Orlando to go (Woolf in 11 minutes)

Sommer's World Literature to go

Talking about the protagonist of this fictional biography, one had best use the gender neutral personal pronoun ‚they‘, for Orlando starts out as a he and later becomes a she and has other remarkable qualities as well, viz. they live for more than three hundred years. ORLANDO is a declaration of love to England, to literature and, above all, to Vita Sackville-West, Virginia Woolf’s lover, who inspired the main character. Michael Sommer and his Playmobil cast offer a compact and entertaining summary of the novel. DISCLAIMER: WATCHING THIS VIDEO DOES NOT REPLACE READING THE ORIGINAL! My recommendation: Read it yourself!

it's rather picaresque and absurd yet there is definitely commentary on literature, gender, and history ... it's not a simple work

Megalicious It was written by a mentally ill woman who had been institutionalized several times, needed in-home care at other times, attempted suicide at least twice, and then succeeded in killing herself at age 59. She had been sexually abused by two half-siblings for several years. She lived a very sad and confusing life, so it is no wonder that her writing is confusing.

Brilliant analysis! One of my favourites, not only from Woolf, but in modern literature generally. Thanks ... it was a scream!

If you find Woolf a bit heavy, this is definitely the book to go for - witty, fun, optimistic, none of the usual Woolfian mental illness, cancer and suicide.
