ORIGINAL Star Wars Opening 4K | Project 4K77 v2.0 Preview
This sample is from the currently work in progress 2.0 release of Project 4K77. Project 4K77 is a fan preservation which scanned authentic theater used prints in 4K Resolution and was painstakingly restored frame by frame. This version has had no Digital Noise Reduction, no Edge Enhancement, or any Artificial Sharpening. The color grading in this preview is temporary.
The creators of Project 4K77/80/83 are fans who have not received a cent of profit for their work, but have delivered a quality restoration which challenges that even of the official Disney releases. If you would like to support them or learn more about the projects, check them out on on www.thestarwarstrilogy.com
Project 4K77 is made free to anyone who owns the official 2011 or 2019 Blu-Ray Releases of Star Wars.

I was there, opening day, in 1977. It was The Stanley Theater, in Vancouver. 70mm Dolby. We stood in line for 5 hours. It was a mind blowing experience. When the credits faded, the music twinkled, we dropped down to see the planet...then the ships took over the screen. I went in an innocent 8 year old boy. I left with a heart full of magic and dreams.

I went to the premier in 1977 at age 14 & went on to watch it an additional 13 times. My friends & I would sneak on the train at Suffolk Downs station in East Boston, go to the Sack Charles 123 theater in Boston, watch the film, stay in our seats, & watch it again. They never threw us out.

@teresadalton741i seen the primer at the lowes astor theater in midtown manhatten on may 25th 1977. We were on line for hrs. But it was such a experience! I first saw the trailer first at a star trek convention or famous monsters convention. In n.y.c. as well as the movie in theaters. Seen it 20 times that first year! Great memories!😊

First, one has to appreciate that you weren't seeing this on your 70" flat-screen or even your home theater. No, you were sitting in a dark cinema, (no cell phones), popcorn in hand with 700 other people, with a great, big, glorious W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N projection in front of you. Plus, absolutely NOTHING like Star Wars had ever been seen before: The HUUUUGE ships, dazzling FX, characters, story, music, imagination, ALL of it a perfect storm of movie making. First, the opening "crawl", set to John William's rousing score, then we look down to see planets in front of us. Suddenly, the first ship zooms overhead, laser bolts flying back and forth. You knew they were running from something but . . . HOLY SMOKES!! The ginourmous star destroyer, its rumbling engines rattling your teeth, glides into view from somewhere behind you, so close you want to duck and look back over your shoulder. And then it just keeps on coming and there's just more, . . . and more . . . and MORE, almost as if there would be no end. And in that moment, you and the 700 other people all KNEW the next two hours were going to be pure magic! And they were. :oD
@michaeljones8168
@michaeljones8168 Год назад
Oh yeah. I was 5 and I distinctly remember my Dad reading the opening crawl to me, and then when the Star Destroyer was halfway overhead, him saying "whoa!". I wish I could relive that moment again. RIP Dad. I really miss you.

Has somebody who was born in 1998 and never saw the original on the big screen, I think this is the absolute perfect description of this opening shot. Even when I first saw it via the 2004 DVD release back in 2011, I instinctively knew that when I first saw this scene, it looked utterly incredible. And I was 13 when I saw it for the first time.

It was exactly like that! In my case not so many people though. I lived in a small, less than 10k people town, so we had a small theater and not a lot else to do in town as kids, so we all hung out there as much as possible. In those days, you could pay one price and watch every showing all day, so you might spend all afternoon and night there socializing, playing video games in the lobby and watching movies over and over. I remember the tickets being $3 each and you could get $20 from your mom and have more than enough for the movie, the games and snacks and still have some left over. BIG movies, like Star Wars would often stay in the theater for WEEKS! I saw this original Star Wars in that theater 110 times! To this day, it still hasn't gotten old and I'm as big of a fan as I ever was. My only regret was not holding on to some of those original Star Wars toys I had. Star Wars would take over a kids life then. I lived in a rural farming community, and I remember many times standing in a field on the edge of town, watching the sunset. In my mind, there were two suns setting, and I was like Luke watching it, with many adventures ahead of me. Playing with friends battling with makeshift light sabers we made from the wooden broom stick handles. I don't think our moms ever really figured out what kept happening to their broomsticks. When the Star Wars arcade game finally made an appearance in the lobby there was a never ending line to get a chance to play it. It was all too short and dream come true to fly an xwing! Never could I have imagine that here in my late 50s I'd be able to do the things I can in the Star Wars universe today. I can play in these worlds I grew up with, some in VR! I can hold a realistic looking and sounding light saber in my hand! I can play those games and watch those movies over and over again on a 110 inch projection screen with full surround sound! I could buy and wear the costumes and gear. I can literally go and visit a Star Wars planet, walk around and fly in the Millennium Falcon! I got to grow up with those heroes, and in some cases watch them eventually die. You young Star Wars fans must truly appreciate the absolute treasure (despite the sometimes off rail Disney misgivings) in the Star Wars universe you have at your disposable today. And it all started, right here, in the opening scenes on this video! If I could give any of you young people a good piece of advise it would be this.... NEVER. STOP. PLAYING! Sure, you have to adult sometimes, but never loose that inner child and never let the old man (woman) in!

