All are invited to South Bay Soaring Society’s next program at 7:45pm Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at the main Saratoga Fire Station or join us on GoTo Meeting (see instructions below).
Steve Morris spoke to South Bay Soaring Society 4 years ago and has been making progress with his ornithopters (flying planes that use flapping for propulsion) since then. We are excited to hear about this progress, especially his achievement of getting his ornithopter to soar in thermals.
Ornithopters have been flying for over 100 years but few designs have achieved high efficiency in both flapping and gliding flight. Steve’s talk will cover the development of a series of ornithopters that have demonstrated flapping and soaring flight using wing designs different from most previous ornithopters. The models use electric propulsion and the largest weighs 6 pounds, has a 7.5 foot wingspan, and has a glide ratio of greater than 10 to 1. This model has soared in moderate thermals.
The South Bay Soaring Society Program is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the main Saratoga Fire Station at 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA 95070 (except December and January). The business meeting starts at 6:30pm and the program begins sometime after 7:45pm. Anyone is welcome to attend either meeting and you can bring friends.
