Thanks for the great follow-up, Juan. I've been following your reports on Oroville since it first happened and I have to say I've come to a much greater understanding and empathy for the folks in that area just by knowing the facts of their situation due to your excellent work. My job has me talking to people in California all day long, many of whom have had to relocate because of the Camp fire. Their stories are heartbreaking at times, so I'm glad to be able to help them with what I do, if only just to listen to them tell their story again. Thanks again, and Happy New Year!

I really like that old Bell 47, used to do site prep burns with one. They built a pump for napalm to we could drip napalm to really get the heat up in the fire so we could finish quick and go on to the next tract. Fun days but it was hard work. Thanks again Jaun for keeping us updated.

It might be nice in the spring or fall, but in the summer people would ROAST! That spillway faces west and the setting sun would turn anyone sitting on those concrete steps into raisins in an hour! People in the bay area don't really appreciate how damn hot it gets on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The elevation there puts it right in the temperature inversion zone, too. That means that on hot days, after it cools off when the sun sets in the valley, those western slopes are still over 100 degrees because, well, heat rises. My Mom lives just above Lake Oroville (she can see the lake from her rear deck) so I know how horrifically hot it gets there. I can see why someone unfamiliar with Lake Oroville might think it would be a great place for a concert, however. But there are better places for outdoor concerts than the western face of Oroville Dam's emergency spillway! Trust me, I'm a local. I know.

That's as far down as they are going to place the concrete for the emergency spillway? Seems like they are cutting corners again. If they cut corners on these reservoirs, they should not have them.

Happy new year to the Browne family! Thank you again, Mr. Browne, for another fact-filled report on the goings on at the Oroville Dam. As a local, I'm really glad they decided to keep the "spillway boat ramp." I've had some amazingly good times on the lake embarking from there. It was a treat to see little Chewy, too, although I do wish he had a Gridley-centric name since that's where he came from. But it's WAY too late for that now. I just have to be content to know that he came from my block. I'm really happy that he's worked out for your family and that he's got such an amazing fur-ever home. He's a lucky little dog to have found such a nice family. ;-) And yes, I am dog crazy.

I must say I agree with so many of your other subscriber friends, so.. ditto what they ^^ say! 😊 I think I’ve said before, you probably showed up in my feed because I’m an armchair avgeek. I enjoy your taking us along in the mighty Luscombe and the incredible recordings and stills. I had no idea Northern California was so ruggedly beautiful. And what engineering marvels the concrete dam and spillways are! As a person of abiding Christian faith, you can be sure I’m praying for the families who’ve lost loved ones and/or their homes and businesses. Now, I’m including prayer for descending mountain snow lines and rains for your much-needed water; as well as natural and man-assisted rehabbing the forest floor/understory. And yes, I’m prepared to pray for years. “See you here!”

I'm a retired Chartered Civil Engineer in the UK. I worked in the coastal and the fluvial flood risk management field for 40 years. I followed your Oroville videos from the beginning. They were very good, thanks. I think you deserved the award you got for them from the professional organisation who gave it to you. I thought you might like an 'Adapting to sea level rise' video project that will keep you going for decades to come. I expect you are aware that climate change is causing the sea level to rise. Sea level rise will increase the flood risk to thousands of coastal settlements and to the millions of people who live and work there. In addition to these direct damages an increase in coastal flooding damages the economy and social wellbeing. Below is a link to a recent article I just read which made me think you might be interested covering covering sea level rise, its potential impact on coastal communities and how there are adapting to it or are planning to adapt to it. I was thinking you could do this for the coastal settlements near you and for the places you visit on your world wide travels. www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-california-coast-storm-damage-20190313-story.html Best wishes Tony Burch

Then was in the CCC's Jan 86 at Himboldt Fire Center up out of Weotte on the Eel Rive. Caught the Mighty Flood of Feb 86 as a New Bee in the Corps. there. What a time on the 201 Salmon Restoration project for those fish in streams. CDF Fire Captains Sandy Natt, Mike Parker. I love flying with you! Although it's only on a video, I feel as if I'm really sitting in the plane! I now have a much better understanding of the Oroville Dam Spillway & surrounding areas. I recently moved to Redding & don't get out much. The local televised News never shows the entire area or explains much to the viewer. Maybe you could teach them a thing or two?!..Or sell them a good story. Some of us locals would appreciate decent nightly news.
@calichef1962
@calichef1962 5 лет назад
Agreed! It's a shame but the local TV news channels don't ever do any investigative reporting anymore. All they ever do is interview cops, Cal Fire spokespeople and the DAs without ever getting any eye witness interviews. I will give them credit for getting some eye witness interviews with the Camp fire, though. However, much of the eye witness stuff was in the form of RU-vid or Facebook videos, so not really their own work. I've gotten to the point that I only watch the local news when something big has happened.

Thanks for the excellent report, very informative and great photography on that huge project! I wondered how the progress was going on the spillway. Pay no attention to the people who think a little blasting is "the end of the world" since they would scream bloody murder if that area BELOW had flooded! THEN, people would have something to scream about for miles below Oroville Dam! That area has been hit hard, with the Paradise fire and all. Paradise was where I grew up after about age 10 until after school from about 1950 to 1973, when my father passed away and again for about a half a year in 1985 after my mother's passing, to finalize things. We used to go down to Nelson's Bar to swim in the summer; I learned to swim there as a kid. And of course I was back for Christmas until I'd lost both parents and the properties sold. I'm sure our old property is gone from the fire, a big two-story house, barn, and out-buildings on about 18 acres as well as my father's medical office down town. I suppose the apple and pear orchard will come back but I doubt the woods will. Those pine trees burn fast. I have no intention of going up there to see the place, since I'd probably get lost now with the landmarks all gone. I worked at Feather River Hospital along with my father but I'm sure I'd no longer recognize much after the fire, and I don't want to see it now, since I've seen quite few pictures and the devastation was terrible. I'm sure the people who matter are and will be grateful for your reports. I saw one aerial video, about 25 minutes long, of the area and I didn't recognize much. It's heart-breaking for such a sad thing to happen to such a beautiful area. Keep up the good work, I'm sure it is appreciated! I became a GA pilot after I left home and flew out of Half Moon Bay Arpt below San Francisco so was used to crosswinds, but I'm in Idaho now, so don't have any reason to go up to that area now. Nice landing, by the way! Thanks for the report.

It's a guessing game when it may fail. It was built badly to start with. A spillway is less of an issue then the dam itself unless water levels get too high. It's like a noisy transmission that you run until it needs a tow. Hindsight is always 20-20.

Excellent report once again Juan. Love the flyovers of the reservoir and surrounding country. Looks like a nice water fall at 11.31. I hope you and the family have a great 2019. Looking forward to the new reports as you make them. regards from the UK

In regards to your snow survey, no worries Juan. Nice storm pattern setting up this coming weekend with low snow levels. Funny how the DWR has scheduled their snow survey a day or two before a forecast of possible heavy snow.

Nice close. If you ever get a chance to hike Phantom Falls on Table Mountain, do it. Lots of history at the bottom behind the falls. Do it in the spring though.

I know it could never happen because of terrorism or whatever, but the new emergency spillway would make such a cool amphitheatre! 🎶
