In this video I do a burn test on the Origo 1500 Non-Pressurized 1-Burner Alcohol Stove that one of my viewers sent me to play with.
I mentioned in the video that this stove is NOT a gram-weenie item. If you wanted to use it on a hiking trip you'ld need some pack goats like the ones steinwaygoat travels with. Here's a link to steinwaygoat's video, "Deep Lake, Snowy Range, Pack Goats"
• Deep Lake, Snowy Range...
Please tell her I sent you. Drives people crazy when they ask, "Hiram Who?" 8-)
Thank you for watching my videos,
Hiram

I believe this stove retailed for around $330 and was/is so popular within the boating world that is costs nearly as much used. As of December 2019 I can find no retailer that has any new stock though many list them in their catalog to this day. Some parts are still available and the thing to watch for when buying is to insure the diffuser plate (as shown in the middle of the flame) is included with the stove or you will need to spend and additional 40-60 bucks to obtain one. Thanks to Hiram for showing this stove so folks can decide if its the model they need for boon-docking, car camping or whatever...it is a great stove due to its large fuel capacity, dial to the desire heat feature and overall build quality.

Hiram, those are great little stoves. They are mostly used by boaters because the alcohol is lighter than air and leaves the boat while propane is heavier than air. Propane can collect in your bilge and cause an explosion from a spark like the bilge pump stating up. They come in a one burner like yours a two burner and a two burner with an oven. All can be gimbaled so the stove stays level while the boat is heeled over. also the alcohol can be put out by water. Try that with propane. Anyway, have a great Christmas and hope to see more of you in the New Year.

Alcohol does have the advantage of being dousable with water. Hiram, thanks for the review.

I have a Gloy's Origo Cook Pal stove, similar to this, but older. It doesn't have that spreader, but I'm sure I could fabricate something to fit that role... great vids, BTW! Semper Fi!

Could be a cabin stove. I admit it's not a gram-weenie stove. 8-) The stove is only on loan.

Boat stove. I had a 24ft cabin cruiser that came with one. Mine was double burner for some reason. I switched to a butane stove, much lighter, and easier/safer to store the fuel...on a boat anyhow.

Butane is a VERY dangerous fuel for a boat. First, butane fumes are heavier than air, so any leaks can result in a buildup of explosive fumes in the bilge of the boat. Second, butane canisters are thin-walled and can be punctured and/or rust through relatively easily (producing leaks ---> see above). Non-pressurized alcohol stoves are about as safe as you can get.

@jcb0249 hahaha, alcohol is meant to be the cooking fuel as it is much SAFER on boats.

Hey Hiram, this is a really cool stove. It seems like it would be well suited to a camper or a tiny house. I was thinking that we haven't seen a cooking video from you in a while, so maybe you could do one with this stove if you think it's worth the effort. Let's see how it fries spam!

Hiram, this is a stove designed for a small sailboat galley.

For edification, alcohol stoves of this type are typically used on sailboats 40ft length or less.

This makes sense. I was thinking very expensive when you can get a Coleman gas stove for around 100. I'm not a sailor but I'm guessing alcohol is a safer fuel on a boat than white gas.

MUCH safer. BTW, "Cookmate" stoves are essentially clones of Origos (although they are apparently of slightly lower quality) for about half to two-thirds of the price .

The mesh in the middle of the fuel can is charcoaled on my origo, is there a way to replace them?

For various reasons alcohol isn't an ideal cooking fuel. These burners are really meant for marine/RV use than backpacking as drawbacks of alcohol or offset by it's safety in confined spaces.

Hi there! We have an Origo boat stove that's meant to burn denatured alcohol. It has two burners and a stove. Sometimes when we're cooking our eyes start to sting (not onions) and tends to be correlated with how hot it's burning. Any idea what this might be? Thanks! Joseph
@stevehascall4441
@stevehascall4441 7 лет назад
Make sure you use it in a fairly well ventilated area. My guess is the denaturing chemicals are what's causing your eyes to burn, if not the alcohol itself.

Depends if it's clean, clear methanol like you can get in some countries, or that horrible purple colored stuff like in the UK. That colored stuff is toxic when burned,.

I assume it is 'safer' to burn alcohol ( inside a closed space ) rather than liquid propane ?
@BK-vv8oc
@BK-vv8oc 6 лет назад
Waaaay safer when you use denatured alcohol as intended of course - apart from the fact that you can't see the flame in daylight (fixed with common sense). It's not a pressurised liquid gas so no risk of exploding, the alcohol is much lighter than propane. When used properly it burns clean, quiet and emits only CO2 and water - so as long as you open a few windows you can use them in small spaces :)

I wonder if you can do a test to see how long a full tank of fuel lasts.

Four and a half hour
@team3383
@team3383 3 года назад
@@neogeo1670 Was just going to say. 5 hours. I suppose it depends on the quality and amount in the initial bottle ? 4.5 hrs for 1 litre bottle - it says you can pour 1.2 litres in the tank so I suppose thats where I get the extra 30 minutes.
