Origins of Parkour - Episode 3: The lemurs

This work is something I wanted to do for a long time. I was thinking of how much some species of animals were involved in the conception of the whole set of basic parkour techniques. In fact, the first generation's traceurs claimed themselves to be influenced by animals and said in interviews they used to watch documentaries about monkeys and felines to get inspired.
Anyway, they didn not explain in details how animals had inspired them, and the way they used what they saw in their trainings then. But we could possibly think some techniques were directly copied from the animals, which is quite interesting.
We know David Belle and his father are the ones that conceptualised parkour, but it could be interesting to think about what inspired them to do so. Of course, we also know Georges Hébert and his "natural method" was a huge source of inspiration for them. But animals, due to their conditions of living (eat or being eaten: hunt animals in order to have anything to eat; escape from its predators to survive), have always had to move this way, and developped the most powerful, precise, fast, controled and fluent moves, with only one thing in mind: efficience. Efficience being actually what their subsistence depends on. But they not only move perfectly efficiently, but also develop their training methods (little cats and monkeys learn by playing) to improve their techniques. So we have quite a lot of reasons to be interested in watching and studying them. We could, by watching them, find new techniques, improve the ones we already use, and even improve our training methods. Animals don't practice parkour which is a human concept but survival. But their daily survival challenge makes them become pionners in efficient displacement, which is maybe the greatest opportunity we ever had to learn about it.
Open your eyes and turn on your brain: animals have a lot of things to teach us.

must say even tho these vids were a while back thank you so much for providing this series. a lot of these animals (as well as their forest homes) are very likely not around by now but theyve proved invaluable reference for those who study them, their locomotion, as well as animators and parkour enthusiasts.

Maravilloso Amigo... La mayor inspiracion para el hombre a de ser la naturaleza, mas aun en el parkour. Es asi como podriamos decir que al hombre para ser perfecto solo le faltaria una cola... Un abrazo Fraternal Amigo"!

To follow up my other comment: For example. Watch how the lemurs choose to make contact first with their feet when jumping to a vertical surface. Many people often make the mistake of jumping with their hands outstretched first, resulting in banging their knees on a wall or hurting their ankles. Also by aiming for it with your feet, it's easier to bail out if you notice that you aren't going to make it. In this video we see the proper technique as executed by the Lemurs. Lessons are everywhere.

Ok the climbing wall thingy. Obviously they choose that path instead of the ground path becuase it would be harder for other animals to hunt them down plus that they would get to their destination faster than having to get down from the hill. Parkour is about getting from point A to point B as fast as possible. These clips shows that the lemurs are doing pretty god damn good parkour

Well you took his idea out of context. I believe the way he put it, we're supposed to take the aspect of the human/ animal body as a given. So he was spot on, but now you're adding the context of a vehicle which is different. I should also add that it's not only about speed, but efficiency as well.

They're adapted for jumping and climbing trees easily, not walking. Without the forest, they'll disappear.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the idea of parkour is literally getting from one point to another in the fastest time possible. Which is what the lemurs are doing. Rather than climbing to the ground and walking they choose to jump through the trees. Parkour.

"Origins" of parkour ya dingus. The idea is that the movements performed by these creatures have served as an inspiration for the movement of man. We as humans can look at the abilities which these animals possess, and aspire to develop such skill for ourselves. We can learn a thing or two just from watching this.

I know. I agree. But you're missing the point of the video. The title does not say that this is parkour. The video says that parkour is inspired by these animals. Lemurs are part of the origin of parkour. That's all it's saying.

ive seen the video, like i said i do parkour myself, im not criticizing parkour...im just saying that some lemurs jumping around doing what they would normally do is NOT parkour. Parkour is something that was developed, its a sport...if you see a elephant kick a watermelon does that mean that that would be the origin of soccer? no, all im saying is that lemurs were not the inspiration to parkour, just because they have similar movements doesnt mean anything.
@Brasilgamin
@Brasilgamin 5 лет назад
Parkour ain't a sport man. And it's not said that animals do parkour.... it's said that parkour was based on their movements too. We used to have lots of these natural movements, but we have lost it. Thus we have lost our surviving skill/capabilities. Natural trainings like Herbert and Amoros try to bring this back to man. Not simply as a physical educational, but as a natural human necessity. Parkour was developed from here.
@DTB3378
@DTB3378 12 лет назад
its a sport, for humans...an animal jumping around isnt parkour, its just an animal acting normal.

just lemurs jumping around, they arent doing parkour

Your not understanding...this isnt parkour, its just the behavior of animals due to evolution and what not. Lemurs jumping around isnt parkour.
