, the Grindhouse look....oh man... I was transported back to the theater when I was 10 years old. I effing felt it.
Love the sharp reflections and contrast on Vsder's helmet in the Grindhouse edition, and Luke's white lightsaber gives me nostalgia from the VHS days 😀
The shot from Luke's perspective looking down at 7:56 was changed to show clouds moving in 1997, one of the alterations a lot of people miss (it wasn't in Marcelo Zuniga's excellent "All Changes Made to Empire" video). Glad Harmy caught it.
I wish they would put Vader's yell at 2:40 back in these newer releases. I have no idea why Lucas decided to reuse the earlier yell from when Vader got blasted with the steam.
A movie takes on a life of its own once it's released, and they really had an obligation to the fans to preserve that, rather than take license with a 'more accurate vision of what Lucas wanted'. Being aware of any little detail they could decide to change made the whole thing die more and more for me. I felt the same with Luke's ad lib on Degobah - "It's lucky you don't taste very good" instead of "You were lucky to get outta there." Bleh - just wrecked the character of the planet they were on.
I love the original throaty, "Arrrrgglllhhh." The 'new' version is more of a "Ooommph." Nowhere as good, just like the "Bring my Shuttle" was perfect, but was changed to, "Please alert my Star Destroyer of my arrival."
@@retroelectrical Yeah well they changed "Bring my shuttle!" to "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival!" cuz of the new shot of them walking towards the shuttle already on the landing platform. But yeah, think I still prefer "Bring my shuttle!" as Vader sounds more pissed off that he couldn't tempt Luke to the dark side. But not quite so when he says the new dialogue.
4:19 It looks like Luke is about to fall into the lower levels of Coruscant with how many neon looking lights there are in the grind house version, also at 3:50 Anakin, don't cheat pls
I definitely like the GOUT colors the best; they seem the most convincing. If that color scheme could be married to Blu-ray definition, it would be the actual ultimate edition.
Kinda like the Original Version better that shows a more Full or "Thicker" Lightsaber Beam and either whiter or more Blue or Red at times. Therefore the Top Left 2006 bonus dvd GOUT looks alot like the Original VHS version. And also Bottom Right Harmy's Despecialized Edition also looks good and modernized while still keeping true to the Original beam.
These movies were great because they don’t need dialogue or overly choreographed action they simply rely on the tension naturally provided by the movie to carry the emotional weight of the scenes
Luke toys with Vader in the next movie playing a uno reverse card and saying you couldn't bring yourself to kill me before, but Vader said Don't make me destroy you.
I prefer Adywan's Empire Strikes Back Revisited more than those 4 different versions, because through 1980 to 2011 Blu-ray George Lucas continually choose to ignore the jump-cuts that totally ruined the film. Adywan was the one who improved and added more frames to fix the jump cuts that George Lucas missed. When Luke stepped out of the cell tunnel, the cell doors appear to quickly and created jump cuts through 1980 to 2011 Blu-ray and the other dispecialized editions. Plus, the Lightsaber effects in Adywan's Fan made edition, the Lightsabers looks more vibrant and when the blades are touching each other, it's creating light effects just like from the Star Wars Prequel Era- Trilogy! That's what makes his Fan made edition more awesome! But for the looks of 2011 Blu-ray edition, the only things that are cool in that version is the dialogue changes that makes worth a lot! What's not worth is the way how the Lightsaber effects came out while Luke and Vader show off with their duel on Bespin Cloud City during at the carbon freezing chamber, even in different areas. So the Lightsaber effects that came out in The Empire Strikes Back 2011 Blu-ray should be worth nothing.
Harmys version is clearly superior to even the 2011 blue ray. There is more detail in every scene and the color timing appears correct (sky city is white!) It has richer and more vibrant colours as well as better black level in the Vader/Luke scene. Fantastic wirk
Grindhouse color looks more natural and realistic to me, like it hasn't been color-corrected... but it looks right, although the blacks are a little bit crushed, and the blues look greenish or magenta, but the highlights look amazing.
watching this high is amzaing, you see so much more, I realize now vader wasn't really even fighting the entire time, even in the end when he gets mad he's not even aiming for luke, in fact it looks like the only time he got serious was when luke got that cheap shot in and vader cut his hand off right after and you can see the imediate regret by vader's body language after it happens
All I want are the original 1977-83 theatrical versions, the ones I saw as a child, be released in high definition. I don't care for anything else...Special Editions, Prequels, non-canon Disney crap, etc.
I'm confused. Isn't Harmy's version supposed to look like it did when it first came out? Honestly it looks the best. And I've never heard of TN1's edition. Can someone explain these to me?
If I remember correctly, Renegade Grindhouse is supposed to have been directly recorded from a film reel. It's close to being as accurate as possible, but it has a lot of grain, artifacts, and faded colors in certain spots due to the quality of the source film. Harmy's seeks to make it look as close to how it would have looked in the theater on opening day, removing all that grain and fading that happened over time. GOUT is George's Original Unaltered Trilogy from the DVD release in 2006. It's not actually unaltered. Just mostly unaltered. It also has some of the same color correction issues as Grindhouse with a few other issues due to the way they put it on DVD.
Something that the other three seem to miss was the thickness of the lightsabers in the original version. Harmy's shocks me the most, I understand that he took inserts of different versions and sticked them in, I'm sure he could have stuck the lightsabers from the original and added color to them.
I think the corrected lightsaber is from Adywan's revisited editions though I'm not 100% sure. What I do know is Adywan got all the lightsabers corrected for A New Hope, which the de-specialized editions did not include as they were modeled on very the first SW cuts.
I agree! Adywan Revisited is a better edition! But the audio in Adywan is playing from the original 1980 version. I only like 2011 Blu-ray because of the dialogue changes! I love Adywan Revisited because of how cool everything looks.
Harmy and Blue-ray best in my opinion, because grindhouse have a good quality of picture, but bad colour correction. DVD have a good colours, but not good quality of picture
Um, you couldn’t tell by watching Empire? He’s just toying with him. Hell, he blocked an attack one-handed and knocked him down only to let him get up.
It's raw, uncorrected film. That's why! Modern digital systems use colour grading and old films used other techniques like chemical processes, but basically you need to go through a process to make stuff the 'right' colour.
There has been an unexpected copyright claim blocking the video from being played in over 200 countries(essentially world wide). I've filed a dispute on educational grounds(which went through in the past for the Death Star Assault video), and you should be able to view it now as it's being disputed.
I have the 2006 DVD and I think its a Laserdisc transfer. Now theres one last thing to check: the resolution. 2006 DVD is blurry and noisy. I think Harmy's remaster is the best option nowadays until Disney decides to telease a theathrical HD remaster.
the link in the description that is preceded with 'Learn more about these sources here' takes you to the about page of your yt channel which doesn't have any information..can you add something back in?
I am the only one noticing that Harmy's despecialized doesn't handle motion all that well. It's particularly noticable when characters are talking, something about the mouth movement looks off .
Grindhouse version looks the best to me,idk why just looks more vibrant, and you can actually see them in the darkened scenes which annoyed me as a kid when luke and vader fought there where parts where i could barely see them,im sure my grandmaws wooden tv with wheels was part of the blame though aswell haha