This looks great! Some grain and specks here and there, but I like that, as opposed to ultra smoothness. Grain is film, and it makes it look more real. Obviously not too grainy that it detracts from the movie (that's not this) but enough that it looks like film

I was 11 years old in the summer of 1977 when Star Wars premiered. I saw it with my family at The Lyric Theater in Ludington Michigan. I don't think there has ever been another film that has had the kind of audience impact that Star Wars did in 1977. My family (and all of my friends) probably saw the film a dozen times during that summer since the Lyric was a grand old single screen theater. Star Wars played for weeks in Ludington until finally being replaced by Smokey and the Bandit. Han shot first....always.

Someone posted something on Instagram showing his son the original VHS cut and they got to the part where the star destroyer flies over tattooine and the dad goes "this looks so awful compared to how I remember" and the kid goes "maybe there's something wrong with the tape" and he goes "nah this is how it looked bud" So I had to come here and watch it myself again for the first time since I was a little kid in the early 2000s. They're wrong. This looks BETTER! George Lucas put real crafted miniatures in front of blue screen for the ships, and they benefit from it. They don't look off like most CGI does. They look solid, like you could touch them... because you COULD touch them. And that adds so much more to the immersion than CGI does imo.

It's an intended joke, a sight gag that used to get a big laugh in theaters. It's a break from seeing the slaughter of all the soldiers and shows us that these aren't "normal" droids. They're on a mission from God- er, I mean, TheForce
@augustragone1159
@augustragone1159 7 месяцев назад
It was intentional comedy relief to break the tension and violence of the Imperial boarding and ensuing slaughter. Audiences reacted perfectly to this relief with huge laughter and thunderous applause, endearing the droids to them instantly. When Vader steps through the doorway into the Blockade Runner, the audience hissed - recalling audience reaction to villains in previous decades, which audience members young and old in 1977 were well aware of as a trope. STAR WARS was magic, because it had invoked audiences into old-fashioned interplay with the characters and action on-screen. It was a special moment in time.

But I have always had a soft spot for the 2006 Limited Edition DVD Release of it, because, while the transfer comes from a Laserdisc, I still like the grain from the Laserdisc and the poor quality, it (to me) makes a fun watch for each of those films, for those versions, it actually makes me feel like I was at the movies watching those movies.

The opening crawl is quite interesting. These days it can be done digitally fairly simply in After Effects and other software but even with digital crawls, the same decisions are having to be made that were made back then, namely in the positioning of words and letters. If you look at the crawl, the spacing between words isn't uniform throughout and even individual words have different spacing. With digital crawls, you can highlight paragraphs, lines or words and alter their spacing to make those changes but the original crawl was done for real, with ILM having to manually position each individual letter to create paragraphs that looked densely packed without being too bunched up or having large gaps.That's a lot of tedious work that needed to be done even before the camera was rolling to record it. There were also multiple versions of the crawl and the early versions were far bigger. That's a lot of work. It's also interesting to note that as soon as the last line appears, the crawl suddenly speeds up. By the time of the prequels, when John Knoll was doing it digitally, he could have that speed up happen more gradually so it felt like the crawl was moving at a more uniform pace into the distance.

