Adam pronounces "Strandbeest" as you would say it in Dutch at the start of the video while Jansen himself does it in the english way :P

That should lowkey be the norm for all people tho. I find really "rude" to misspronounce names of people you want to interwiev or make content about, which sadly happens a lot. Like i get it, names from certain countries are hard to pronounce but, when someone makes a documentary about someone, at least learn to pronounce their name right.

In the Netherlands, where they are built, the beaches are windier, so the strandbeasts walk better there.
@theothertonydutch
@theothertonydutch 5 лет назад
They evolved there. If you take most animals out of their natural enviroment they'll have a rough time adapting. But in time they might.

@animationspace8550
@animationspace8550 3 года назад
@@theothertonydutch They didn't evolve at all, not to ruin the fun. The people just built new ones as the beests live there forever as immortals. However, if they were able to some how create more of themselves without external help (probably by eating each other and constructing themselves over time) then they can be considered alive, and the probability of mistake goes up (this is a good thing). Mistake is good because this leads to natural selection taking affect on the new changes. This will *finally* lead to evolution! :D

I think part of the reason these are so beautiful and awe inspiring to watch, is they have no obvious rotating parts that are typical of self propelled vehicles. Even the smaller wind powered kits have a fan which spins round and powers the whole thing, but this just has sails and a ton of legs. It gives it a very organic appearance, not like any other machine.

@sarowie
@sarowie 8 лет назад
There are model building kits (one of the kits strictly following Mister Jansens design pretty accurate, one using the linkage for a two legged"machine") from japan and he already build those. You can find both videos on RU-vid/Tested. So I hope he will build one from scratch :-) Even using plywood would be fine, as some strandbeest from Mister Jansen where in fact made of wood. (3D Printing would also be possible, but a bit boring)

I had to write a paper for my animation art degree and my paper talks about art being an extension of human evolution as they are memes according to Richard Dawkin's meme theory in the Selfish Gene, and in it I had included research on Theo Jansen and his Strandbeests. I argued that fictional characters are basically mental entities that live and reproduce through human minds as memes that can even evolve into new characters, they also out live their creators. Strandbeests take it to the next step by actually being alive in the physical world. But both the teachers who are grading my paper turned out to be religious and do not subscribe to evolution, so I received a low grade.

@InaudibleWhisper
@InaudibleWhisper 8 лет назад
That sounds like an absolutely awful environment for learning. Limiting imagination and fresh ideas because they don't align with the teachers is the opposite of what a good teacher should be. Especially for an art degree; art should be free to express whatever the hell the artist wants. Is there nobody higher up you can discuss it with, or are they all zealots?

I had the honor of listening to Theo Jansen during a Maker Faire over here in the Netherlands last year where he showed one of his Strandbeests, and described to us the design process, mathematics and the extraordinary inventions builtin to the "animals". Especially the "pvc logic" actuators he designed are amazing. Look up the videos where it shows the Strandbeests walking into the surf, and reversing because it senses when it enters the water. Genuinely excited to see Adam so passionate about the Strandbeests. Well done Tested.
