In this video I share my thoughts on Orpen rest camp in the Kruger National Park, as well as its two sister camps, Tamboti tented camp and Maroela campsite. I also tell you what animals you can expect to see in the area and what routes I recommend for game drives around Orpen, Tamboti and Maroela.
Although game viewing around Orpen is fantastic, I do find the area to be a little bit too busy for my liking, with frequent traffic jams forming early in the morning on the H7 tar road. I'm also not a big fan of driving east into the sun first thing in the morning, which is a slight problem from Orpen. The three camps, however - Orpen, Tamboti and Maroela - are lovely to stay at and well worth a visit if you're planning a trip to the Kruger National Park!

Felt incredibly overwhelmed trying to book a safari in South Africa but with the help of your videos, I'm all set for a combo self-drive out of Orpen Rest Camp and a few days at Pungwe in the Manyeleti. Your videos are among the best I've seen on RU-vid in any category -- perfect mix of entertainment, information, and stunning visuals. I've learned so much and now feel ready to take on this adventure. Special shout-out for clear instructions on things like boom gates pre-Orpen, which road signs to follow in the Manyeleti, etc. These bits of local insight are incredibly valuable for someone coming from afar. We recently saw the Birminghams near Orpen on the tar road between the boom gate and the camp. Perfect. The 2 white lions were there as well as the young male with the limp. Great meeting celebrities!

The White Lions are in the Birmingham Pride found on Ngala and sometimes slip into Kruger. The Orpen Pack of Dogs always den far off the Tourist areas of Kingfisherspruit N of Timbavati River in a area close to the no road Red Gorten Windmill in Jul about >> they show their pups again in the Orpen area and Ngala in about Oct

Great video!! I stayed at Maroela 3 years go at the end of a 10 day trip in the park that included a wilderness trail and a stay at Sable Hide!! That trip was the richest in sightings I've ever had in the park, and the H7 was where I saw a wild dog pack and leopard, as well as my final one of the big five, just before returning to camp on the last night... white rhino!! It was truly a tremendous trip, and I would love to do it again!! This year I am doing the northern Kruger. Thanks for your videos. They are inspirational!!

Great review - thanks. I recently visited Orpen and found it (and the main tar road into the park) to be relatively quiet - but I get that its an access road and can be busy. I must have been lucky. Perhaps school holidays impact the traffic on this road too.

The BEST area of Central Kruger >> Orpen Wild Dog Pack < Skybed Lion Pride and Descendants < Close access to N section of S36 for best Cheetah Sightings in Kruger around Rockvale Windmill. Great Section Ranger at Kingfisher Spruit and my favorite Male Leopard at Bobbejaans Krans...Away from the Metropolis of Satara . We used to stay at Tamboti with its camp Leopards >> seen 2 in camp during the day nogal >> well what do you expect with an unguarded open day gate Lol Love that >> hate fences I am a Rooiputs lover> Muzandzene >> Best Picnic Site South of Letaba >> Big Secret Leave camp at gate opening to beat Traffic and sunrise in Aug and go right past lions for the soon to be traffuic jams and go straight to Rockvale for Cheetah on your OWN . Never have traffic as a photographer Key. we now stay at Maroela if we are not at our favorite North

Booked orpen for a night in August, as the rest camp is a few miles further in on the H7 and has only a few visitors, do you not have an advantage when the gate opens at 6 am ?

Rich, the Orpen-area is better in my opinion, but like I said in the video, there will be A LOT more traffic than down at Talamati.

Hi Villiers. We have stayed at Tamboti multiple times and loved it. But during our last trip, we decided to not go again till our children are a bit older. The honey badgers are just too dangerous. Do you know if Maroela also has the same problem with the badgers? Thanks

@@ridhwaanmohammed8717 Hi Ridwhaan. They are now 7 and 8. We were there in March this year. They were all over. We had a close call at the Braai, where I had to grab the meat from the buggers just before they stole it. Told my kids they had to stay in the tent/on the stoep.
