All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society’s next program at 7:45pm Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at the main Saratoga Fire Station or join us on GoTo Meeting (see instructions below).
Steve Morris spoke to South Bay Soaring Society 4 years ago and has been making progress with his ornithopters (flying planes that use flapping for propulsion) since then. We are excited to hear about this progress, especially his achievement of getting his ornithopter to soar in thermals.
Ornithopters have been flying for over 100 years but few designs have achieved high efficiency in both flapping and gliding flight. Steve’s talk will cover the development of a series of ornithopters that have demonstrated flapping and soaring flight using wing designs different from most previous ornithopters. The models use electric propulsion and the largest weighs 6 pounds, has a 7.5 foot wingspan, and has a glide ratio of greater than 10 to 1. This model has soared in moderate thermals.
The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 (except December and January). The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.
You may also join our 7:45pm program from your computer, tablet or smartphone at

I am so fresh in this kind of air plan and before this video ı was thinking of springs under the wings. I am gloud from my self 😁 thank you this video. 🙏

I have a black bionic rc bird. Once while flyin at dusk i had a owl attack it, it even did that spin turnin upside down, claws out a few times, it was pretty cool

would have been nice to see how you had the servos hook up to the wings cheers

Has anyone measured the power that birds use for flying ?

gr8 video, so what is better. Gearbox or servos? Do you need servos type to be able to lock wings into glide? with the servos, you can set fail safe, so if you loose power it will lock servos where you want. cheers.

are there any plans of any kind. I would love to try to build one.

I wonder if a wing modeled off a bat would be easier to reproduce

Watchin ur vid again... at bout 33:27 u talk bout the wings needing to b fast on the downstroke n slow on the up. Have u ever payed attention 2 a bird in flight. Even in the clip u show of geese flyin, its the opposite of that. It is slower on the down n faster on the up stroke in nature

Yes, this was something I only noticed recently by looking at a lot of barn owl flight videos. For the barn owl the down stroke seems to take between 1.5 and 1.9 times the upstroke time.