I'm 56 I saw it when I was 11. I was trying to explain to my grandchildren exactly why Star Wars changed everything. I explained that before that every science fiction film was joyless and dystopian. the future was where we'd be cannibals or controlled by something or other. it was bleak and no fun. Then Star Wars came out and suddenly there was a great adventure in a galaxy far far away set a long time ago like a fairy tale. Luke Skywalker was so identifiable as the child we all were because he was young, exploring life from a place where he wasn't a hero to begin with, but became a great hero. Luke was me as a child, so full of hope. Then to see the giant ship chasing the blockade runner, utterly wow in the first minute. it was masterful. then of course there were the Star Wars toys.no other film had ever done the range that Star Wars did, i begged my mother to buy me a breakfast serial because it had a stormtrooper you could cut out from the cardboard container. so how does Disney today get that back? I have no idea. I just know that its flashy, its kind of lame . its kind of insulting to the original fans for lots of reasons. Maybe they cant get it back because todays kids are saturated with the fun adventure sci fi that star wars started. But at least done insult the original film with woke.

It might have only shown on Fridays and Saturdays, and maybe an afternoon matinee, or late night or even as a midnight show, and certainly in one of the smaller theaters, but still, in a FIRST-RUN theater? And more than a YEAR after its premiere? Has ANY film released since then done this?

Awesome job. When I watch R2 and threepio cross the corridor I can't help but remember that even as a very young child I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. There's no way they'd have done that. But still, didn't stop me loving the film then and now.

In a rough cut following their corridor cross there was a shot of Threepio, tangled in wires, saying “Help, I’m melting! This is all your fault!” We all know that shot because it was moved to later in the film (on the Falcon) after the TIE fighter battle. Should’ve stayed where it originally was.

Since the original film was titled "Star Wars" with no Episode IV A New Hope, I'd love to change the opening of Empire and Jedi - just using their logo titles with no Star Wars title or Episode numbers.

I saw it in the theatre in 1977 as well as the next two. They should restore the movies from the original 70mm prints (if still in existence) and release it on 4k. They could have a disc with the original version and one with the updated version. I like some of the new scenes, so good to have both versions.

Looks amazing, I could never figure out why the storm troopers or in fact anyone wore armour as its useless against any type of attack, even the helmets can't defend from a stick or a rock.

It actually doe protect them, it’s made by a plastic that disperses the energy throughout the whole armor. So it just knocks them out but saves then from death.

The original STAR WARS is a masterpiece that ranks second only to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.

Excellent! I have one of the first VHS tapes, but it is still after "Episode IV A New Hope" was added, and I also have the first edition laserdisc before the addition, but no laserdisc player. 😞 I'm bookmarking your site as a reminder to make a donation after my bank account recovers from Christmas.

Awesome. Exactly what I saw back in early summer 1977. Star Wars... not a new hope. I have the dvd before the film's bad facelift with dumb new name and much prefer the original version. So if you're restoring it again I will gladly watch any time over the 1997 changes. Let's have wolfman back in the cantina!

Looks pretty good. Still needs a serious round of "dust busting" though. There's a lot of visible specs, both from the negative and the print (and who knows how many generations of internegs and interpositives were in-between the negative cut and this print). What restoration and color timing software are you guys using?

It's not the original as it appeared in theaters...it is polluted and disgraced with the same disgusting "Special Edition" insults, just not as many or as obvious. I saw the original in theaters when it debuted and I know what the original is, and that isn't it.

@@TheGamerZapocalypse The theatrical editions of Empire Strikes Back and Jedi are indeed on the bonus DVD discs that came with the 2006 sets. I can say that with confidence since I'm in my 50s and I saw the originals numerous times in the cinema, then on VHS, Laser Disc, and then on the bonus DVDs in the 2006 sets.

The ones on the bonus disks are copies of the laser disc versions. There is motion smearing and it is letterbox rather than wide-screen so loses a lot of detail.

Thank you for NOT adding "Episode 4 A New Hope" to the original crawler. It seems like these Stormtroopers are the only ones that could hit their target. But, I have always wondered how C-3PO and R2-D2 managed to cross the corridor (5:00) without getting hit from all the blasters.

Honestly, if I could own the Star Wars franchise or rather just "A New Hope", I'd rather keep the original theatrical versions. After i bought the limited edition 2006 DVD of A New Hope. I fell in love with it. It just makes the Reamaster look...rather...strange.

Looks great, guys! Disney should just make this an official release! The highlights are washed out, but this is to be expected from a 3rd or 4th-generation theatrical release print. A first-generation IP, or better yet, cobbling together the unaltered sections of original negative with unaltered shots from a first-generation IP would be ideal. One can only dream...
