This POST is showing the ORIGINAL "PHILLY SHELL" POSITION.
NOTE: The "PHILLY SHELL" is from PHILADELPHIA. The style many use is the METHOD MADE POPULAR IN MICHIGAN. BOTH positions work obviously! The ORIGINAL PHILLY SHELL position is shown HERE.

Woow That's exactly how George Benton used the philly shell, feet in L Position, moving foward and crounched a bit to the right!! You're right on!!! You're a true teacher!!

Sir, As Sayf has mentioned in other videos the Philly shell was used by some of the most aggressive fighters of all times one being the recently departed Jake Lamotta. Worth watching some of Lamotta's fights to see an aggressive use of the Philly shell.There are many old school fighters who used this style other that the great George Benton!
@TheUmmahFightCamp
@TheUmmahFightCamp 6 лет назад
Gary Bargwanna: Hey Dude, you are my dude, but Jake Is not the best exmaple of a "philly shell" fighter lol. Using it DOES require a better defense than Jake. Just holding your hands low does not cut it. Benton had the classic Philly shell style, and I would have to name him the inventor of what we call it today in total. Past guys who came close that are none black would be Tony Canzoneri, Jimmy Mclarnin, Benny leonard. They had style and defense.
@garybargwanna1516

Nice of you to take the time to respond to my post. Yes you are right Jake isn't the best example of the Philly Shell but when he was under pressure he used elements of the Philly Shell as a defence. What I was alluding to was that the stance or slight variations you were demonstrating has been used by some aggressive fighters. George Benton at his best was an intelligent go forward fighter and was brilliant fighting in the "pocket". Be prepared my friend for more debates about old time fighters when I visit you . I will pay for the coffee you buy the cake,
@TheUmmahFightCamp
@TheUmmahFightCamp 6 лет назад
Gary Bargwanna: NP lol, but be prepared to also let some favoritism go in the face of facts :). Rocky also used the bladed position when he first started a round. That said, every one knows when I refer to the Philly shell, I am referring to a manner of Offense yes, but a manner of defense. If we include the Michigan manner, we have Floyd Mayweather, James Toney, and George Benton. Love him or not, Jake Lamotta defensively can never make that group. Hagler is my favorite fighter of all time, but he lost the fight to Ray Leonard. Gotta keep that heart at bay dude. just the facts man. Just the facts.

Excellent tutorial I'm watching George Benton again straight after this video get some inspiration, the stance reminds me of some British Martial Arts point competitions where the competitors stand similar legs slightly wider. Lean over to the right a little not as much as in boxing. They raise the should high and dip the head with the hands set very similar to Sayf the L shape was easier for them to throw kicks lead leg kicks from I've seen people like Alfie Lewis from Liverpool, Chris Williams from Manchester, and Pele Reed from Birmingham use it.

السلام عليكم Very instructive video bro! I want to learn how to use the Philly Shell for boxing cause it's also a really good technique when you use kicks in other fighting sports. I noticed that the two foot positions you showed are almost exactly the same in martial arts : the first one with the bodyweight on the rear leg for defense and the second one with the weight on the lead for attacking

could you do a video about the orginal philly shell in the way joe frazier used it compared to the peekaboo style that mike tyson used with regards to slipping and bobbing and weaving?
@ddavis7338
@ddavis7338 4 года назад
Mannnn this is confirmation like I can't even explain, I'd spar guys more experienced and try the textbook stance and struggle... Then I'd fall into this stance naturally and dominate guys easy more experienced with shuffles, pivots, the off center head Bob , rear hand elbow makes em gun shy cuz they punch that sharp elbow and then I can be aggressive and am more confident countering and pressing the action. In the textbook stance I feel awkward, but when I get into that George Benton sort of stance I just flow man I need this program

Leaning on my backfoot in the philly shell seems to neutralize my jab.. Normally I boxed from the outside with quick jabs, but in this stance it is too slow.. I believe this is the ultimate stance but how do I solve this problem?
@paulodepablo3649
@paulodepablo3649 5 лет назад
Jay Williams distrubute the weight from back to front. Watch how floyd mayweather moves. His jabs arent there for knocking out his opponents but to gauge the distance and trick them into coming in so that you can dish out a swift counter with your main arm. Alternatively, you can move in while jabbing. It isnt going to be good looking but if you want power then that may help you out. Other wise, try leaning into your jab, a sway in to generate a bit more power.
