The "black riot stab" is actually something called the "train lead", it's a sample of a train horn and it originally came from the disk set that came with the Emulator II.

What's really wonderful about this video is how much more information we have in 2020 (and beyond) about classic tracks and classic samples. I appreciate the effort put in by Luke, although off the mark there's some fun cross-sampling here. But the root of many of these, Stravinksy and Fairlight, etc, which in turn were recorded and resampled and digitised into soundbanks... that's the beautiful complexity of our electronic music culture. So again, while not accurate, it's a wonderful reference and creative reflection all the same. Thanks for putting this together, some great memories (and some PTSD from waiting what felt like HOURS back then for midi sysex sample transfer when the floppy disk failed!).

that's good on modern technology but go back to the days of amiga and atari when you had to spend hours chopping ripping and sampling... look up octomed..and like others have said the sounds came from sound libraries some where free with some magazines and mostly programed into old skool synths like Roland w30 for example. good bit of kit there but doesn't explain fully the true roots of those sounds..

good work, top old skool sample geekery :) I have another one for you, the "Rhythm Section" stab... bear with me... the source is Silver Bullet - Undercover Anarchist (Push to the Limit mix) Silver Bullet- Undercover Anarchist (Push To The Limit Mix) the stab is a short section of around 18 seconds in on the video. Check out Shoot the Moon - Technophobia - Shoot The Moon - Technophobia (Tuff Mix) which not only samples the stab from the Silver Bullet tune but the break as well. Rhythm Section probably sampled Shoot the Moon for their 'Comin on Strong' tune and then it became a fairly well used rave stab...

Hey guys there's nothing in the description mentioning synths. This video's is obviously aimed at fans of Rave music. Fans of rave music would generally understand that alot of that type of music was constructed from reappropriation and sampling existing records rather than 'raw' synth programming, so as such, to people interested in the production techniques of guys that made rave tracks, the description is pretty spot on in my opinion. A rave producer at the time wouldn't have necessarily cared less which synths were originally recorded only which recording was sampled.
@MartinKatscan
@MartinKatscan 7 лет назад
Or to put it another way... if you clicked on a video titled 'Origin Of The Amen Break', would you expect a rundown on the brand and micing techniques of the drum kit played in the original recording session? Or would you expect to be shown which record it appeared on and was sampled from? :)

How's knowing the particular controller going to help you find the origins of the stab? He's showing you what song the sound is sampled from, which part of the song specifically and how to play it. Closer to the origin than that is hard to get without video of the actual artist in the studio while they're taking the actual sample... and good luck finding that for relatively low-budget music from almost 30 years ago.
@jumpjumppumpandkick4523
@jumpjumppumpandkick4523 7 лет назад
***** A synth and a controller are different things. The artists didn't sample anything they actually made the sounds on synths. What you are saying is the artists sampled themselves. I don't need to point out that that makes no sense.

Y'all notice that each group of songs is two different songs, right? The implication being that the second song is the ravey song which likely sampled the first song. The first songs aren't too ravey or stabby, but pieces of them were potentially used as sound sources for early rave stabs. Cmon now.

That's not the origin of the classic orchestral stab used so often in classic rave and hip hop tracks. It's actually a sample taken from the Fairlight CMI. Which was maybe the first sampler ever created. However, that sampler took it from a recording of Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.
