Shingwedzi rest camp lies in the far north of the Kruger National Park and, unlike all the other Kruger camps north of the Olifants River, it actually offers some exceptional game viewing opportunities!
In this video, I not only show you exactly what Shingwedzi rest camp looks like, but I also tell you what you can expect to see on game drives around it. It really is the most comprehensive rest camp and game viewing review about Shingwedzi in the Kruger National Park on RU-vid!
SHINGWEDZI REST CAMP - KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Shingwedzi is an unpretentious, medium-sized camp that lies about three quarters of the way up in the Kruger National Park. And despite the fact that it's located in the heart of mopane veld, which is often very poor for game viewing, the diverse vegetation along the large riverbeds in this area, actually attract plenty of animals, making Shingwedzi the best camp for game viewing in the northern half of the Kruger National Park.
Shingwedzi rest camp itself has a small shop, a restaurant, a filling station and a lovely swimming pool. Cellphone reception can be very poor and, as a result, credit card payments don't always go through, so always bring extra cash with, preferably in small notes.
Accommodation options include a variety of huts, bungalows and chalets that sleep between 2 and 4 people, and Shingwedzi also has a campsite with 50 stands with power and 'braai' facilities. The nicest stands are along the fence on the north-west of the camp boundary. Although Shingwedzi overlooks a large riverbed, the view is not nearly as good as at other camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Letaba or Olifants.
Game viewing, however, is excellent around Shingwedzi! A lot can be seen on the large network of small loops right around camp. Look out for wild dogs and leopards early morning and late afternoon as you leave and drive back to camp, and make sure to spend some time on the bridge that crossed the Shingwedzi River - you're allowed to get out there and stand a great chance of spotting elephants and buffalo in the sand below.
By far the most scenic and productive road to drive from Shingwedzi is the S56 Mphongolo Loop north-west of camp. It's at its most beautiful and atmospheric early in the mornings, but late afternoon, when it's very hot, the riverbed along which you drive, attracts more animals.
Don't forget to stop at Lamont Waterhole en route to the S56 early in the afternoon to watch elephants reaching into the cement dam with their trunks to suck up water.
Another nice road to drive is the S52 Red Rocks Loop south-west of camp. Stretch your legs at the Red Rocks lookout point, which is one of the most scenic views in the Kruger National Park.
Last, but not least, spend some time on the causeway across the river just downstream from camp if there's a bit of flowing water in the Shingwedzi River, because waterbirds, elephants and crocodiles often congregate here.

Love it. I will say the H1-7 up to Babalala is also worth a mention. I have often had my best lion sightings on that stretch, especially first thing in the morning. The Mphongolo Loop after that is much better, once the bush has woken up.

Awesome video! I kept hearing you "Singwedchi", am I losing it hahahah. I was there about 3 weeks ago, setup camp about 4 stands down from the swimming pool. I thought it was a waste to spend the extra to be along the fence. That morning around 3am about 4 - 6 lions pulled down an antelope in front of my tent. Spent the rest of the night hearing Lions and Hyenas fighting, bones crunching, etc... was a great experience. I am still quite sad that they blew up the Kannidood dam though. Hope it will one day be rebuilt. Was always great to sit under a tree there and read a book with a mug of coffee in hand :)

I got a lovely leopard sighting on the S56 two weeks ago thanks to a squirrel alarm-calling. Also good Sharpe's Grysbok sightings. Another bucket-list sighting was a leopard walking right on Red Rocks. Absolute magic. April is a tough time though because that Mopani is so thick.

I really enjoy your videos, they are very well made and with great information. I watch them even though I don’t have plans to going to Kruger in the near future. I am going to Etosha in August, though. I wonder if you’d consider making a video with general self-driving game drive tips. Or maybe safety tips especially around elephants.

Awesome video like always Villiers. Just a quick question. How is the stretch of road from when you exit at Punda Maria to when you link up with the N1 near Polokwane? Reason why I'm asking is that we need to drive back to Pretoria from Shingwedzi and I'm doing research if that is doable in on go to get home

Hey. Just come across your channel whilst researching for my upcoming visit to Kruger in September. I was wondering when you give advice on the best routes to drive in each region/rest camp area, are the roads suitable for regular cars that you would hire from the airport or just for off road vehicle. Also is the north of the park more green in September? We will be arriving from the first and staying for two weeks in the reserve ☺️
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert 2 года назад
Hi 🦋 The roads are all driveable with a sedan 🙂 We’ve had late rains throughout the park this year so most of Kruger is still relatively green at the moment. In fact, it’s the prettiest I’ve seen it in June in years ❤️ Enjoy your trip!
@thebutterfly1356
@thebutterfly1356 2 года назад
@@TheSafariExpert hey. Thanks for the reply 😃 That's lovely to hear. Glad you've had lots of rain. So is the North worth seeing and driving yo? We are coming from the UK and it's our first time in SA. Would love to see it when it's lush and green but cannot come until September. It's exciting to know we will hopefully get to see lots of different species of animals and birds.. It's definitely a bucket list adventure. It's been really helpful seeing your videos on the camps and the roads you have suggestion to drive down. I've written it all down 😂😂
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert 2 года назад
@@thebutterfly1356, what is your current plan/itinerary? I suppose it depends on what you’d like to see most? Is it the Big Five or specific species, birds, scenery?
@thebutterfly1356
@thebutterfly1356 2 года назад
@@TheSafariExpert hey. So we have 12 days. Will start at Berg-en-dal campsite as driving straight from the airport to Kruger. Definitely want to try and see the big five but to be honest just want to see as many different species as possible. I definitely want to see the wild dogs as well. Being near water and seeing hippos is also on the wish list. Would love to see some greenery with a place to stand so you can look down at the surrounding area. I've watched the film Out of Africa to many times 😂 it's my favourite 😂
@TheSafariExpert
@TheSafariExpert 2 года назад
@@thebutterfly1356, Berg-en-Dal is a great place to start and good for wild dogs as well. I recon you can spend the majority of your time in the southern part of the park - it’s incredibly beautiful and game viewing is much better than up north. For the best view, drive north from Lower Sabie on the H10 to Nkumbe view point - it’s INCREDIBLE! Enjoy 🙌🏻

There are definitely lions around Shingwedzi, but yes, certain prides can sometimes be a bit shyer than further south and they are not seen that frequently.
