Some shots of the Walking Bike at the Theo Jansen Strandbeest Exhibit at the San Francisco Exploratorium. We originally created this walking bike in 2015. Many makers have copied it since, in many countries around the world.
We first came up with the idea because J.P. wanted to 3d model something to 3D print. The Jansen's Strandbeests were great inspiration. J.P. made the model in Sketchup and had it 3d printed. This was then shown to two friends, Blaine and Roy, and we decided to fabricate the real thing.
We cut over 100 feet of 1/2" steel tubing to make the legs, and welded it all together. The leg mechanism from Theo Jansen worked perfectly. We decided to use only 4 legs so that the bike would not be too big, and to reduce our workload, but it would have been better if it was 6 legs. This 4 legged design does not maintains constant foot contact to the ground.
The feet are very unique and no copycats have been able to reproduce them yet. The have a rubber sole and pivot like human ankles on the ground giving the walking bike a strong footing.
The San Francisco Museum called the Exploratorium found our bike online, and were having a Theo Jansen Strandbeest exhibit, and invited us to exhibit as well. It was a great experience to see everyone enjoy the walking bike, and ride it around.
